what they are doing is wrong, you can tank for a QB but giving away good players is outright lunacy.who in their right mind will give away a franchise left tackle, the 2nd most important player on the team?

I don’t really agree. They aren’t really tanking for a QB. They are accumulating massive amounts of 1st thru 3rd round picks in the next few drafts. Accumulating those picks has the benefit of not being very good and assuring that at least their own picks are high ones. I have long envisioned the strategy of building a NFL team by trading players and picks for a couple of years to accumulate multiple picks in each round for several years and riding those players for 8-10 years and do it again. Not sure if it will work with the cap as so many players will need new deal all at the same time but I can’t fault a new regime for trying what they are doing. It is going to be very interesting to see if it works for them.

This is a sort of macro, long curve of history kind of question for fans who are ..... older.

What happened to the Miami Dolphins?

I grew up in the Seventies and Eighties. In that period, the Dolphins were definitely one of the NFL glamour teams. The Perfect Season. Championships. Legendary coach. Superstar quarterback. Exciting city.

It would be interesting to see who were the most popular teams in that era. But I would guess the Cowboys, the Steelers, the Raiders, and the Dolphins (maybe the Packers and obviously the 49ers in the eighties).

I'm not sure they're in the top 20 right now.

What happened?

This is a great thread. The Dolphins were a premier team in the late 70s and early 80s. Here is my opinion on what happened:

1. After Marino, they hit the QB drought. They have not found a guy that be their franchise QB although they have tried over and over again.
2. They have wallowed in mediocrity, which by default, has not allowed them the blue-chip draft picks in the first round (i.e. drafting a guy like Luck, Mayfield, Wentz, Goff etc.)
3. They have had some very bad free agent signings.
4. They have made unbelievably bad coaching decisions. After Shula and Jimmy...not much to speak of there.
5. It's the uniforms man. Nobody is afraid of aquamarine :)

Give away?...They got 2 #1's for a pot head. They got more than the Raiders got for Mack. I'd make that deal all day...everyday. They are going to rebound very quickly. The GM is doing the smart thing. Cleaning house...stock piling draft picks...will have over 100 million to spend in free agency. This season will hurt..but they will be a contender by 2022/23

They seem to be making the same decision Gruden made, we've gone as far as we can with this group, time to retool. It is a risk but they know they've got to have a real top 10 QB to compete and they're tired of playing in the AFC East for scraps.

They have questionable ownership and the one when Johnson went there forced him to let Marino have his way and this owner got into a shouting match with his HC last season and he split.

They've sent the message to this team "we don't expect much from you". We're waiting for the next guys to show up. These season ticket holders and sponsors should have a really warm fuzzy for the owner.

I actually think you're right. They've been middle of the pack for 20 years. The only way to get playmakers and especially a QB is to tank.

yeah and how is it working out for the raiders.this forum overrates draft picks big time.I prefer to keep franchise players, you can tank for a Qb and also help him by surrounding him with good players.if the team is trash then you are hamstringing the new QB.

There have been some great responses. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is franchise branding. This is a point I've made in the past. Glamour teams usually have something extra and distinctive that helps them build a following outside of their geography. At least in the Seventies that was the case.

The Steelers were the team of blue collar America. Their fans were the most likely to be missing teeth.
The Raiders were the team of rebels, hippies and counterculture. If you knew a Raiders fan, there was a good chance he had served a few days for punching a cop. They were also a personality cult. I would guess that explains their decline.
The Cowboys built America's Team - a weird brand that combined Bible Belt squares with a touch of wholesome Hollywood glitz. The born-again coach. The Navy veteran qb. The lightly-dressed cheerleaders who probably would probably only go on a first date to church. Player appearances on family-friendly TV shows. etc.

I'm not sure what the Dolphins brand was. Certainly glitzy. I would be interested in hearing how well people think it has served them.

I'll tell you what happened, mack!
1. A bad coach
2. Political and social turmoil.
3. Player defections and trades
4. A belief that they will tank this year.
5. Trevor Lawrence

Didn't they get 2 firsts for him? That's a good deal for an overrated LT. I'm more confused about why they got Josh Rosen. I thought they were hoping he could be their franchise QB. Why even bother getting him if you're just gonna tank for a QB?
Rosen throws a good ball. I am guessing they will leverage picks for Lawrence next year.

They haven't had a QB since Marino.

No QB = no success.

Miami is in Florida. Old people live in Florida. Old people die faster than young people.

IMO, they’re still trying to replace Shula and Marino.
