News: Rank 'Em - Top 10 Running Backs

Read the criteria before you assume what this is about. I did not and was creating a few cusswords until I went back.

FRISCO, Texas – Now’s the time to talk running back.

It’s been a hot topic around these parts, there’s no question. The Cowboys employ arguably the best running back in the NFL, and there’s no shortage of speculation about him as training camp draws near.

But this isn’t the space to debate Ezekiel Elliott’s contract situation. Today, I’m continuing my look at the Cowboys’ upcoming schedule by analyzing his counterparts at the position. The Cowboys already face a ton of running back talent by virtue of playing in the NFC East – but there’s a lot of other talent on this slate, as well.

Here’s my look at the Top 10 running backs on this season’s schedule.

We play four of the top 6 or 7 RBs in the league this season.

The best one of all twice

But yes, their list is pretty bad

Elliott is clearly the best back.
He leads in holdout, contract, trade and out of the country clicks

Alvin Kamara
Le'Veon Bell
Todd Gurley- think he has a down year due to his knee.
Sony Michel
James White
Jordan Howard
Kerryon Johnson
Dalvon Cook
Adrian Peterson

Hmm, Guice aggravated his hamstring and has an injury history, but if he gets going he could make the list.

NFC East has some tough RB competition this year, possibly the best of any division. Elliott, Barkley, Howard, Peterson, Sanders, Guice.

Lot of talent on that list too. I guess we'll see if we learned from the Rams game, because teams are going to implement some of that in the ground game. Good experience for the playoffs though

LLLOOOLLL

1. Saquon. Is Saquon.
2. Kamara. Is Kamara.
3. Gurley. Is Gurley. This is assuming his knee is about 90%; he's still good, but his chronic injuries may start costing him a step.
4. Aaron Jones. Has consistently been super-efficient in committees in GB. One of those players who is just begging to get more touches and break out.
5. Kenyan Drake. Another committee-back hero who really needs more touches.
6. Sony Michel. Great inside power runner. Not fast or explosive like all the guys above him, but he just pinballs around and picks up yardage.
7. Bell. Took a year off, reportedly out of shape, super-patient style is going to be hard to pull off behind a not-super-patient OL. I'm really bearish.
8. Adrian Peterson. 1,000 yards rushing at 33 was impressive, but Father Time and 2,800 career carries aren't forgiving.
9. Kerryon Johnson. Was lighting it up in Detroit before his injury, looks like a real player. Tough to rank him above so many proven players though.
10. Dalvin Cook. Sort of a poor man's Saquon, he's either going to get 30 yards or do nothing.

I left Tarik Cohen off this list because he's more receiver than runner, and Derrius Guice because he's a total unknown. We've never seen him take an NFL snap, and while he was a stud at LSU, who knows how he'll look after his ACL surgery.

Overall, it's actually a pretty strong list of running backs we're facing this year. LVE and Jaylon have some work to do.

He's about as similar as you can get to Kamara, and actually had better stats.

The RB's don't concern me as I view that Rams game as an aberration, the run D was pretty good all season.

I am more concerned about the pass rush, or lack of, and the QB's and receivers the Cowboys face than the RB's.

And to rank RB's without first considering the overall offense, D and strength of the team is useless. My top 3 are Kamara, Michel and Gurley because of their overall offense and team. Barkley and Peterson don't hit the top 6. No RB is going to dominate the game as a runner unless he's knocking down 3 TD's.

You seriously don't think Saquan Barkley is not a top 6 RB?

I get it with Peterson at this stage in his career. I don't even think he's top 12.
But Barkley?

The best back Dallas could actually be Derrius Guice. He was fantastic at LSU without a quarterback the entire time.
