I thought he played well too. Granted, it was vs the Dolphins, but still. My petition: when Xavier Woods returns, start him and Thompson then move Heath back to special teams and dime packages. Who's with me? Sign the petition!

If Heath keeps playing like he has the last three games, there's no way in hell you bench him.

But given history it is unlikely that Heath keeps up this level of play against better opposition

You can't translate ability at free safety to being able to play strong safety. The responsibilities differ. Heath is a free safety playing strong safety despite run support not being his strength. Woods and Thompson are both free safeties who might prove to be worse than Heath at run support if put in that role.

The best bet for improvement at strong safety is Donovan Wilson. If the role was just playing the run, we'd have Kavon Frazier out there because he plays the run like a linebacker.

I've been mentioning Thompson all offseason. I would not call it hyping him but I had gone back and reviewed his game footage as a starting FS for the Giants in 2017 and thought he would be a solid backup Safety.

I expected Thompson to do a good job in pass coverage based on his preseason and based on when I reviewed his 2017 season as a starting FS.

Run defense was my concern. In the preseason he played out of control in run defense; however, he looked OK in run defense against Miami and had that big stop when Miami was down near the goal line.

He does have good size but I don't recall seeing him play any snaps at SS in the preseason.

I'll say this....

Frazier - Heath - Thompson outback is as about as much fear a WR or our own D can handle in strict run defense

Those 3 are throwbacks - each one pulverized players in this game...... It's on the tape for all to see. I thought Thompson had some big hits, but dagbum Frazier almost ended 2 guys careers. That last series - I guarantee the film session there was fun

Heath never needed to be benched. Just take him out of the box. He's good in deep zone, and actually makes plays there, unlike the rest of our secondary since forever.
