Are you frustrated that Zeke is holding out or because he has 2 years remaining?

And yet:

"The base four-year contract is tied to draft slot not position."

That's not the best approximation of what the player would get if the team didn't have exclusive rights. It's strictly about draft slot. Inconsistency is a great way to generate conflict.

They best approximation of a players value on draft day *is* his draft slot. Which is why RBs don’t typically get drafted in the top 5 and why were finding out now it was a mistake to draft Elliott that high.

That changes after four (or in this case, 3) full years in the league. After they’ve actually played you have a better estimate of their value as pros because you have three years of performance data relative to other pros.

It’s not inconsistency. It’s a completely different basis that wasn’t available on draft day.

I understand that owners don't always do right but the bottom line in this case is that by asking for additional AND guaranteed money long before it is contractually due Zeke & his agent should have expected the amount to be DISCOUNTED. It's not a new financial concept.

He asked, they offered (they didn't have to). He should have either accepted or declined while still reporting for work even if he refused to participate in live drills. I don't see where the FO has done anything wrong. If they had refused to discuss a new contract at this time, I would feel the same way.

How would you hold out if you didn't have years remaining on a deal?
You could hold out if the team franchise tagged you. But if you don’t sign the tag you technically don’t have a deal but the team owns your rights play.

I'm just sitting and waiting for the deal to get done and I feel confident it will get done. Meantime these other RB are getting ample reps that will benefit them and the team meantime according to reports I have seen Zeke has been putting in the work and is in great shape. I do think Cowboys need him and want him but I also know Zeke is not going to sit out a season let alone 2 years. I fully expect a deal will happen

Because if it's really only the 2 year part that's getting to you maybe take a look at this. Better to understand a situation before lashing out:

If this was his last year I doubt he gets all this attention, but as it stands he's taking a massive cut compared to his peers and market value (the term used around here to justify highest paid salaries for average players) when he enters his 5th year, a year he has no control over if he were to meet or exceed expectations, which he has.

Just saying...

Partially, yes i have less heartburn with it this time next year but also ONLY if he doesn’t pull some dumb stunt off field again to get in trouble. The fact he’s spitting in Jerry’s face plus two years left on his contract after all Jerry has put up with from him is just ungrateful. Everyone knows Jerry was gonna take care of Zeke next year pending no stupidity on Zekes part.

He has to show that he can actually behave. If he is acting this reckless with the money he makes now, imagine how he will behave once he has more money to spend. Hopefully the guy grows up fast and realizes his childish behavior needs to be left at Ohio State.

I've been frustrated with Zeke because I don't see Zeke trying to be the best he can be to put himself and the team in the best position to win. Some may see overall yardage as a barometer that he has produced good enough to not warrant criticism but I see someone who should be performing at a much higher level. Zeke leading the league in rushing is pretty damn good, I would just like to see what he could do if he would combine a great work ethic with his gifted natural ability. This holdout doesn't change my mind about him.
work ethic has nothing to do with him holding out. Are you assuming his work ethic is sub par?

I'm more than frustrated. I despise him. I despise any man who doesn't keep his word. The number 1 important thing about being a man is not making a lot of money. It's not marrying a sexy wife or driving a nice car. Those things are okay -- I have nothing against them -- but the number 1 important thing is keeping your word. Anyone who doesn't is a pathetic and disgusting LOSER. So that's what I think of Zeke, and I think he should be kicked out of the league. He can go play in Canada and see how much he can make there.

I expected a hold out next year not this year. That's my only issue but I understand both sides

I’m not frustrated with Zeke holding out but I am frustrated with all the hullabaloo from the press and and fans that have nothing better to do.

Not frustrated with either.
This is par for the course for ANYONE who has paid attention to professional football for a long time.
I mean, who couldn't have seen this happening.

not frustrated, but because he has off field issuses that the team has consistently went to bat for him on, he doesn't seem to care and only wants what he/his agent want. If he showed up to camp willing to play, I'd guarantee he would have a deal by now.

I'm not frustrated and don't blame him for holding out.

Same.

My only problem is it's always something with Zeke and he's coming to the table and asking for more money early after another offseason of him putting his knuckleheadedness on full display.

Also, I don't cheer for players to get big deals because of the cap. I want what is best for the Dallas Cowboys and not Zeke Elliot.

I think if we are all honest, the answer is neither.

For the moment any way, what we are all really frustrated about is how these contracts are dominating the headlines and very little actual football related news is coming out as a result of that focus. Or at least, for the moment, that's my issue.

Come regular season, if he's still holding out and the Cowboys are losing as a result, that reasoning will absolutely shift.

Honestly, I think he should have been pulling this next season... But, I honestly don't care. He is either here or he isn't... the show will go on with or without him.

If they didn't have trust issues with Zeke getting himself into trouble, they would have paid him already.

That old contract is dead.

Let it go man.

He’s never playing another down of football until he’s paid $$$$$

Show me the money Jerry!!!

Zeke has 2000 AP yds in 2018.

Best to pay him.

The whole "what should the fifth-year option be tied to" is an irrelevant red herring though. The whole rookie contract setup is an arbitrary restraint of trade designed to save teams money (and put more in the pockets of veterans);

This.

The league's compensation structure is standard union collective bargaining. Players get hosed during their rookie contracts, but after "paying their dues" they can get their windfall off the backs of the next cohorts of rookies.

Except RBs. The great ones are productive usually from game 1, but will be ground down to non-elite status by the time they hit free agency. They don't get the windfall. And teams, and fans like us, plan to use their bodies during their rookies contracts then discard them come time when all other positions in their cohort hit the jackpot in free agency. Most of the people annoyed at Zeke holding out were looking forward to discarding his lifeless husk on the trash heap come free agency.

Bell. Gurley. Zeke. Great RBs bucking the NFL compensation system. They should. It's designed to screw the guys that "stir the drink".

Zeke was right about RBs needing their own union. They're getting screwed by the current system.
