As I think back to the early/mid 90s, I remember knowing confidently that the Cowboys were going to be right there to compete for the championship.

They had everything: a great coach (Jimmy Johnson), three/four/five REAL super stars, solid supporting players and players that respected, and feared, their coaches.
Jimmy's championship teams showed up every game READY to play.
.
I haven't felt that "love'n feel'n" since 1996. Age, and off the field issue, caught to them. They were never competitive again.
.
I don't feel that vibe with this Cowboys team either. There's just something(s) missing. Mostly, I think it's chemistry, and players who don't really care about winning.

~sigh.....where have all the Cowboys gone?

My dad has said the same exact thing you just said. I'm young so I'm obviously excited. But if you are a fan that has been around for the Super Bowls, totally understand why you think that way. You have 23 years of proof.

You think you were confident? Immediately after the 1992 playoff loss, I told all my friends that the Cowboys were going to win the next 3 Super Bowls. They all laughed at me. If not for a missed pass interference call on Deion Sanders, they would have done it....

I hear ya. The players are pretty much about themselves in today's NFL. Jimmy preached teamwork and ALWAYS had his teams ready to go. Yes, there were some bad games back then but they were not the norm. Jimmy's players had heart. Players now days have fat wallets. But you're right, l can't say l feel that confidence in this team either. Back then, it went without saying...

To me, back then losing a playoff game wasn't as bad, because the Cowboys provided so much excitement and entertainment during the regular season.
Everytime I watched, I can count on Emmitt, Troy and Michael to do something spectacular.

Oh, I can't forget Alvin Harper. How big was he in big games?

You won't see teams like the nineties Cowboys teams anymore. Even the Patriots are more business than camaraderie.

They went from the worst in 89 to Super Bowl champs in 92 and not just champs but a dominant team.

Aikman in his 4th year.

Darren Woodson was not even a starter in 92.

Yes, those were great times as Cowboys fans when we expected the Cowboys to win SBs and if not; it was because the Cowboys shot themselves in their own feet.

One of the saddest days in my sports watching life was viewing the live press conference during high school of Jimmy resigning or getting fired after the second SB victory; robbing the Cowboys of the great opportunity to win 3, 4, or 5 SBs in a row.

The Chicago Bulls in the late 90s made the same mistake as Jerry Jones. I.e., breaking up a dynasty.

Thus, both the Bulls and Cowboys (excluding the '95 SB victory) have not won championships since then.

Football isn't the same as it used to be.

1996 was pre-free agency and the salary cap had just started a couple of years earlier.

Both those things changed the game significantly.

Free agency ruined the game. (Insert the quote by Bruce Willis from "The last boy scout" here. "Free Agency ruined the game".

Now it's like the magic at the end of the movie "now you see me". They keep moving around until nobody knows where they are at. Then they turn into money and disappear.

Even with free agency. This team is very similar to the '92 team. Everyone may have envy for the Patriots. But it is my opinion that they just knew how to use free agency right. Not over paying and let their players get notoriety and endorsements after winning SB's. My opinion stated there.

It is also my opinion that the Cowboys are doing it correctly now. They just need their players to "buy into that type of system by asking for less to gain more". ... So to speak.

I STILL dislike free agency.

Harper was going to be amazing. He was one of the first ones to use free agency. He headed to a different team. The Commanders I think. And you never heard much from him again.

He stated this later that he loved the Cowboys. Sometime between 99 and 2000 I think.

If I remember correctly, we brought him back to the Cowboys for a few games in one of those years.

He left for Tampa with the goal of being a #1 WR.

This team is not similar to the 92 Cowboys.

The 92 Cowboys could call the same run play the 2019 Cowboys called yesterday and have more success. However, they also called sweeps, tosses, counters, and draws for Emmitt as well.

The 92 Cowboys defense was stout and had a no bend and no break philosophy.

The 92 Cowboys special teams especially on punt and kickoff returns were a lot better.

The 92 Cowboys offense could exploit teams most of the time through the air when they ganged up on the run. Irvin was a true #1 WR who demanded the ball even when he was double teamed.

And of course, the 92 Cowboys had the best head coach who liked to dominate opposing teams. I.e., it was rare for the 92 Cowboys to get outcoached for an entire game.

What’s missing is the head coach, as witnessed by the horrible game plan yesterday. They’ve got everything else;

- Dominant offensive and defensive lines
- A franchise QB1, RB1 and WR1
- Talented young, innovative coaches in Kellen Moore and Kris Richard
- A dominant top 5 defense
- Playmakers who are always around the ball

This team still might win a Super Bowl but I wouldn’t bet on it, not with Garrett as coach unfortunately.
