I remember knowing the Cowboys would compete for a championship the early 90s

As kid, growing up in the 70's and 80's, I loved the Cowboys (still do) but back then, it wasn't about the regular season, we were in the playoffs and that was without question.. then the turn in mid 80's and it was downhill from there until 90's. While the 90's were great and the 3 out 4 SB, I never really felt the same about the Cowboys once Coach Tom left and really the way he left. I don't know if it is me getting older or what, but I just don't have the passion for the game like I did as a kid. I still enjoy the games and I do love this Franchise but it's not at the same level as it was with Coach Tom.

Join the crowd. 25 years of ineptitude and counting. Jerry must get all the credit so this team will never win again in his lifetime.

As I think back to the early/mid 90s, I remember knowing confidently that the Cowboys were going to be right there to compete for the championship.

They had everything: a great coach (Jimmy Johnson), three/four/five REAL super stars, solid supporting players and players that respected, and feared, their coaches.
Jimmy's championship teams showed up every game READY to play.
.
I haven't felt that "love'n feel'n" since 1996. Age, and off the field issue, caught to them. They were never competitive again.
.
I don't feel that vibe with this Cowboys team either. There's just something(s) missing. Mostly, I think it's chemistry, and players who don't really care about winning.

~sigh.....where have all the Cowboys gone?

Nice troll attempt, hater Shane.

Who left Dallas for New England? Belichick didn't coach in Dallas did he?
I recall him saying ,he'd been Rodger Staubach's after practice ,targeted receiver, shagging his passes ,in the past, I don't believe he'd been on our coaching, training staff at any time,as that's probably something I'd not likely to forget about.

Its all coaching. 100% and never let anyone tell you any different. Once you amass the talent capable of winning it all, it then comes down to coaching. The coach that can motivate the player to overachieve, the coach with legitimate schemes on offense and defense, the coach you know will be prepared, the coach you know will call the right plays, the coach you know will not be outcoached. That is what it takes and that is what this team is missing. Jimmy Johnson was all those things. You knew he wasn’t going to be the reason if they lost. Garrett is so far from that and that’s why old timers from the 90’s know this team has no chance as it’s currently constructed. The man at the top is simply incapable.

Football isn't the same as it used to be.

1996 was pre-free agency and the salary cap had just started a couple of years earlier.

Both those things changed the game significantly.

Everyone plays by the same rules. So, rule changes confer no advantage or disadvantage to any one team.

The script has flipped the past 25 years and this feeling resides with the Patriots and their fan base. I agree hard to get "real" excited about the future when you can't get over the hump in a big game. For me if this team can't establish the run vs a team gutted by the run then where is this team really.

The current FA system started after the 92 season when the NFL realized the Cowboys were 4 legit starters deep at most positions. March 1, 1993. At least that is my opinion on why it was started and when:)

It will never be that way again. And even though I loved the JJ years after we started winning it was far too short. The Landry years of the 70's and early 80's were great because the regular season was like pre-season. We knew we were getting to the playoffs.
