Its pretty much a given for teams to exercise the 5th year, as long as the player has shown any flashes of talent.

Its no different. You are either a leader or you aren't. You can just tell that Cooper and Dak are a different kind of person and teammate. Zeke is a moron. Its not like Zeke isnt getting paid. Did you know Dak is getting paid like 1 million this year? I don't hear him complaining.

Everyone is different. I don’t understand that thinking. But anyway. Zeke paid for a kids funeral who was shot Cooper and Dak have not so that means he’s better than them? No. Elliott has invited the other running backs to his home to study film this offseason. Doesn’t that show leadership?

The circumstances for Dak and Cooper are entirely different. Their playing positions alone allow both Dak and Coopers raises to be greater than Elliott’s. Their careers will be longer than Elliot’s as well. The damage to their bodies will probably be substantially less than Elliott’s. It’s not the same at all.

BTW Dak is making more than 2 million this year.

I cannot argue that, there were red flags that went ignored but that's done, nothing they can do about that now.

And when he led the league in rushing as a rookie and the team got homefield running the O though him, I didn't notice a lot of posters complaining about him then.

This is the guy that basically sank 2017. This is also the guy that rushed for 47 yards on 20 carries against the Rams. Still haven’t made it out of the divisional round with the great Zeke Elliot. Now this...

I have been consistently negative on him. Great talent. Worse headache.

Yah, your going out in left field here.

Its the way they go about getting what they want that is different for me. Im not debating that Zeke is a more pressing matter for him. I just love the way Dak goes about his business. True leader. Guys like that don't come along often. This is the big factor that the Dak haters don't get.

I just appreciate it over the antics of Zeke.

I wasn't a fan of taking Zeke at #4 but knew how good he was. I loved the kid the first year or two. Even believed him with the GF nonsense. But after all this stuff I don't believe him anymore. Hes a bad apple. If the Cowboys could go back, I don't think they take Zeke.

I don't know the standard operating procedure with using the 5th year option on 1st round draft picks but it seems to be the prudent thing to do would be to talk to the agent and inform them of the intention of the team to exercise that option.

They could have done that but that would make this holdout really stress the relationship and maybe if they'd discussed this and known their intention, they might not have that option, which amounts to a one year contract, effectively allowing them to tag him twice and have three one year contracts in a row and he is guaranteed only that one current year. Including this year, Elliott would make about 36M over the next 4 years, if tagged and not injured.

Gurley on this latest contract is guaranteed 45M. See the math problem that Elliott sees?

The RB tag for this season is 11.2M, so he is already 2M in the hole with this option exercised and that would be going up next season.

Elliott has been injury free but he is a contact back and leads the NFL in carries per game over the last three years and he and his agent would see no reason for a decline in that this season. He is the definition of workhorse back.

I do see a lot of venom aimed in Elliott's direction but when I put myself in his place, I believe I would be doing the same thing he is, his only play is to hold out.

They exercise his option but then the COO goes on the radio and starts talking about a new contract, does that make sense? Sure there was a deadline but that's no excuse, they had time. Then he makes it worse by bringing up the Gurley contract, THE player the Elliott sees as his challenger to best in the NFL.

When you add the numbers being thrown around for the QB, that same QB that's not supposed to be very good without the RB and the WR that's been with the team for 10 games, can you not see where this could get you sideways if you were him?

I could be off base here and they did address the option before exercising it but I don't think that happened or they would not have been acting so blindsided. Those numbers above are exactly what Elliott is looking at and he and his agent are sending the message before most players do, Elliott is not a taggable player.

Stephen said last week Bell's contract is the new standard but his contract appears to be about a million and change LESS than Gurley. Now remember he said Gurley's deal would be Zeke's floor and he's made Zeke a top 5 offer. LOL....read between the lines and tell me what you see. His current top 5 is obviously less than Gurley money ( which he promised ) and maybe Bell too. Bottom line, it seems highly likely Stephen gone back on his promise of Gurley money and could be a major why is not in camp with 2 years left on his deal. He and his agent don't trust Stephen Jones........

This! ^^^^

Let the money hungry bum sit out...and get fined for it. He didn't sit out when he gladly accepted such a huge rookie signing bonus when drafted in 2016, so he has no reason to be sitting out now. Why not be a man, honor your contract and show up to work while your agent works out an extension while you still have 2 years left?

The dude is being a greedy you know what. Forget him. I have no respect for greedy players like that who make such demands with 2 years still left on their current contract. Now, if it was a year from now and he was sitting out, I would understand why, but that is not the case today, is it?

Dak is that you bud?????:muttley:

I feel your pain #21 screwed it all up for you.
Look on the bright side you can go show the FO that your worth 40 million a year this coming season and without Zeke.
Can you Dak in other words can you survive without Zeke?
lol

The fact it’s more pressing is the point. Zeke’s shelf life is much much shorter. And the way he has been used by the team means more wear and tear on his body. From Elliot’s perspective playing for 3 million and getting injured this season is a heavy gamble.

Yep

And why this is a good move for Elliott. Unfortunately it’s not good news for the Cowboys and probably why so many fans are bashing him. But how can you not respect him for looking out for his best interest? Smartest thing he’s done for himself in the NFL.

Why do you keep arguing a point I have conceded?

I think in the end if we had intentions on extending him, then we’ll sign him. If not then this will play out and we might never see Zeke on the field again for the Cowboys.

My hunch is Jerry will buckle especially if we struggle early in the season and his potential 40 million dollar man looks like chump change.

Another hunch. If we don’t sign Elliott right now, we wait on Prescott and Cooper too.

Play for 3M this year and holdout for 9M next year, would you do that?

Yes but you go for the big long term contract next year with a bit more leverage
There’s really no reason for JJ to pay him now and many reasons not to...
Zeke is bluffing with a pair of twos.
