A sad indictment. Of both the player and the team.

Can anyone recall the last 1st round pick that was outright cut this quickly? It's likely not unprecedented, but it's up there in "rarified air".

Dimitrius Underwood got cut in training camp his draft year. Oh course he had some mental demons.

Johnny Manziel too.

Just for fun, I went poking around the draft thread when it was live.

The only person actively campaigning for Watt was @Floatyworm

But it looks like a lot of people were not excited at all at the time.

I think I was coaching our spring game that day, but a poster here was texting me updates. I definitely wanted Watt over Taco. I don't think Taco was a reach by any means, he went about where he was expected to go, but I thought he was a maxed-out player talent-wise, where Watt had huge upside assuming he was past his injury. I absolutely hated and still hate the outdated "scheme fit" argument people were trying to make.

I also wanted Juan Thornhill over Trysten Hill. I had some background on Hill's coachability and did not want him at all.

I also really really liked Taylor Mays at one time so maybe don't listen to me anyway.

It isn't like he's the only first round bust in that draft. Solomon Thomas at #3. Fournette at #3. Ross at #10. None of those guys living up to their draft status either.

But none of them have been cut to my knowledge.

dude must be one lazy piece of trash to run himself out of this organization, especially when things are getting really good. He'll probably play for 2 more teams in the next 2 seasons, then find a 3rd for a preseason and be out of the NFL.

Who is going to give up anything for a guy when they know he will be cut & was a big mistake on the Cowboys part 27 games 4 sacks !

Based upon what we're seeing? Nobody.

We're getting what's inside the box!

How long did Carver play here? I'm willing to bet far longer than two years. Same for LaFleur and even Carpenter.

Taco is earning a special place among all time draft busts.

"Rarefied air".
Charlton is the first Dallas Cowboys first round pick since 1984 (Billy Cannon Jr.) not to last at least three full seasons with the club.

And you really cannot count Cannon since his career was cut short in his rookie year.

Then you have to go all the way back to Rod Hill in 1982 in order to find a bust of this magnitude.

Two notable examples there, thanks. Funny footnote, we actually ended up signing Underwood and he played for us for like two years.

That is rarefied air, indeed.

Can't win them all. We've had a lot more hits than misses the last few years. It's not nearly as bad as missing on a qb with a first rounder.

Half of that is Taco's malfunction but half of that is NFL will teams will give a first round pick ten chances before cutting ties. Dallas is one of the few teams where Taco would be fighting for a roster spot instead of being handed a starting job just because of his draft position.

Ereck Flowers was drafted 9th overall and couldn't play from the start, that is a much bigger draft bust than this fiasco.

Sets quite a bar among their recent draft successes, doesn't it?
