Colin Cowherd Says Jerry Jones' Handling of Ezekiel Elliott's Contract Is Message to Other Cowboys Players

Colin Cowherd of FS1 believes other Dallas Cowboys players who are looking to get a new contract need to pay attention to what's going on with star running back Ezekiel Elliott who is close to signing a new deal. The FS1 host reacted to Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith and offensive lineman La'el Collins getting contract extensions done before Elliott and he said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was sending a clear message to the players.

"It's about a message," Cowherd said on his show The Herd with Colin Cowherd. "We take care of our people if our people take care of us. This is not about Zeke this about Jerry sending a message to Cowboys players."

La'el and Jaylon seem like bigger messages.

The message is we'd love to keep this team together. Just need a little help from the players.

They should use Jaylon Smith as an agent in the locker room. (If he's OK with it.) They can let him talk to a couple of guys to see if he can persuade them to take less like he did. Let him preach unity, togetherness, team, family, and sacrifice to them.

It's a message that you can hold out and bully the Joneses and you'll eventually get your way if people don't think the team can win without you.

Yup. The spin machine is in full effect calling this a great deal for Dallas!!

The Cowboys FO has taken care of its players throughout their history.

Hopefully, their players will see fit to take note and respond in kind! ;)

Thankfully, Zeke's contract is a done deal and more shall be rewarded.

Contract negotiations will always be tough but in the end, all goes well.

The message I’m getting is, the Cowboys FO will work with you to achieve your financial goals, even to the point of tolerating hardcore negotiation practices (protracted holdout), in direct proportion to what they (the Joneses) have determined that your talent, contribution and perceived value to the team warrants.

If, for instance, Jeff Heath would’ve decided in July he wanted to be paid top-3 for his position and then held out, it’s quite likely that what he would’ve gotten for his effort woulda been a bus ticket, a box lunch and a heartfelt “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

BS with capital BS.......let a couple of them try it and see how fast Jerry/Stephen send their azz packing. Zeke was an exception for 3 reasons
* just so happens this team is built around his position
* proven commodity... others may disagree but his resume speaks for itself
*** Caught Jerry and Stephen with their pants down

Side Note to ***.......I honestly believe they were warned of Zeke's desire for a new 2019 deal but failed to gauge how serious he was or ignored his agent's threats to sit out. Where am I getting this from? Stephen actually mentioned during an end of the season interview regarding upcoming contracts. In talking about players he intends to extend remember him saying (quote)....."I need Zeke to be patient". No question in my mind, his agents been in their ears with extension requests and/or threats of him sitting out, they just didn't listen.

Pretty sure Zeke's agent's position was there's no reason not to extend him now. He's proven his worth and your money cap $$$$ for 2019 and 2020 is pretty much set. To do it this year or next won't change your cap money IF you view him as part of your long-range plan. Other words, doing the deal 2019 or 2020 won't change anything, it's the same pile of money. If you think about it he's right. Stephen found a way to get it done. What's interesting is I'm sure I see anything to suggest he's couldn't have taken care of this March or at least long before now.

BTW....let Connor Williams, Woods or Gallup try holding out with couple years left and see how fast their azz is traded (lol).

There's no way. Would you want one of your coworkers trying to talk you out of taking a full raise that you feel you deserve for the good of the company? I would tell you to eat a ****.

Not sure how long you been watching or involved with NFL games but good lord, players NOT DO involve themselves in other players business affairs, that's NFL players 101. Research the response Tank and Fredbeard gave reporters who asked them about Zeke contracts situation couple months ago.

I like Jaylon. One of my favorite players.

But lets stop pretending he is the Dalai Lama of the NFL. He took a serious contract after sitting unable to walk properly for an entire year. Then when he did come back he was a liability who seemed afraid of contract. Yes he fought through it and he deserves respect. But he took a deal now to eliminate the risk of another blown knee eliminating his chances of getting his big deal. He didn't give up his throat.
Plus the Cowboys entered into a partnership with his sun glasses company a few days later.

These are grown men with smart agents, financial advisers, families. Jaylon isn't going to be able to convince anyone of anything to do with money. The minute he tries he gets shunned from the fraternity.
