Here's a crazy idea. How bout...like...leaving it the way it is? It ain't broken.

It's broken. There's too much lag time between the SB and the start of MLB. C'mon man. We need an extra month of NFL.

I know the preseason games are what the staff uses to see the young players and see who makes the team. The new players likely wouldn’t be in favor of it unless they are allowed to expand the 53 man roster. We still IMO need a game the starters get a series or 2 in and a game they have a half to play. If they take some preseason out then the first few games of the season will be sloppy. But hey whatever they want to do is fine with me.

Please. You know as well as I do that 4 games is a joke.

Out of curiosity, how many pre season games is enough in your opinion? After all, another 2 games would even further help develop and evaluate the roster, wouldn’t it? Maybe they should just make a summer league with certain stipulations.
Just don't watch them. Problem solved.

The coaches like them.

Great response, no point in making the season more entertaining by eliminating a meaningless 4th pre season game.

IMOF, you’re right, coaches like them and I don’t think 4 games is enough to evaluate fringe players, they should extend the pre season to 6 games.

More gimmicks, stop already. We probably don't need a 16 game season, the 14 game format worked too. But I am also ok with 16. Do we really need more? I can't stress this enough. There is absolutely no good reason to extend the season to 18 games anymore than extending it to 24 games makes sense. 16 games is by far enough to determine who are the top teams in this game.
The argument for 17 is that teams like the Rams and Jaguars wouldn't have to give up home games every year in order to "expand the game internationally".

How about 18 games with 2 bye weeks? I'd claim it's a novel idea, except that the CFL already does it. Best part? No players die as a result!
no way, all ive been reading is how dangerous it is and how they players simply cant deal with an 18 game schedule..... and you are telling me the CFL already does this? wow, I guess players dont explode after 16 games.

I don't get why it's the way it is.
- No contact with players prior to June
- Pre-season from June 1- August 31 (three months)
- 3 x pre-season games
- 18 game regular season
- 1 x mid-season bye per team
- 2-week winter break (Dec 2-15)
- Superbowl pushed back four weeks.

That gives players 12-13 weeks holidays which is more than any other profession I know. I get that these players need to recover but IMO recovery is better off managed by the football team anyway.

I've been pushing a longer season (calendar wise) with the same amount of Regular season games for quite a while. Cut the Pre-season to 2 games or 2 games plus some controlled scrimmages against other teams. That along with expanded rosters & pushing back roster cut dates would allow you to get more development & evaluation than you have now. My schedule is a little more complicated than yours but ends with the Superbowl being end of Feb \ first of March. Would alleviate some of the overlap & burn out fans who follow both CFB & NFL experience plus give players more time to heal during season.

Like any change, people would resist but if it were implemented I think a lot of folks would agree it was better.

If that fails they could make each game 90 minutes.

The NFL season is fine how it is.

If this changing-the-schedule compromise really takes off, I'd favor 3 preseason games and 17 games for the regular season!

I personally think that 16 games is a solid balance of length of season, while also maintaining the importance of every game.

I know the owners are trying to generate even more revenue and make even more money. But there are other ways to do it.

You’re only saying that because you’re used to 16. Once, there was only 12 games and they talked about bringing it up to 14. If that were the situation now, you’d likely say, “12 ideal! They’re not used to playing 14 in college, players won’t last in the NFL.” And if we were already playing 18 and talked about reducing it to 16, “ Why would they do that? Everything is balanced around 18 games, it’d just be that much harder for better teams to separate themselves from the pack in a shorter season.”

It’s just your perspective due to what we have now. They could play 30 games and figure out a way to make it work.

I said it before, there's going to be an 18 game NFL season, 2 preseason games and a couple more playoff teams whether you like it or not, it's coming, it's only a matter of time folks!!!

This sounds a little more radical.......lol

The only problem ( good problem some may say ) could be finding 17 neutral sites.....

Mark Murphy supports 17 games a regular-season compromise

Given the conflicting quotes attributed to Packers CEO Mark Murphy on Friday, I opted to pretend to be an actual reporter and do some actual reporting.

Short story shorter, I got Murphy on the phone to clarify his thoughts on a potentially expanded regular season.

Murphy said that he remains opposed to 18 games, a position he has taken on multiple occasions in the past. He acknowledges, however, that 17 games could work as an obvious compromise between 16 and 18. Murphy supports 17 regular-season games primarily as a way to continue to grow the game internationally, ensuring that every team would have, every year, eight true home games, eight true road games, and one neutral-site game, with most of those 16 neutral-site games played in other countries. However, Murphy was adamant that the preseason would have to drop to three games, and maybe to only two (despite the loss of revenue that would come from reducing the total number of preseason and regular-season games from 20 to 19).

The Packers might not be getting favorable calls from the refs anymore. Goodell to Murphy: Toe the Line or be punished.

No, they don't. Which is one of the several reasons I no longer watch MLB.

I don't see a 17 game season happening. An 18 game season is certainly a possibility, it means more money. Just like they'll eventually add another 4 playoff teams for the same reason. The NHL and NBA doesn't care if average or sub par teams are in the playoffs, why should the NFL? But that crap about the players only playing in 16 games is a joke in the making. I'll just have to hope neither happens.
