Not crazy, because we have lots of players we want to keep, and they can't all stay. DEs and WRs on the bubble who I'd rather keep than Rico.

Talking about giving Rico another year as an isolated idea, sure, but who do I have to cut to make that happen?
Yeah, like lots of underachieving DEs/DTs/WRs, but you're worried about carrying 4 TEs? Hello? We've been carrying 4 TEs every year for the past several years. You simply don't like nor want Rico. Too bad. Deal with it.

Obviously I am reading into what he's said, because that's what we're talking about. It's always possible that someone who talks like an entitled jerkoff is in fact the hardest working guy in the world. But that's not how I bet.
I've been for giving his this year as well. He was a project. He's only accrued 2 seasons. If we weren't planning on giving a 6th round pick who didn't play college ball his third year to develop, we shouldn't have taken him.
In the NFL, talk is all Rico has. He's never been more than a bubble roster player. Yet he talks like he deserves so much more. Rico copes with the mismatch between self image and reality with resentment. Perhaps that will spur him to greatness. But I doubt it.

I just don't care much about what players say. You've got all kinds of different personalities that express themselves in different ways. Some of the cockiest players of all-time, like Deion Sanders, were able to back it up, while others haven't been able to. Some people always blame others for their mistakes and some never feel what they've accomplished is enough.

Not necessarily you, but there's a lot of resentment expressed in this thread against Gathers for him stating how he feels. I might not agree with the way he said it or even what he said, but I'm just not going to judge a player by what he posts on social media.

All I'm concerned about is what happens on the field ... unless off-the-field stuff results in a suspension that affects on-field stuff. He's got one more shot to show he belongs in the NFL, at least with Dallas, and with three tight ends ahead of him, it's a long shot. This year, he has to actually force Dallas to keep a fourth tight end IMO because of the depth at other positions.

Witten wasn't looking too good the last time he played in 2017.
Im not sure how many but it seemed like Witten was getting called for a lot of holding before he retired. Witten is warrior and a leader but age and wear and tear eventually take its toll on the body in this game. Its time to get these younger guys in the game.

Bennett did the same thing and we all know he and his brothers story, shame if Rico has fallen in the same path.

To be fair Rico is right. And the cowboys could be one of the most frustrating organizations to be in with the favoritism thing.

I understand that rico believes he didnt get a fair chance basically against nobody's and then the cowboys broung Witten back of all things.

The organization gave more excuses about what they didnt see in camp instead of just giving the man a fair deal on the field to prove himself.

And we seriously wonder why the players start flying off the handle after the cowboys have basically kept them all these years and ruined their careers.

Atleast give the man some goalline chances or something. For all of this he could have been went to another team.

Pathetic

Well, quit with your intentional misrepresentation. We are strictly talking about his 2018 season.

It’s not an intentional misrepresentation. We are talking about Rico in totality. Where on the title of this thread does it say anything about Rico just this past season? The FACT is that he has been in the NFL for 3 years and has done nothing.

But fine, if you want to play that game. Oh wow, 6 catches for 2 touchdowns. WOW OH WOW. Rico is so awesome.

Those are still scrub numbers. Even for one season.

Rico hasn’t done anything thus far. He doesn’t even look impressive when he is on the field.

They railroaded rico from the jump. He played well in 2 preseasons. The 2nd year he should have seen some regular season time had great momentum then they freakin stashed him on IR for the year for Kellen Moore. He is probably still upset about it and I would be too. They have stashed the kid every year because he would of gotten picked of the PS or free agency immediately. The kid can play just as well as darwin or shultz, and his attitude probably does suck toward the organization. I can't blame him

I have my own theories on our TE situation, but I cannot discuss those theories here.

If Rico can't beat out a 37 year old who hasn't played in a year, then maybe he just isn't NFL material.

Here's what gathers really accomplished:

2016 - Getting released, then resigned onto the practice squad.
2017 - Getting a concussion and jaw and neck injuries that left him off the field all season.
2018 - Getting arrested for drug possession.
2019 - Getting suspended for substance abuse.

See the pattern? He can't even stay on the field as a back up.

I know where you're going with that and if I saw any evidence I would agree, but later last season Jarwin and Schultz improved and were just better. Gathers doesn't do himself any favors.

Railroaded him? Come on man. He clearly wasn’t ready to play the first couple of years.

He played well in pre season, late in games, against defenders who aren’t even in the league.

Even so, saying he is “as good as” Jarwin or Schultz isn’t saying anything either. The reality is those two players are also JAGS at best right now. They have also done basically nothing in the league. Neither one deserves to start over Witten.

I agree that Witten shouldn’t be playing 90%+ of the snaps anymore. But the idea that Rico is some stud player who is being held back for reasons other than football? I haven’t seen it.

We should be drafting a real tight end next off-season in the top 3 rounds. Somebody with some real talent. So we aren’t trying to rely on late round projects like Jarwin, Schultz and Rico to be the future of the position.

I don’t like our coaching staff either. But it ain’t because Rico freaking Gathers hasn’t gotten more playing time. The dude is a basketball player. His only special attribute is that he is tall and big and kind of fast in a straight line for his size. The next time I see him do something impressive on a football field, will be the first time.

I also find it hilarious that people think Rico is being mistreated when CLEARLY the coaches and front office have done everything they can to keep Rico on the team for 3 years now. They even gave him a roster spot last off-season, AFTER he was arrested for possession. Why should I believe a front office/coaches that keep him through all of that, DONT want him to succeed? It makes no sense.
