Tony Pollard can scoot.

The End.

There's the sum total meaningful review of Saturday's dressed-up practice session.

It's long been true, but never more so than now. The preseason is a complete, utter, absolute, unapologetic, pure money grab that offers no meaningful football purpose whatsoever. It's 3 hours to identify 1 or 2 guys that can play on the punt team. Nothing more. Both teams could have named 50 of their 53 opening day roster players in May.

The Rams left 20 of their 22 starters in California. Dallas was without Zeke, Cooper, Tyron, Lawrence, and Jones, and played the rest of the meaningful guys for a hiccup. Then it was a battle for last place in the Big Sky Conference.

The NFL has to stop this. Why show the world your underpants for just for a few dollars. The owners are pimping these preseason games out to the unwashed masses purely for profit, because the players get paid next to nothing for these games. Stop dressing these games up like Harry Hines' finest.

No, I don't want an 18-game schedule. But the NFL needs to stop insisting on 4 of these time wastes. The networks hate it. The players hate it. We hate it. The coaches mostly hate it.

It's just a good way to get players injured for the sake of blackmailing networks and season ticket holders into buying into this garbage.
CANT WAIT UNTIL GAME1....

yes money grab sure but those HI fans had great time and might become a DC or Rams fan now..that is their point but yes 2game PS 18 Games with expanded roster to let you use PS players and suit them ALL UP is needed or just 2 game PS keep it 16 RS games..

as big NFL fam id like to see 18 real game season with expanded rosters because football season is too short as it is and even though PS is meaningless we get some football after the longest off seasons in sports.. ughh

I agree. I’m not a fan of the 18 game regular season schedule either. Although it seems like it may be inevitable.

But cutting down to 2 preseason games sounds solid to me.

One dress rehearsal type game. And one for evaluating back ups.

Teams can do more scrimmages with other teams if they want to evaluate back ups against other teams.
Looks like they are looking a 2-3 preseason, adding a team to playoffs (14 total) , it looks like the players are really against to 17 or 18 games and I don't blame them.

Us old timers remember when there were 6 preseason games and the starters would play most of the time. The difference is of course the money the players make. These days you do not want to see a $15 million a year player go down to injury in a meaningless game. Back in the 60's the players were making peanuts, and most had to have a second job in the off season. And players would get out of shape in the off season and use training camp and preseason games to get in shape before the season. These days players stay in top shape year round. Two preseason games would be OK and the NFL should do what they did on Saturday and play them at a neutral site that doesn't have NFL football. That way you wouldn't see the almost empty stadiums around the league.

a lot of rookies make the roster based on their play in the 3rd and 4th quarters of preseason games. phillips, olumba, and a few wr's all helped themselves. even te's mcelroy and the other guy helped themselves. that's the purpose of having these games. auditions.
On a side note, I would love it if the NFL had minor league teams.

The alternate leagues are never going to work if they're not tied together with NFL teams like minor league baseball teams are tied to the major league clubs.

A spring football league where each NFL team can "protect" their top 40 players but all other players are available to play for the minor league team.
- They could only "protect" 1 QB from playing in the spring minor league.

There are 53 plus 10 on the practice squad during the season.
- Protecting 40 leaves 23 available (63-40).
- There are 90 on the off-season roster which is another 27 (90-63).
- That's 50 players (23+27) available for a spring league.
- With 1 minor league team per NFL team, they could use the same schemes as the NFL teams.

I think most of us at CZ would tune in to see Cooper Rush throwing to Jon'vea Johnson and Olumba/Phillips playing LB, etc..

I love them.

I would be in favor of the NFL implementing some requirements for teams with regards to ps games.
- Set some requirements for playing starters a set number of series each game unless they have injury issues.
- Maybe 1 series in game 1, 3 in game 2, and a full half in game 3.

I would not want to force Tyron or Zack Martin to play if they have a sore back; however, the Rams completely not playing starters should not be allowed.
They are organized scrimmages. Mandating Starters playing is ridiculous.

Remember players under contract especially veterans aren’t paid until the regular season. Their salaries come in 16 installments , not 20.

Rookie draft picks and Free Agents receive signing bonuses.

Agree that results might likely be different against a regular-season starting D, but Pollard hit his holes quickly and, like Zeke, tends to run straight downfield. Those traits will be beneficial against any defense.
Of course but without their starting D in there the results could be misleading. And if he’d had another 4 carries for 16 yards we wouldn’t have been as impressed. Just saying...

Ridiculous to say the preseason serves no purpose. Fans whine about it all the time but what they're really saying is they don't find it entertaining but that doesn't mean it's meaningless. It serves a very real purpose of preparing your team for the season and evaluating young players in a game setting you can not create in practice.

If you don't like it, don't watch it but don't dumb down the sport to appease the lowest common denominator fan.

They already have no real training camp anymore. To shorten the preseason as well would be a terrible idea. The fans whining about this would be the first to cry about all the increased sloppy play in the regular season as a result of getting what they asked for.

I am intrigued by the extra playoff team from each conference.

Only give the #1 seed a first round bye. Have the other 6 teams play in the wild card round.

This would add 2 playoff games to the opening round of the playoffs. Considering the tv ratings for NFL playoffs and the ticket costs. That’s a decent chunk of revenue right there.

I would be worried about adding extra regular season games too if I was an NFL player.

Lol

Yea, training camp has already been dialed down for veterans. With year round training and Mini Camps its basically become an opportunity for teams to test their Rookie prospects and fine tune the veterans. Biggest fear is injury and why veterans are limited.

I think the players from 35-65 on the team want to keep the preseason to 4 games. It's their time to shine, or fail.

Expanded rosters won't work. It's not like you're going to play different players. You'd just have more kickoff team guys.

That would mean an extra season of football for every player in 8 years. That shortens careers.

I think 16 games is too many. 14 was best.

Yes, have a training camp. But when a team doesn't play 20 of 22 starters in BOTH of the first games, that tells you how little value the preseason games area to a team.

Players stay in shape year round now. They don't work offseason jobs. Teams need to practice, but the don't need four games to play guys they're going to cut anyway.

College football doesn't have a preseason. High school doesn't. Why do the pros need this?

This is true.

More regular season games also dilutes the importance of each game, even by just a little bit.

One of the things that makes NFL football so meaningful is how important every single game is.

Making games less important, even by a small
Amount, isn’t a good thing. IMO. It’s the primary reason I don’t like the idea of more games.

I don’t have an issue with preseason. It’s better than waiting until after Labor Day to watch Cowboys football.

At least locally we get the Countdown To Kickoff each week which highlights what’s going on in Camp and elsewhere with the Cowboys including interviews. And the local broadcast continue thru the game discussing issues, et.

More Cowboys Football is always good to this fan however it’s presented. Amazing fans who spend about 52 weeks a year visiting Cowboys forum would take issue with 4 Exhibition games preluding the season.
