If people saw him play or saw him run there would be no question, when he hit the afterburner there is no one who could keep up, Meredith once said he couldn't over throw him on a deep route. Not only fastest Cowboy fastest guy ever to play in the NFL.

It's not that easy. Back in Bob's day there wasn't as much competition for a gold medal. And everything was hand timed. Eye tests certainly don't mean much.

The fastest official electronic times at the combine?

1 John Ross 4.22
2 Chris Johnson 4.24

And even the combine's official times since 1999 are only "partially electronic".

Does make for an interesting conversation because there aren't clear answers...fastest player or fastest Cowboy.

This is insane. Jason Peters ran a 4.93 40 at 328 pounds on his pro day. This begs the question: How in the hell did Peters go undrafted?

If we use the same format as NFL Network in placing fastest players as those who have made their rep as football playmakers instead of straight line 40 time guys with zero football

Top Five Fastest Cowboys players: (my list)

1 Bob “ bullet” Hayes

2 Joey Galloway

3 Deion sanders

4 Rocket Ismail

5 Tony Dorsett

Interesting as Tony Dorsett has been legendary renown for being one of fastest players in entire NFL – but does he even crack the top five fastest Cowboys player of all time ?
(Honorable mention hershel walker)

A couple of names that were great track guys who didn't pan out as football players...

Jim Hines, the guys who broke Bob Hayes 100M record. Nicknamed "Oops" by his Dolphin teammates. NFL career 2 catches for 23 yards, 1 carry for 7 and 22 yard return. Named 10th worst NFL player of all time.
Renaldo Nehemiah, first man to run the 110M hurdles under 13.0; considered one of Bill Walsh failures. Three years in the NFL 43 catches, 745 yards, 4 TDS, has a Super Bowl ring from the 1984 season with the 49ers. Became expendable in '85 when the 49ers drafted Jerry Rice.

this is fast

It's all relative.

There is (or was) a video with Usain Bolt over-layed with a Bob Hayes video...

Bob was fast but some of the stories get absurd. There are stories claiming that Bob ran over 30mph.

Usain Bolt peaked at 27.6 mph. There is zero possibility that Bob Hayes ran 30mph.

Forgot about Wright.
There was a period during the Raiders mini Renaissance in the mid 90's when they had Wright, James Jett, and Rocket all on the same team. Thats some serious speed at WR. Although I think Jett was the only one that really produced. Jett was kind of Alvin Harper to Irvin's Tim Brown

They had James Trapp at CB too, who won the NFL'S fastest man comp

Starting at 0:56 in the video, Deion is so far past the WR on the deep pass attempt it's funny. That WR is James Jett:
Jett was also an Olympic sprinter. While at West Virginia University, he was a seven-time All-American in track, finishing fifth at 100 meters in the U.S. Olympic Trials in New Orleans, earning him a spot on the 4 x 100 m relay Olympic team, that won the gold medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics with a time of 38.95 seconds. He also outran eventual Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis in the 100 meters during prelims to the games.

Jett ran the first two rounds of the 4 x 100 m relay in Barcelona, then gave his spot in the finals to Carl Lewis. All team members earned a gold medal. Jett earned NCAA indoor and outdoor All-America honors in the 50 meters, 100 meters and 200 meters during his career and finished as NCAA runner-up at 100 meters and 200 meters in 1992.

Starting at 4:06 in the video, Deion flips his hips to transition out of his back-peddle after Rocket has passed by him but Deion closes the gap and ends up past Rocket.
Rocket Ismail ran a 4.28 forty.

Hays won a gold in the Olympics, yet these arse clowns at NFL Network gave the fastest player title to Green of Wash.
2010 Cowboys practice squad player Teddy Williams ran an official 100 meter time that was faster than the best 100 meter time for Bob Hayes...

Bob did blow by players that's the reason the zone D was invented, as a football player overall ability I agree about Deion but he would not of covered Bob 1 on 1 flat out. Want to see fast watch the 4x100 64 Olympic final.
Bob Hayes fastest 100 meter time was 10.05.

Cowboys 2010 practice squad player Teddy Williams ran an official 9.90 100 meter...

Who would you say is the fastest Cowboy in history?
Bob Hayes? Deion Sanders? Someone else?

Below I'll link to the greatest *demonstration* of speed in NFL history. He scored the fastest touchdown. 3 seconds into the game. 14:57 into the first quarter and he had a touchdown. How is that possible? Do you know his name and the legend of his purported 40 time?

As for most impressive 40 time in NFL history I'm gonna throw you boys a curve.
There is one well known lineman who weighs in at 284 pounds. He ran a 4.69 at the combine. Do you know his name? I'll give you a clue: the word impressive is an understatement to everything he does on a football field.
Fastest athlete relative to his competition...

In fairness today's tracks are WAAAY faster than running on dirt or cinder, as old track guys had to run on.

....and everything was hand timed. And Hayes never ran a 40. He was clocked at 5.26 in the 60 yard dash.

Hand times have always been faster than electronic times...

I'm sure you googled that, but having timed track back in the 70's we always have 3 timers and took the difference between the three. And frankly, it depends on when you start the watch. But you know, whatever helps you sleep is fine by me.
