Are you frustrated that Zeke is holding out or because he has 2 years remaining?

Because if it's really only the 2 year part that's getting to you maybe take a look at this. Better to understand a situation before lashing out:

If this was his last year I doubt he gets all this attention, but as it stands he's taking a massive cut compared to his peers and market value (the term used around here to justify highest paid salaries for average players) when he enters his 5th year, a year he has no control over if he were to meet or exceed expectations, which he has.

Just saying...

If this was his last year I don't think he would be holding out because Jones would have already spent the off-season negotiating with his agent. They are negotiating with Dak. They are negotiating with Amari. Jaylon just signed an extension. He would get paid. That's why I'm upset. It's because this is completely unnecessary and does nothing but hurt Zeke and the organization.

It’s obviously tied to position because that’s the best approximation of what the player would get on the market if the team didn’t have exclusive rights. It would be stupid to tie it to draft position. As if players perform in their rookie deals relative to where they were picked in the draft.

Florio is an idiot.

"The base four-year contract is tied to draft slot not position. Basing the fifth-year option on the position the player plays will, for some positions, result in the player making less. The fifth-year option for Elliott, taken fourth in the 2016 draft, is nearly $5.3 million lower than the fifth-year option given to 49ers defensive end DeForest Buckner, who was taken three spots after Elliott. Elliott gets less in year five than even the 11th pick in the draft, Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves."

Wow, that really is a dumb system.

Not frustrated. It'll either get done before the regular season or it won't.

Can't say I'm thrilled that he's holding out but not in the boat of "cut him get rid of him etc"

I don't care one way or another about the business decisions players make. I do want to see him on the field.

The whole "what should the fifth-year option be tied to" is an irrelevant red herring though. The whole rookie contract setup is an arbitrary restraint of trade designed to save teams money (and put more in the pockets of veterans); what the author is pointing to is just a tiny piece of that.

I am more frustrated with the realization that this franchise is going to be paying a TB a crap ton of money soon.

IMO it makes sense the 5th year option should be based on the draft position as the starting point. But should also allow for teams to give additional money without a contract extension just in case they want the player to earn the additional years.

Unrelated but I think it would be great if the NFL provided additional cap like the NBA for retaining their own players.

Then a new offense, new OC. Lots of changes? I hope he gets traded.

might feel a little difffernt, but if it were his last year he would be making close to 10M so i probably would be irritated too.

I think the bottom line is you cant give a guy that cant be trusted the type of money he wants....he has to show at least a year or longer that he can stay out of trouble....otherwise its going to be 2017 all over again.
