Front load the money this year and lets go already. Get Cooper done too and then franchise Dak next year or if you give him the long term you could franchise Byron and move him for a 2nd round pick.
Zeke is already scheduled for cap hits of 8 million and 9 million over the next two years, doing an extension won't add much (if any) to the cap.
The issue isn't cap room, its the two sides agreeing on the numbers.
I kind of thought the issue was in his timing. Play this year, get a new deal next year. He is arguably the best running back in the league. Him and Barkley IMO. I'd be all for paying him accordingly.
If he gets hurt, he has no leverage after 2019.
Plus, he is already underpaid.
Even if they don't sign zeke, I'd cut Crawford. Position flex notwithstanding, he's just a jag now. Not worth the money.Front load the money this year and lets go already. That’s his lot in life... Oh well...If he gets hurt, he has no leverage after 2019.

Or cut Crawford in 1-2 years. Hate to say it but we still need the guy...
I used to think so, but I'm reconsidering. I like the dline depth. With all the guys we have available cheap, I don't see that Crawford makes much sense.
The old adage is better a year early than a year late. If it's a year early when you have other options, it's time to pull the trigger.
Covington gives us more beef and is much cheaper.
Covington, Collins, Woods, Hill.
We can rotate in Jackson, Taco, Hyder if we want some smaller guys with a little more quickness.
We develop Hill and other young guys faster this way.
If Collins is the surprise signing, then we don't need Crawford for next year and should move on. Maybe. Probably. I'm not entirely sold.
Crawford just gives us a little more DT pass rush, and we'd have to be betting on the come to replace that.
While I'm not disagreeing with you but at this point Crawford is somewhat needed still. Unless Taco/Armstrong step it up we are weak at DE until Quinn gets back from suspension and Lawrence is healthy. Haven't heard anything about Crawford being available week 1 as far as health is concern but it's also possible he gets suspended which then it's a moot point anyways.
I agree. Cutting Crawford should be so you can pay Collins not Zeke. Keep those resources on the DL if Collins proves worthy this year.

He was always a JAG. Rod got him paid, Rod got Taco drafted, Rod got Hill drafted, in Rod we Rust.Even if they don't sign zeke, I'd cut Crawford. Position flex notwithstanding, he's just a jag now. Not worth the money.

I'm pretty sure his 5th year option is guaranteed. So you mean past 2020? He will have made 35 million. Every player has a chance of injury. You could say the same thing if he chose to hold out last year too. Could get injured and underpaid. I am all for paying the dude top range next year.

Players play better in "contract years". Its what they do. Cooper is the only one I would sign now.Nothing says championship like having 3 of your best players all playing for an organization they feel a disconnect with.
Just because you have the right to abuse your power doesn’t mean it’s what’s in the best interest of the team.
I doubt Zeke caught them by surprise. I’m sure Zekes side tried having these conversations before camp started.
