I think he has to get Cowboys into playoffs to hang on. He is good checker player in a game that requires chess.

What makes me think he actually might be is his contact he is in the last year of his deal. Teams don’t let coaches coach in the last year of their deals even the guy in Cincinnati got a one year extension making it a two year deal before being fired. I think Jerry needs to see playoff success no more wildcard wins. I think Jerry at least wants to see the conference championship game.

Yes, he and the bulk of the coaching staff are out of contract at the end of season. Where vacancies arose, they were filled by short term inexperienced coaches. This all points to a clear out at the end of the season unless they come close.

I think the clear out coaching of the Rams game
last year finally showed the Jones family that JG isn’t a solid game day guy. Their rhetoric changed after that game.

If he weren't in the hot seat, he would have already received a contract extension.

No doubt about it.

Could just be Hot Seat Theater.

Jerry doesn't give him a contract because it gives fans hope, it looks like he's holding Garrett accountable, etc. Let's pretend Garrett might get sacked. Gets the Cowboys to be the subject of more sports talk. One more way to keep eyeballs and attention on the Cowboys. But in the end, Jerry *and Garrett* know that Garrett is coming back.

I'm not convinced that Garrett is under any real threat of being dumped.

My dream, however, is to see Garrett dumped for Boy Genius II, Kellen Moore. That would be just too beautiful.

For the lolz!

Ok ok lets say he is and gets the boot what other YES MAN is Jerry gonna bring in?
Guys no quality coach(including College) who wants to have the power to make team decisions will ever accept this Job.
The Jones Family rules PERIOD!
Only coaches who are looking for a big pay-day before they ride into the sunset which overlooks the golf course will consider coming here or a Dave Campo type you know another YES JERRY YES JERRY!!!!!
Might as well Keep Howdy around.....as nothing will really change down in Big D.

Zeke's hold out punched Garrett a ticket to a new contract. Its a new excuse that hasn't been used yet.

Here's the flip side. The organization had the perfect opportunity to "sell" the contract extension last year. The team was able to rebound from a terrible start and actually managed to win a playoff game. That's the pinnacle of Garrett's "accomplishments" and would have been the perfect time to slide an extension by if they chose to. But they actively chose not to.

And now, everyone knows he's in the final year of his contract, and you can't sell or spin an extension unless he actually does a better job.

The fact that Jones dodged the question during the training camp press conference only reinforces the fact that Garrett has to produce or they're going to make a change.

Jason is a hot commodity, there are High Schools all over the country drooling.

Seriously, no playoffs, he's gone. Limp into the playoffs and lose, it depends on whos available. nfc title game, win or lose he's extended.

Barring catastrophic injuries (knock on wood), this team is too good to crash and burn. But what happens if they simply underachieve; say, 7-9 or 8-8, no postseason? Or they go 10-6 or 11-5, make it to the div-round but lose again?

Are they gonna fire Garrett? If so, what about first-year OC Moore, Jerry’s newest pet cat? If Garrett were to be fired and Moore kept, what new HC is gonna happily accept Kellen Moore as his de facto OC? Or would Jerry promote the inexperienced Moore to HC?

Jerry’s 77yo and impatient for at least one more SB. The question is, would he have the patience to start over with a new HC; one who would have to agree to adapt his philosophy to the Cowboys’ current coaching structure, where the owner has input into all coordinator/assistant coach decisions?

I just don’t see any of the above happening.

My prediction is: Garrett will get a new contract, Moore will remain OC (possibly with the long-term plan of him eventually replacing Garrett) and Kris Richard will slowly but surely be eased into the DC spot.

Meanwhile they’d better find a way to succeed in the next few seasons, because the coaching status quo is likely to continue.

According to Mickey Spagnola he is. Mickey said last year that Jason would win a Super Bowl in his 12th year with the team because Landry won his first Super Bowl in his 12th year.

Of course Landry was dealing with building from an expansion team and JG inherited a ton of talent that on was on the verge of contending like 9 years ago and has still yet to win anything.
Remember Landry was an innovator too, JG is the opposite of that.
If JG wins a SB it will probably be as a coordinator or motivational coach for the Pats.
Sadly, I think we will be really good this year if healthy but don’t see us getting any farther than usual, JG just gets outschemed when we get to the playoffs....

100% agree. If Dallas faces a McVay, Pederson, Belichick, or Payton in the playoffs they are toast.
