Is that the latest, lamest excuse?

That "expecting a 1st round pick to stick around for more than 2 freakin' years is now "unrealistic "?

Exactly how low do you feel you need to lower your expectations and standards in order for this team to meet them? How low does that limbo bar actually go?
Hitting on every pick is unrealistic - even first rounders. I'll take 5 of 6 and so would every single GM in the league.

As stated in other threads, they blew this one, big time. But to their credit, they also hit on a quite a few mid-low rounders. Brugler tweeted that they passed on Watt coz he wasn't a good fit? Lesson learned....just draft the best damn player, the rest will take care of itself.

This one is kind of a reach for me. What does it matter who the next drafted at the position was unless you're drafting for need? There are many players at varying positions livable. Show me the next 10 players drafted after our pick and that would tell a better story.

Hitting is a far cry from the record setting bust we're actually talking about here. And hits don't erase misses, certainly not misses like this.

According to your other post, the scouts were split. May have been 60/40 Watt with the coaches 100% behind Taco, I don’t know. But not letting the scouts do their job wasn’t the issue

Yeah, it was. The consensus in the war room was to go with Watt. That was overruled by the coaches - Marinelli and Garrett first and foremost - and that's how we got here.

And they need to be held accountable. Not at this point in the season of course, but ultimately, they will be.

Anybody who has been in a successful organization knows that every organization makes mistakes. What sets the best ones apart is identifying and admitting a mistake as quickly as possible and correcting it (or moving on). Once they knew he was going to be a bust they should have cut bait, and they did.

'Successful organizations ' don't make blunders this big in the first place.

You don't get to 'give them credit' for this screwup.

Even the patriots miss on first round picks...I don’t get why people are making this to be such a massive deal. Sure he was a blown pick but how many other picks in the last 5 years have been fantastic....got to look big picture here

That's right. Apparently successful organizations never make blunders that big. I guess the Patriots didn't draft DTs Malcom Brown and Dominique Easley in the first round of successive drafts in 2014-2015 - neither of whom are on the team anymore. Easley was picked 29th overall (Taco was 28th in his draft), and was cut by the Patriots after two seasons.

One must wonder if they expected Taco to man the RDE or platoon with DLaw at LDE because the run stopping would be more important at LDE than at RDE, the traditional speed pass rushing position. One has to wonder if they feared Watt was just a 3-4 OLB who couldn’t play with his hand in the dirt.

For me, there’s nothing in Taco’s game that says RDE going against the best LTs in the NFL. He is built as the traditional LDE stopping the run first and maybe getting 7-8 sacks per year. However, DLaw is the absolute stud LDE, bringing much more pass rush than other guys at that position.

We’ve heard “soft” and “entitled” to describe Taco. “Entitled” was probably the final straw. He thought he was better than he was showing. He didn’t think he needed to work or earn it, and he was disgusted that lesser players and lower draft picks played ahead of him, yet he refused to work on his craft and do the dirty work. Coaches soured on that very quickly.

They're winning Super Bowls? Maybe that's the difference?

Successes don't erase failures. Look at the "big picture" and see that the RDE position has been a complete mess for the last several years and this blunder is a huge reason why.

And then look at the even "bigger picture" to see that our defensive linemen overall have been one huge bust.

That is an impressive list, no matter how you slice it.
Watt on this team would be ridiculous!

NO TEAM is perfect picking draft picks, lots of mistakes and busts every year rounds 1-3 where you will have BUSTS 4-7 less judged..

we arent the first nor the last to make mistake.. the last 5 years the drafts have been light years better then the previous 10..ill give WM a pass because again no team no scout no franchise is perfect in the draft..

Hindsight sure is nice and its priceless shaving internet GMs question moves.. off the high horse, move on.. you know who you are …..:))

overall we are doing quite well stacked against the bets in the league at hitting in the draft and building our team draft first mentality...

You have to go back 37 years to find a 1st round pick that was gone this quickly.

Maybe for the Cowboys. More generally, over 16% of first round picks (about 1 in 6) don’t make it to year 3.

Sorry Stash, but your position here is irrational and emotional. It’s generally understood that the draft is a bit of a crap shoot. Failures are inevitable. You try to hit on more than you miss. There’s no question that the Cowboys have done that in recent years. So, yes, the successes DO mitigate this failure. Calling it ‘epic’ or ‘record setting’ doesn’t change that. It’s just rhetoric that comes off as petulant.

This just isn't true. You could argue that Dallas can't afford to make blunder this big...and this was a big one, but to say successful organizations don't make mistakes this big just isn't true.

Just a few examples
New England Patriots: Drafted Chad Jackson in the first round in 2006. Played in 12 games as a rookie, 2 as a sophomore and was released after his third training camp.
Philadelphia Eagles: Drafted Danny Watkins in the first round in 2011. Played in 12 games as a rookie, 11 as a sophomore and was released after his third training camp.

I could probably keep going, but these two jumped out

I'm truly sorry if the truth hurts.

But no, the successes to not "mitigate" this failure. And they do not "excuse" it.

Like I've said a million times, I've seen plenty of fans who lose their minds when the Cowboys get criticized. They can't handle it.
