honest question
Yes, GMs must get results quickly even if it's not the best long term plan for the team. The GM might not be with the team long term without the more immediate time frame results.

Dak gives a team a legit and almost instant possibility of making the playoffs if the GM can just assemble some reasonable talent around him.

Drafting and developing a QB takes time and is a high risk process that often fails. Many GMs are literally putting their jobs into the hands of that QB picked in the 1st round.

GMs tend to keep their jobs when they make the playoffs even without going to the Super Bowl.

No.
Dak is a very very good “bus driver” who needs a superstar RB, WR, OL, and Defense on the bus in order to go win. You don’t pay 30 for that much less 35.
Exactly. So many posters on this board would have agreed with you at one time, as they should. Now, their fandom has kicked in and they defend the average QB that needs a team of Pro Bowlers around him to reach his average level of play.

Yes, teams will sign him for that. There are too many teams that need a serviceable QB. Like or hate the guy, the bottom line is that he has helped this team since the first day he stepped on the field. If teams will pay top dollar for Kurt Cousins who has never won a meaningful game in his life, teams will gladly pay top dollar for Dak Prescott. You can agree, you can hate him for it, but bottom line is that he is currently viewed as a guy who wins games, and is clutch.

I’ll stay out of that debate.

But I think a league wide poll might surprise you

No, I think league wide people will view a QB who has actually won games and has been clutch in the 4th quarter as being better than Kurt Cousins..

Honestly...I think they made a mistake not drafting someone to mentor this season (Ryan Finley)...in case this contract situation got out of hand....like it is now....and have a fall back plan in the works.

Dallas did just that last year. They drafted Mike White. Great value as he was drafted later than projected, but.. he hasn’t panned out, as most QBs don’t. Hence, why they’re so valuable.

On the other hand.. Dak lead his team to second round of the playoffs. Not sure why people let their personally opinions ab Dak’s ‘throwing’ abilities get in the way of the fact.. Dak is a winner, including very respectable stats. That’s worth a lot in this league.

In two or three years that contract won't be viewed as too much for him. Wait until Goff and Mahomes come up. Then QB salaries will really skyrocket. Average QBs will demand even bigger salaries than Dak is and they'll get it.

Fans don't seem to be able to understand how the QB market works. Cousins, Garappolo both received contracts that were above their "rankings". But now, they aren't considered too big.

The market for QBs is always resetting.

Well, 65 NFL coaches and GMs made their QB rankings list a couple of months ago.

Cousins was 16
Prescott was 17

Not saying I agree with their overall rankings, but thats what they had.
We Cowboys homers rage Dak higher than everyone else
—————
Walter Football ranks all 32 starters. Theyha e
Cousins 19th
Prescott 25th

Seems extreme

————
But Chris Simms ranks the top 40 NFL QBs and has

Prescott 13th
Cousins 15th

Honest question. What would anyone pay Osweiler or Garoppolo?

In a league that has a team that would hire Kingsbury because he was the losing coach that couldn't recruit Murray to Texas Tech to coach him in AZ, anything is possible and nothing is beyond speculation. Probably just me but I would have gone for the coach that actually recruited him, but what do I know?

There are a lot of owners that were not stupid getting money but spending it is a different situation.

Dak will either get $35 million or close to it from the Cowboys. Absolutely, there would be many teams willing to pay Dak that much if he was on their team.

Lets see he was NFL offensive rookie of the year, set a NFL record for the fewest picks thrown by any rookie QB, went to the playoffs 2 out of his first 3 years, the cowboys won 13 games as a rookie QB. These are all things you'd expect if he was a top 10 first round pick, but being a 4th round pick he's played way above his draft spot.
.

Top 10 picks go to terrible teams, not teams with the best RB and O line in the league like Dak had his rookie year..
Also, it's easy to play it safe when your job is to go out there and hand it off and not be a hero.
Compare that to guys like Mayfield and Darnold who are viewed as "saviours" of their franchises.

Alex Smith has the record for most consecutive passes thrown without an interception in league history. I remember this because when we played the Chiefs they mentioned it.. is he better than Brady and Brees? Nope.. two teams got rid of him even though he was "young" and in good health because they knew a play it safe QB won't get you over the hump.

When he's a FA next year? Maybe. Who knows. If they're a team with a lot of young talent and no QB, they might. I doubt a year after the CBA if $35million is even a top 5 contract.

I don't want to pay him $35m either, but if it came down to giving up premium draft picks for this team and risking that the guy doesn't end up being significantly better, wasting years, or allocating cap space that we have and doesn't really affect us one way or another, I'll always say give up the cap space. Dak is good enough, if we could stop the run last year we'd be in the NFC Championship game against a team we already beat.

Save the picks for building the rest of the team.

The Chiefs were in the same spot as us and they took a chance on that kid from Texas Tech..

Heck, they even traded up to get him.

So give him the Transition Tag and let the market set his contract value. Dallas might find that they have been negotiating against themselves all summer. Remember, Fromm, Herbert, and Tua are all going to be available in the draft. The shiny new toy will be out there for those top 10 drafting teams. Think one of them will want to throw huge dollars at the slightly dinged toy that needs batteries?

This is exactly what I've been saying. Transition tag him. Dallas can still match best offer. If Dak is looking for 35M a year Dallas has nothing to lose. Also consider the fact there are a scant few teams looking for a starting QB right now. Mainly just the Bengals? Some other teams might need one in a few years, but that's not getting Dak a 35 million dollar a year contract from them next year.
