Best option to replace Xavier Woods?

The best option would’ve been for them to not to neglect the safety position like they do every single year. The best option would have been for them not to rely on Woods, Frasier, and Heath.

That has no bearing on the OPs question. The OP is looking at dealing with a present situation.

I think the depth chart on the official website is our clue to what will happen with Woods out. Thompson is Woods backup at FS.
Yea I know. But in the past they've just moved Heath into the FS role and played Frazier - that was my initial assumption.

I said this before the season began. Wilson coming in for an injury to Heath or Woods would be the first step in his unseating Heath.
Yup, it's the natural progression in the nfl
Windows of opportunity for one, can be a career change for another

They change the depth chart from season to season. I have no idea what the depth chart was in the past, so I can't tell you if what you are saying happened in the past was how the depth chart indicated it should. Maybe so. But I see no point in having a depth chart if you aren't going to use it as a guide to who backups who. This season, I can tell you Thompson is Wood's backup FS according to the depth chart.

There is a reason the Cowboys kept Darian Thompson on the roster. He was a 3rd round pick of the Giants in 2016, and their starting Free Safety in 2017. But he lost his starting position in training camp in 2018, and was among the final cuts. He was signed by the Cowboys last year, and appeared in 10 games as a special teams player. The Cowboys must think there is something to salvage in him, because they kept him even though he was injured in Training Camp this year for the Cowboys.

According to his draft status, he likely has the talent. I suppose we'll see if Kris Richard can get him to play up to his draft status.

Honestly it’s the safe, smart move.

Keeps Heath at SS and Thompson slides into FS.

Keep it simple

Should they move Byron Jones to safety for this spell? Can Jourdan Lewis play it? Or just roll with Thompson or Goodwin?

Glad it's Miami this week and Brees won't play next week.

Safety is lean.
Sign Eric Berry and you solve all your secondary worries. Berry can play FS and SS. You then can keep Jones at CB with Awuzie. When either Wilson or Woods is ready, you then can get Heath completely off the field and play either one opposite Berry.

I personally would have given the Dolphins what they wanted for Fitzpatrick. But Eric Berry still being out there maybe a blessing in disguise for the Dallas Secondary.

Either we’re good enough or we’re not. I’m sick of stressing about injuries every single minute. In the “old days” we never worried about that crap—we just enjoyed football! Players were tougher back then.

Heath will move to FS, his best position, and Frazier and Wilson will play SS.

The great thing about having decent, average safeties, is when they go down, it’s not that big a deal to play a backup. The dropoff won’t be huge.

Jason Garrett always talks about how it's better to "next man up" a spot, instead of, changing two spots. So, leave Heath at SS and just find a FS. I think Thompson gets his shot and starts at FS.

Good game to rotate Ss, so Wilson can get some experience.

Except that Woods is the best one we have. I think there will be a dropoff without him out there. Having said that, I think Donovan Wilson has something to prove. And Darian Thompson has enough experience to hold serve if needed.

Safety is lean.

Thompson started 16 games at FS in the NFL in 2017.

Frazier started the first 2 games last season at SS with Heath at FS.

The rookie Wilson is practicing.

They are actually up 1 Safety in terms of availability with Thompson & Wilson returning from injury but Woods getting injured.

Just think, if Woods hadn't dropped that interception, he probably wouldn't have gotten injured later. That'll teach 'em.
