One the reasons Rod was brought in was his ability to coach up mid-talent DL. Other than a few top tier picks, most of those guys are mid tier picks, so that was an obvious strategic choice by the FO brain trust. The Taco pick seems to be an admission of the need for talent following a poor
Previous defensive season.

Wasn't mid-tier talent only a valid excuse in the first year or two after transitioning to a 4-3? We should've added enough talent by now that we don't have to rely on a magic maker.

I don’t have issues with displaying names/number of past drafted DL, I would like think McClay can re-group his troops and come up with a better strategic evaluation of how they evaluate
DL talent and draft board value.

My issues still with the team is Scheme fit.. Coach preference and Coach/Position value, and how i think It’s impacting how the Cowboys draft/acquire DL via draft, FA, trade

1) Scheme fit - if cowboys have no issues drafting a 237 lb randy Gregory to instantly making him a 4-3 DE with his hand into the ground, why would they (Marinelli?) have an issue with a 252 lb. TJ Watt
(who was 15 pounds heavier) with his hand in the ground ? to me, the better coaches make that happen.

2) Coach preference – I wouldn’t have a problem with Marinelli’s preference, ( just as jimmie johnson had his own DT preference too) and I know some here on the board have in their minds with prototype “ fatties” but I feel so long as we can get average weight 300 pound guys that play much bigger than their suggested size, and prove they make it difficult on a regular basis- I’m fine with that. But the problems is… it’s still ever a revolving door of JAGs nick hayden, terrell mcclain, cedric thorton, stephen paea, Richard ash, brian price, antwuan woods etc., etc.

3) Coach/position value – it’s a reason why this team remains having such a trend of JAGs , decent types but never difference makers. Never one that alter/ changes the dynamics of how teams have to run the ball against us. And that seems to be because we have such low regards for the 1 tech role. With only the cedric thorton FA signing/ failure, we have tinkered with bargain based FA and very late round chimes but still we have come up empty.
Is it Marinelli or McClay that is buying into, or selling this philosophy that we don’t have invest higher and more when it comes to that 1 tech role ? We can continue to go cheap and low value and still come up rosy? We can’t get a 4th round pick guy who excelled vs run and one of the better run defending DT prospects in the NFL draft ?

it's not like McClay & co haven't been trying with the likes of Dlaw, Gregory, Maliek, Tapper, Taco and Hill, and even Irving off another team's practice squad.
I don't have a problem with thinking McClay can re-group the troops and try to improve the DL. I'm all for it. And if the weak link is Marinelli, fine, make a move. I have the feeling that he's being scapegoated here because some folks want more sacks.

The things I like that Marinelli instituted is the constant hustle mentality with all folks rallying to the ball, those are philosophies that can be attributed to him and I happen to agree with. I don't think he has any more involvement in making individual picks than any other position coach - it's all about players available at positions of need and potential fits.

I think Dallas would draft a stud safety or DT if the right one hit their draft spot and a more valued position didn't have the right fit available. But they would have to have elite attributes, like Vita Vea, or Jamal Adams.

Actually it Was something they came up with after Ware left and they had no plan B.

Now do OL. And LB. And CB. I'm not trying to put lipstick on a pig, we haven't been as successful on DL and that's plainly obvious. But I don't know what this thread is getting at. Should we fire Will McClay? He'd have his pick of NFL jobs if we did.
I think the point of the thread is that we're terrible at drafting D linemen. The question is why? It's a question I often ask myself.:(

It's all good. Debate away. I was plugging my .02 why I believe firing Rod isn't a solve-all.

It's funny that there are few of these guys who hated Linehan (I did, too), also hate Rod and also hate Garrett. You'd think we weren't a contender or something. Or that the coaching has absolutely nothing to do with the success on the field.

How can we be so successful as an organization in Draft but DLine draft philosophy has been below average...just a little self inventory... culmination in past 10 drafts releasing a 1st Rd pick is an indictment on the entire organization. It is a colossal failure...
Bottom teams consistently have this symptom.

More like average. The 83% success rate elsewhere is elite.

That's not really all that bad, considering you're cherry picking a position group and the picks are spread throughout the draft.

Lawrence is a fantastic player.
Crawford, Collins, Gregory, and Lisemore could all play.

When we ran the 3-4 our NT was 280lbs and would be turned into a pretzel by the center and guard double team. Meanwhile the Pats and Steelers were winning Super bowls with 340lb NTs that were immovable forces. I don't know if it's a JJ thing or what but we haven't figured out the NT/DT position for a long time.

Since Glover we have not had the right player clogging the middle.

I believe there are several reasons.

1. DL's are hard to draft. You really have to know your stuff to find the ones who can play. We......don't.

2. You absolutely must pay attention to certain traits. When it comes to DL, the most important are lateral agility, quick first step, and motor. I'm not sure we......do.

3. Scheme. We only are drafting guys who we believe fit our scheme. We've passed up a ton of talent, esp at DT, due simply to not believing we needed that type of player.

4. DT is not our priority. We don't get the importance of the position.

5. (Broken record coming). We don't have a football guy in charge, one who understands the importance of DL.

Actually, I am. I know people inside that building and I know exactly the part that Rod plays.

And from the outside, I can see where the biggest area of disappointment continues to come from. Rod and his Rushmen.

And folks like you will try to defend him now, just like you tried with Linehan, and then when he's gone you'll try to pretend like you never said a word. I've seen it a million times.

Agree completely with you in re: to Linehan however, you dishonor yourself by forgetting it's only week 2. I don't know why your calendar is telling you it's week 10 of the season. A good act does not wash out the bad nor the bad the good. So while you were ahead in points as far as Linehan is concerned, your creditibilty is forever tainted due to your bizarre belief that we're nearly halfway through the season. Im typing this while taking a most righteous dump and yet the foul stench of poop is being monopolized by you and that's not fair. I ate garlic earlier- you have no right to act smellier than my bowel movement. But I'm gonna keep an open mind in all this and see if I can get any inside info on the cowboys before I flush. I'll keep you posted if it turns out that being full of shart was the correct approach you took.

Do we look good on D right now? Not at all where we all would like to be but, I recommend you brush your teeth and think things thru before you decide to become a magician. Pulling tricks out of your *** is not as cool as you think. Yawn..

If you need to talk about any issues going with you, reach out to me. Concerned and would like to help if I can, although you'll have to see a specialist for your burns, not my field of expertise. Although I can make like you and give it a shot like I am.

Fire Methuselah. The false prophet 'Rushmen whisperer'. The guy that went to bat for these busts like Taco Charlton, and brought in one disappointment after another like Henry Melton or Stephen Paea or Cedric Thornton.

Expose the overrated fraud for what he is. A guy living off of past glory that the game has passed by.

End this charade.

I wish the mods would pin your post until Jerry has a moment of clarity and fires the fraud THAT JERRY HIRED.
