Option A below costs 7M more than option B:
  • Option A: Crawford on the roster in 2019 but not on the roster in 2020.
  • Option B: Crawford not on the roster in either 2019 or 2020.

In order words the cost to keep Crawford for 2019 is 7M.
That is the way to look at it because next year he is very likely to either extend or move on.
Few guys are going to play out the string.
Team loses all leverage and pays max cost in that scenario.

Think TC and Cowboys are both in great spots right now.
Contending team with a vet guy who has made good money and likely wants to stick around.
Yes and a little over 2 mil is dead money. Hit cap hit for 2019 is 9+mil

Cheaper to keep him this year and just cut him after the season. Unless you need his 7mil right now to sign a guy.
Cheapest way would be extend him now.
Restructure and add 2 year to the deal. But DL stopped doing that to be cap conservative and pay as they go.

DAL has 23M in cap space right now so really no need to make room. They could sign Zeke, Dak and Amari for 23M in additonal hits this season.
In 2 years could be very different though.

Bruh cut his behind. Making way too much $$ for a jag. you can get his production with a 3 million dollar guy

Nope, keep him for one more season. Lets see what these young guys can bring playing behind him. I think it is better for Dallas to cut him next season, saving like 7 or 8 mill against the cap instead of the 4 or so this season.

The problem with that line of thinking is we can’t keep all of the DEs on the roster. You either cut Crawford or you cut someone who is an up and comer. Or you go short at another position and that only goes so far.

I was strictly talking cap, not cash.

It's both.

It adds 7M to the Cowboys overall cap if he stays for 2019.

The cap space in 2020 will increase by 7M if he is cut now as compared to cutting him after the 2019 season.
- Cap Space rolls over; therefore, even if it saves 5.9M in 2019 and 1.1M in 2020, the 5.9M rolls forward and it's 7M total extra cap space in 2020.

The above would have been for a pre-June-1st cut.

Right now because we are past June 1st, if he is cut all 7M of cap space is added immediately in 2019.

I just don't think you're gonna get a lick of pass rush from Covington or Woods, and HIll is still a pretty big question mark for me. Bottom line - I think our most dangerous pass rush 4 includes Crawford on the field
Lawrence, Collins, Hyder, Quinn

I just hate that Irving and Gregory are gone

My point on that was just to get people to understand the actual cap cost to keep a player vs cut a player.

As long as the base salary is not guaranteed, then the base salary is the amount of total cap space saved.
- Even if the "savings" is 5.9M in 2019 and 1.1M in 2020, that's still 7M in cap space saved.
- Since cap space rolls over it does not really matter when the "savings" occur.

My only issue with Crawford is his fit on our defense. If I have to cut a decent amount of salary somewhere to make room for other guys, he's definitely one of the guys I'd be looking at.

Amused at this thread when compared to some of the same math professors wanting to throw it all at Zeke without regard to anything. I don't think we need to be deleting one of the steadiest parts of our line.

I'll bet Crawford caught Jerry with a hooker and he's blackmailing him to keep returning! :muttley::D

Can't underestimate this. Like Parcells before him, Garrett has his guys and Crawford is one of them.
* there is the inner * click* crowd with Garrett's peckin' headed order ,,,the #80& perhaps even the #95 wasn't in it.

Naw, JJ don't play that ongoing financial drain of weasel spines pumping the well, it's far cheaper to play a harder game of hard ball & immediately whack extortionists, immediate family members of said extortionists & all the ensuing family pets of which it entails as well, Football Dad knows how to play that game:starspin:

Despite being with the Dallas Cowboys for the better part of a decade, Defensive Lineman Tyrone Crawford's time in Dallas could be coming to an end here shortly. It may be in the best interest of the Cowboys to go ahead and cut ties with the veteran in order to do what's best for the team.

Make no mistake though, if the Cowboys decide to part ways with Tyrone Crawford it would strictly be a business move, not at all based on performance. Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli values Crawford's versatility to play defensive tackle or defensive end, but with a plethora of younger/cheaper options currently on the roster it's very possible to think we've seen the last of No. 98 wearing the star.

I think I'd only do it to keep a younger guy we have on contract for next year on this year's 53. Crawford may be a little expensive, but we have him under contract for next year.

Collins, Covington, and Hyder are all gone next year. Beyond Hill and Woods, I don't see anything else at DT for next year if we don't keep Crawford. Ross looks like a possible alternative, but I haven't heard anything about him this year, positive or negative.

We're still light on DT pass rush snaps this year, moreso next year when Collins leaves. If we drop Crawford, we're betting on the draw. On the other hard, Crawford will be yet another year older, and another year more expensive next year. A *worse* deal in terms of the market, but we'll be in a worse position next year with guys we have signed.

It's a tough one. DT is a weakness for us. Getting weaker next year when Collins leaves. On the other hand, Crawford is a meh deal getting worse. Coming off pup for *hip* surgery. That's core. I wouldn't be surprised to see him limited this year.

Adding the surgery into it, "better a year early than a year late" sounds right.
