Under what circumstances does Garrett avoid getting the axe after this season?

The only opinion that matters on this subject is from the guy drinking JW Blue in the owner’s box. Jerry wants Garrett to be here for a long time- he’s said so publicly. Unfortunately, IMO it will take a complete collapse from this team to see Garrett leave. Jerry prefers “comfort” with his HC over winning.

Unless the team falls apart, Garrett won’t be fired. If everything fans say about Jerry is right, he sucks at GM, he undermines the HC, etc. maybe Garrett is the one saying no thanks. I will go somewhere else. The day after his contract has expired he will have multiple job offers from other NFL teams so I wouldn’t blame him to go somewhere else.
….would this explain why Jerry has allowed the Zeke contract negotiations to get to this stage, when he knew talks were forthcoming all along.....he sucks at GM (Stephen too).

8-8 or better?
Winning record, regardless of playoff status?
At least a playoff appearance?
At least one playoff win (for the second straight year)?
At least a close-fought defeat in the divisional round (like the 2014 and 2016 Green Bay games, but a better showing than last year)?
At least a NFCCG appearance?
At least a NFCCG appearance and a close-fought defeat?
At least a Super Bowl appearance?
At least a Super Bowl appearance and a close-fought defeat?
Super Bowl victory?

What about excuses based on if Zeke is there or not? What about other injuries?

Discuss.

I think Garrett will be back unless the team totally underperforms under the circumstances and he may even be back then. Those that are wishing Garrett away are probably going to be disappointed.

I think that’s the general consensus around here, but I don’t think that’s remotely the case.

I think, contrary to what many here believe, that’s probably true. He would be more in demand than people would believe.

Describe circumstances first. Do you mean performance strictly on the field? Then that answer is simple, win the SB. Off the field?...well...do I really need to explain? Lets just say it involves Jerrys boat, some Johnny walker Blue, and an indecent proposal. NEXT Topic.

JG is winning a Superbowl this season and will get the ax because his QB stats don't show up on the stat sheet every week.

Not even the record matters. The circumstances are all that matters.

8-8 again? Well, if they were scrappin' and clawin' and battlin'. He's back.

Prescott injury? Prolonged Elliott holdout? Instant reprieve.

About the only thing would be a complete implosion with very little noise via injuries/bad luck to cloud the reasons for it.

I absolutely think it is. Both Joneses have said that he needs to go farther in the playoffs. Asked on last year, that adds up to a Championship Game appearance.

They had their excuse last year after the playoff win to extend him. They actively chose not to. They can't now go back and 'sell' the idea of an extension to anyone if he goes out and does less this year. And they won't. No matter how much they like him personally, like the vast majority of fans, they have finally reached the point where it's **** or get off the pot. Win or we're forced to try to find someone who can.

But I could easily see Garrett remaining in the organization in some capacity.

I hate to say it, but this offseason has been such a mess that it is really not fair to judge Garrett this year for another long term contract.

I think Garrett will be moved to a big position in the front office if they fire him from coaching. The will create a position if they have to.

The team stays relevant until late in the year.

Or, the team has some injuries Jerry can use as an excuse.

There won’t be an acid test. If the team plays well and there’s not a clearly better option available and interested, he’ll get 3-5 more years. Probably 5.

unless the injury bug works overtime against Dallas an appearance in the NFC title game AND a good showing in the same game. Like one or two plays go Dallas’s way and they win or visa versa. I other words the on the cusp of playing in the Super Bowl.

Under the only circumstance that the owner feels he can find someone else to play the role of Cowboys HC. He wasn't hired for the same reasons that all other HC's are hired for and wasn't held to that standard.

Many want to believe that he must advance beyond the Divisional round or he gets no new deal. I will have to see that to believe it. Garrett fits a specific purpose with regards to the owner of the team, just as his predecessor did.

A playoff run will probably get him a couple more years. I really wish they'd just move on to someone else, it doesn't feel like he's ever going to get it done.
