Despite being with the Dallas Cowboys for the better part of a decade, Defensive Lineman Tyrone Crawford's time in Dallas could be coming to an end here shortly. It may be in the best interest of the Cowboys to go ahead and cut ties with the veteran in order to do what's best for the team.

Make no mistake though, if the Cowboys decide to part ways with Tyrone Crawford it would strictly be a business move, not at all based on performance. Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli values Crawford's versatility to play defensive tackle or defensive end, but with a plethora of younger/cheaper options currently on the roster it's very possible to think we've seen the last of No. 98 wearing the star.

Crawford has been a steady hand and a leader for this defense. No knock on him at all but in this cap squeeze time for new contracts, he’s become a little pricey. And he turns 30 in November. Not ancient but his better days are behind him.

I expect him to be cut. The young DL we have now and their lesser costs make him a casualty IMO.

Nope, keep him for one more season. Lets see what these young guys can bring playing behind him. I think it is better for Dallas to cut him next season, saving like 7 or 8 mill against the cap instead of the 4 or so this season.

Him being the 31st highest cap hit for D-lineman in the entire NFL makes my stomach hurt.

Thanks to Gregory and Quinn he's probably going to stay on the roster for this season when he realistically shouldn't with the depth they have, most of which at a much lower price.

I think his cap savings if cut would be like 6 million this year and 7 million next which is solid money for a team needing to sign actual long term game changing players, not rotational average starters

I would rather retain his leadership. D Law looks up to him and the rest follow.

You've been banging this drum for years. Before this year it made no sense. This year with the depth they have and the cap money they save, it makes more sense. Doesn't mean they'll do it or even should do it, but it's worth considering.

If they still think he's one of their 4 best DL, they should keep him given the potential team aspirations. But Hyder's play and the improvement of Taco and all the young guys (if they like them) make this the ideal time to make the cut. I've been a Crawford fan but only because he was one of our top 2-3 DL and he provided useful position flex. We may not need that as much this year.

Yes.

It's time to pass the leadership torch to DLaw and put Crawford's cap space to better use.

No.......the thing about Crawford is he plays DT and DE not great but very well and his leadership is invaluable. As I've heard a few times, he does a lot of dirty work.
That was nice years ago but the problem is alot of the young guys that he mentored can now outplay him and the Cowboys do not lack leadership currently (Both Smiths, Lee, Frederick, Witten, Dak, D-Law).

There one of the few teams in the NFL where is literally a difficult decision to pick just 5 team captains.

saving like 7 or 8 mill against the cap instead of the 4 or so this season.
I've heard multiple different payouts but I believe its 6 million this year and like 7 something next year

This x10. They just paid D-Law and Jaylon Smith, let them be the defensive leader

They'll save 4.2 million in cap space for this season and clear 9.1 million for 2019.

So technically a 13.3 million cap savings move over 2 seasons and only about 5 million in dead cap which can easily be taken on this season.

I'm hoping over the next two games that the young guys show enough that sentiments won't be a factor in the final cut down. Nothing personal, the NFL is a ruthless business.

$4.2 million is the dead money if they cut this year. $5.9 million is the cap savings per

Agree and a trade wouldn't surprise me, but the position flex to be an average starter at any of the four DL positions has a lot of value. A Super Sub role for a guy who is a team leader justifies his spot on the roster for sure.
