The Cowboys go into simple Prevent defense mode every time

Lol you are funny. Richards been calling our defensive plays since last year yet he gets a pass. The very thing you complain about is his responsibility. So let me ask this, how often is giving up a 1st and 20 an issue since last year? So far teams arent scoring much on us and you dont like how we are holding them, its like your chasing a ghost. And if your going to point out heath being bad you do realize you asking him in part to start out of place then roll into whatever coverage he should be in before the offense makes its play. Thats not something you do on the fly, not something richards did in seattle either. Just sayin your complaining about a non issue.

Sure, non issue against Eli and the hapless Skins offense, but likely an issue later. Heck, Heath is a non issue through 2 games, but later in the season? We ll see.

And Heath doesn't need to be part of the deception at the LOS, but he could be in the secondary, rotating to a new area at the snap. Again, a little creativity so the opposing QB at least has to ponder what the defensive call may be.

Richards may still be under the mindset of Marinelli. Nevertheless, I gave Rod a lot of patience, though nothing really changed in regards to strategy. Thus, I'm willing to give Richards a long leash too...not that I have a choice. LOL

So how does a better defensive line affect the soft quarters zone call on every 1st and long and 2nd and long?

by pressuring the QB quicker

the very idea of man up and blitz assumes you'll effect the throw, with a weak pass rush it's dumb idea
playing with a lead for 6 of 8 quarters this year ... how many sacks?

if they really thought the DL could get to the QB they'd go for it, if the DL made 1 of 3 plays it tilts the game your way
we hear you - and the coaches ain't dumb - they just ain't got the DL manpower and know it
they'd rather put the opponent on a long field

personally, I'd blitz and play man zone, force QBs to guess (I'd also hire mentally stable DEs)
but they don't listen to me

until Hill, Covington, Hyder, or somebody can provide a bull rush and or we get a another playing making DE on field ...
it's bad idea to man up on 1st or 2nd and 20. at least now - young unit ... they'll get better as the year goes on

sometimes what they do game to game seems more season strategic than down and distance tactical

I'm not calling for simply more blitzes leaving CBs and safeties exposed to man coverages with no help. I'm hoping for more threats of blitzes, especially in the A and B gaps with the LBs, and disguised coverages in the secondary. I want to see a defensive game plan with some creativity, a game plan that feels like a chess match...not a simple game plan of 3 to 4 defenses all game long, with not even an attempt to fool the offense into making a mistake. The slot CB blitz that the defense has been living on for 5+ years now is rarely fooling anyone at this point.

Again, I'm giving Richard some time this season to ease some deception and an occasional creative, well-timed blitz into the schemes....but with these vanilla defensive game plans, mostly centered on BBDB, it'll cost a team like the Cowboys in the playoffs, when the offense tends to grow conservative and the team falls behind. Sure, we hope Moore changes all that on offense, but you never know with Garrett still at the helm. He may reel him in in the playoffs.

I thought about what you said and watched some tape on this D
you're right - they go soft in situations when they could take advantage

but, forget playing chess, body punch til they break, even with this mediocre DL, which may be exceptional by year end
but they don't listen :)

dude. I'm a maniac, if were up to me with this back 7, I'd stunt and or blitz every play from all directions (run/pass)
and go man over, when your back 7 out mans 9 of 10 targets ... it's time to kill, opps like that rare in the NFL

if this is what it's supposed (claims) to be - a 1 gap read and run D - then go for it - let the team and the whole NFL know our intent is to man up and beat the opposition down, and go do it

Going to the prevent defense is just another reason why Marinelli needs to be replaced. There is no reason or situation where the prevent is a good ideal compared to playing the base defense. IMO, the prevent is just bad coaching strategy at best. If the team has s good lead, that is the time to kick them when they are down. Continuing to play aggressive defense prevents the players from maintaining the momentum and it also gives the opposing offense much needed confidence. I prefer the Jimmy Johnson approach myself
