CB Kevin King (Packers) could've been our 1st round pick

Ironically Packers CB Kevin King, who will miss Cowboys game, was strongly rumored to be among the candidates to be in final decision to be the Cowboys 1st round pick selection in 2017, along with Taco Charleton and TJ Watt.

But supposedly King's career has been so derailed by injuries, I heard he's missed 18 games in the last 3 years. That sounds like another injury plagued Mo Claiborne situation that we've seem to dodge.
and BTW, I would have loved to see Gallup vs King matchup on Sunday.

Sometimes we never know what could change the course of certain players in NFL draft with the teams that drafted them. Same with King, same with Taco.

can't hit on every pick. Our success rate is pretty high tho.

I was thinking King would have been a good 2nd round pick for us going into the draft. I thought GB reached for him a little bit at the time, but not by much.
Agreed. I wouldn't have liked him there any more than Taco, tbh.

I'd still bet that the Cowboys wanted to trade down, because there just wasn't a lot of first-round talent left at that spot. They probably graded Taco with the lowest floor - so safest - and went that route.

I liked King coming out of Washington, but knew he'd be a second rounder at best.

I really wanted Takk McKinley, and was miffed when Atlanta got him a few picks ahead of us.
Takk hasn't been all that good...hit and miss. Been hurt a lot too. So I think we did good.

and there's luck into the equation also.

- Cowboys supposedly wanted DE edge rushers Kevin Dodd and Emanuel Obdah (sp) with their pick at the top of the 2nd rd in 2016,..
Tennessee nabbed Dodd, ...while Browns nabbed Emanuel , both DEs gone so Cowboys followed out with their value board of drafting LB Jaylon Smith and his damaged knee with that 2nd round pick.
Dodd is not even in the NFL anymore.

- In the very same draft year (2016), Cowboys reportedly tried to trade up to select QB Paxton Lynch in the 1st round, but Denver beat them to it. ...and years later where is Lynch's career now ? JAG!
Reportedly after failing to acquire Lynch, Cowboys were prepared to draft QB Connor Cook but the Radas nabbed Cook, before Cowboys had that chance at him .. but where has Conner Cook's career in NFL went to ? Practice Squad ?

I think I tend to believe the report that the Cowboys so petrified that a much needed edge rusher on their value board was not going to be available with their 2nd round pick that they
decided to push that position more (reach?) in the 1st round instead.

CB was also a need but reportedly they thought the value was going to be available for CB more than edge rushers. and just like Taco, reportedly the Cowboys had a 2nd round grade
on King and Watt as well.

I think that Takk would have been the pick if Atlanta hadn't jumped ahead of us.

Ditto here as well. I really believe Takk would have been our pick ,,if not ATL.

ATL knew our intent and acted accordingly.
Maybe we're not doing enough to mislead and conceal our intentions as we've had teams from Philly to ATL trading up and jumping ahead of our supposed draft targets ?

I think that has proven to be the case at CB. Chido and Lewis have probably been just as good as King, definitely more durable.

We telegraphed the LVE and Hill picks. Surprised we were able to get both those guys.

That was the pick, but the Falcons leap frogged Dallas and took him.

IIRC The next pick on the board was King, but that draft was considered deep in DBs (they drafted Chido and Lewis on the 2nd and 3rd, X Woods and M White in later rounds) so they ended drafting Taco.

As Landry and Parcells said...Give them 3 years then cut as the Dolphins prefer Taco to Charles Harris their 2017 no.1 pick and Harris is still on the team (3 year rule)...
"Conversely, Taco Charlton joined the team off waivers two games ago. While he can’t obviously put up the quantitative numbers that Harris has they are not far off and that is really sad. For Harris.

Charlton has played two games and one of those, against Dallas, was not as a full-time player. He has registered eight tackles, five of which were solo, two tackles for losses, and three quarterback hits. In addition, he is one sack behind Harris with two. Two sacks in two games with the Dolphins."

our 2016 draft class may have been our best since the early 90's. Zeke,Dak, guys like Anthony Brown, Frazier..Jaylon Smith , Maliek Collins. THATS 6 starters right there, all from 1 single draft class. Frazier starts on special teams...so YES...6 starters.

What a great post. Our scouting dept deserves some credit on Prescott, but there was a significant amount of luck involved there.
