In the many years that I've been a member of Cowboys message boards, I've always seen two recurring fan sentiments that baffle me:

  1. "I would rather that our opponent be at full strength and have all of their players healthy so that they have no excuse when we beat them, than play an injury-weakened opponent" - really? You'd rather face a strong opponent and have only a 50% chance of beating them, than an injury-weakened opponent and have a 70% chance of beating them? A win is a win and a loss is a loss in the W-L column, no matter how you got there. Injuries don't factor into tiebreakers.
  2. "We can't afford to look ahead - we need to focus on our weak opponent this week. Let's not talk about the games that lie further ahead and focus only on one game at a time." If people who say this are referring to Cowboys players and coaches, then I absolutely agree - one game at a time. But oftentimes, it seems that people who say this are referring to Cowboys fans - they seem to think that if Cowboys fans get ahead of ourselves and start talking about Thanksgiving or December or January when it's still Week 3, that somehow our behavior on an Internet message board will cause the Cowboys players and coaches to lose games by losing focus - what gives?

1) They want to be able to talk trash to their buddies about a Cowboys win, and they know a key injury to the opponent will be used by their buddies as an excuse.

2) They like pretending they’re on this journey with the players/coaches and their fandom somehow contributes to the team’s success.

#1.. I agree but there are times when playing a team at full strength is a good thing.

2014 Seattle, 2016 GB and Steelers, 2018 New Orleans... All of those games spring boarded the season and wouldn't have created the momentum without those teams being full strength.

Also, New Orleans game has became a must win game that we won't receive much credit for but will get hammered if we lose.

#2 I agree... Who cares if fans look ahead.

Funny. Particularly #2.

I guess many fans invest their emotion into the game. Thus, feel like they're part of the team.

I'm a fan, but I know the Cowboys organization couldn't careless about my well-being.

#3 Assuming a team will make a bad move(i.e trade, or sign a player) then chastise them for it, even though it hasn't happened(and in most cases never do).

Why do we get upset and trash the organization for moves they haven't made, simply because we think they might make them baffles the crap out of me

It grinds my gears when the team beats a healthy, playoff bound team and loses to a team or teams with notable starters missing to injuries, etc.

To be honest, I do a  sometimes when fans guarantee future wins. No what ifs. No maybes. All statements of 'fact'. All discussion is fan talk but fans do not play a single down, so why the proclamations?

Part of the fun is looking ahead. Just like when the schedule comes out, everyone looks to see the layout and immediately predicts a win loss scenario. Even if some do not post it. I always laugh and call BS on those that say they do not do that or predict at that point.
Everyone does it to a degree.

Norm Hitzges even said today he think this team can be 10-0 going into NE.

I'm in the play each team at full strength type of fan. This is the only way to truly evaluate the team.

Right now Dallas has played two pretenders and looked very well doing it. Let's take Dallas's first 7 games, without Brees I'm putting NO in the pretender category. Dallas goes 5-2, the two losses are to the only contenders they played Green Bay and Philadelphia. How do you feel about the team? Is the glass half full or half empty?

Playing teams at full strength is the best way to see where the team stands. Any thing else will lead you to believe you are better than you think.

Not sure what you mean by the We and Us.

All I know is my left testicle belongs to me and my right one belongs to the Cowboys.

2 problems with this line of thinking:

1) Every single NFL team has a bunch of “pretenders” on their schedule. The teams that make the playoffs and contend for titles get there by winning the games they’re supposed to win.

2) Let’s say Dallas’ 5-2 start includes wins vs the Packers and Eagles, but they somehow lose vs the Dolphins and Jets. Would that REALLY make you feel better about their title chances?

There’s so much parity in the NFL that there are very few teams that are total garbage anyways.

It’s easy to dismiss the Commanders as a bad team after we took care of business, but the point spread was only Dallas by 5.5. The Commanders raced out to a 17-0 lead at Philly in Week 1 and nearly pulled off the upset. They’re not pathetic.

Washington is not pathetic, but are they a playoff team? That would be no, so they are a pretender.

I base Dallas's season on how they perform against contenders. Going 10-0 against pretenders and 3-3 versus contenders is fools gold and will likely set yourself up for disappointment in the playoffs with an early exit and another lost season.

fwiw, both of these are typical fan behavior

1.) I agree. **** that. I don't root for injuries, but oh well Brees will be out.
2.) I agree again, I can look ahead to the Super Bowl. I can start making plans to be at the Super Bowl parade and it makes zero difference because I have no interactions OR influence with anyone in the organization.

Those statement wins, can certainly help a team, specifically a team that hasn't won a bunch (Dallas 2014) or a young team (Dallas 2016), but to be honest, with this group of guys and this QB, we've gone 13-3, 9-7 and 10-6. That 10-6 included a 7-1 finish and we won a playoff game last year against a Super Bowl winning QB. We are past the point of needing statement wins in the regular season.

#1. That's me. Here's how I think: I want to beat everyone, obviously. I absolutely love a good football game between two evenly matched teams. And I hate when their best player is taken away. In summary, beating someone who is hurting due to players out makes the victory much less sweet. Does that make sense?

I was born in 1964, so ostensibly I've been a fan since the early 70's. Complete loyalty. I believe I've earned the right to say "we" and "us".

I've invested far more than emotion into this team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The way I see it, many of us have invested so much time, energy, tears and happiness, money and years into this team. I personally have been a fan since I was really young. I was a cheerleader from K-12 and it was a dream of mine to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. I had posters of them on my wall when was five. Living in Texas, we would go to the games every season. I have vested many hours in conversation with my dad, brothers, aunts and uncles, friends and haters about this team. I buy the gear, I wear the jerseys, I sport the stickers and flags, I spend my Sundays butt firmly planted in front of my tv.. Damn right, I say “us” and “we”. lol We are a part of this organization. The unorganized part, but still very much a part of the Dallas Cowboys.

But I understand your point. Some people are more literal than others. Like my husband, (Saints fan but I’m convinced he’s a closet Cowboys fan) and when I say “us” and “we” he says “oh so now you play for the Cowboys?” Every. Frikkin. Time. So I just smile and say “You’re just jealous that I love them more than you.” :D;)

Number 2 is a big one. Fans can look as far into the future as they want. They are just fans
