I'm always bothered when Crawford is referred to as a "starter". It's simply semantics and wordplay.

He's a "starter" in name only, and anyone being honest knows that.

And no, I am not referring to you personally here so please don't take it that way.

It's just seeing that term associated with the player is aggravating.

He has been a starter by all definitions.
  • Played on the 1st snap.
  • Played more than 50% of snaps.
  • Played the majority of the games each season.

Occasionally a 2nd TE will play the 1st snap and be listed as starter but will play less than 50% of the snaps. A player really shouldn't be called a starter in that situation.

Crawford played the most snaps of any DL some years and was always top 3 DL in snaps played. That's a starter by any definition.

Brandon Weedon was a starter at QB for some games. He was not a starting quality QB and he was not a full time starter because he only played 4 games for the Cowboys in 2015.

There are 3 terms I use in regards to this issue:
Starter
Full Time Starter
Starting Quality Player

Crawford was a full time starter meaning he started the games, played the majority of snaps and played the majority of the games.

What you are trying to say (I think) is that Crawford was not a starting quality player.

"Value contract".
:lmao:
Add this year to the past 4 years where you have been wrong about Crawford.
You can hope in one hand and you know what in the other and see which happens first....
You make zero salient points here.

Replace Quinn with Jackson the first two weeks, then when Quinn cons back make a decision between Covington and Jackson.

We can probably sneak Wise onto the PS, but Jelks will get picked up unfortunately

“Played on the 1st snap.”

That sums it up.

But yes. I’d say he was not a starting quality player.

When your ‘starting’ RDE gets you ZERO SACKS from the position. He’s clearly not “starting quality”.

No. You just don’t like the FACTS about the situation presented to you.

I’m sorry if the truth hurts. I truly am.

knowing Marinelli and his preference for experience, he's going to automatically go with Crawford at end,.. hypothetically say if Crawford is surprisingly cut- Rod would more likely go with
either Taco or Dorace Armstrong. I can't see Marinelli going with a rookie from Game 1 unless injury situation forced him otherwise.

Crawford has had between 3 and 5.5 sacks each year that he has been a full time starter.

In 2018 he started the first 7 games at DT and then 8 games at DE (he played 15 games).
- When he started at DE, he rotated with Gregory.
- Gregory played the majority of the pass rushing snaps at RDE.
- When Crawford played on pass rushing snaps it was primarily at DT.

All of his 2018 sacks were from the DT spot; however, he did not play DE on the majority of pass rushing snaps.
- His job at DE was to play as the base DE (i.e. The run stopping DE) with Gregory as the pass rushing DE.

I'm in favor of cutting Crawford this year (If Collins is still healthy as of cut day and DLaw is near-100% as of cut day).
- However, Crawford has had value to the team over the past 5 years as a full time starter.
- The Cowboys defense was 6th in points allowed and 5th in rushing yards allowed with Crawford as a full time starter in 2018.
- Crawford's ability to move positions due to injuries to other players saved the Cowboys bacon multiple times.

The Cowboys have drafted multiple DL since Crawford was drafted but have not been able to replace him up to this point.

They have signed various free agents since Crawford was drafted and have not been able to replace him up to this point.

For 2018 they obviously want Collins, Hill and Woods to get the bulk of snaps at DT.
- That means they see Crawford as a DE that can move to DT if needed.
- They traded for Quinn to play RDE.
- If they are planning to keep Crawford, it's primarily as a DE.
- With Crawford projected to DE, a free agent DT like McCoy was not a Crawford replacement option.
I've seen people say they should have signed DT McCoy to replace Crawford.
- They did exactly what those people wanted but it was Quinn at DE (same cost as McCoy).

The Cowboys have:
  • Drafted 14 DL drafted since Crawford.
  • Signed a multitude of free agent DL, including:
    • T.McClain
    • Cedric Thorton
    • Greg Hardy
    • Jermey Mincey
Summary:
I can't see any rational reason to be upset about Tyrone Crawford.

If Randy Gregory & Taco lived up to their draft status & David Irving didn't flake out, then Crawford would have been gone already.
- I'm mad at those players, not a Crawford.

I don't deny that he has had value. But I also don't deny that the value has never lived up to the contract the way others might try.

Unable? Or unwilling? And their failure to replace him doesn't make him a better player than he is.

And yet here we are, still overpaying Crawford to have no true starter role.

I'm not "mad at Crawford". The guy works hard, does the best he's can, and plays wherever the team needs him.

But it's reached the point where he's not a true starter, gets paid like one, and may cost the team a young talented player in a roster squeeze. Time to go.

1. Tank
2. Quinn
3. Taco
4. Armstrong
5. Crawford
6. Woods
7. Collins
8. Covington
9. Hill
10. Hyder

Hoping to get Jackson, Jelks and Wise to the PS
Jackson gets picked up immediately if we're that dumb. He's already shown enough to make a roster.

Haven't paid enough attention to Jelks.

Any word on how Wise is doing? I had/have great hopes for the kid.

Nothing really specific, but if I had to say, I'd categorize Wise's performance as "not good enough to force them to keep him on the 53."

I definitely think they'll waive him, and then maybe try to sign him to the practice squad.
