CB Kevin King (Packers) could've been our 1st round pick

Always felt wrong to me that we didn't tap into the Watt genetic-line to help our team. TJ has swiftly turned into one of the most consistent pass-rushers in the league. You couldn't have asked for a better late-1st project. Freak athlete. SPARQ score monster. Comes from an impeccable football family with high-integrity and a well-known work-ethic --everything Taco was not.

Probably the biggest, most head-scratching miss of the McClay era, although from what I've heard Taco was really who the head coach wanted & we deferred to him...

Ironically Packers CB Kevin King, who will miss Cowboys game, was strongly rumored to be among the candidates to be in final decision to be the Cowboys 1st round pick selection in 2017, along with Taco Charleton and TJ Watt.

But supposedly King's career has been so derailed by injuries, I heard he's missed 18 games in the last 3 years. That sounds like another injury plagued Mo Claiborne situation that we've seem to dodge.
and BTW, I would have loved to see Gallup vs King matchup on Sunday.

Sometimes we never know what could change the course of certain players in NFL draft with the teams that drafted them. Same with King, same with Taco.
Was so glad we didn't take King tho. He only moved up the draft board because of his combine workout. He was the 2nd best corner on his team (sidney jones). Never had to take on the best wrs on the opposing team. His career has been what I expected. I did not like taking Taco either. Carl Lawson was my pet cat that draft.

I think that Takk would have been the pick if Atlanta hadn't jumped ahead of us.

The FO said after that draft that they had Takk and Taco rated fairly close together, but that sounded like Taco was the second choice.

I thought McKinley was going to be the pick also. But the important thing is to have the kind of talent level we have now, but not then. We had to take a DL in that draft like we had to take an OG when we drafted Conner Williams. We finally have the talent level that they can pick the players that will be the best overall in a few years, and not worry about their rookie seasons.

I doubt it. They put alot of value in their interview process. No way he could hide the fact he wasn't all there. My guess would be that he was red flagged months before!

I just wonder how many were saying take/wish-list for Lawson before the draft ...and not hindsight after the draft.

The other way to look at it is we have to draft for need instead of potential because we refuse to be players in the top tier FA market. We get going out of business day 3 picked overs.

We telegraphed the LVE and Hill picks. Surprised we were able to get both those guys.

honestly I did not get any indication coming, per media hearsay, draft gurus projections, mock projections, etc. coming that DT Trystan Hill was going to be the pick, our very first in that draft.
I admit that I was really preparing the pick to be safety Juan Thornhill or Taylor Rapp. When it was announced it was Hill. I was only mildly surprised but I didn't have any problem with it being
a DT, and I fully trusted Wil McClay's judgment and work. (just as I did with tony pollard later on)

I heard the LVE " whispers " coming, but at the time it didn't seem like it was a certain of a 1st round, and although I had heard that the reports that the Cowboys really liked him a lot, but never processed
a vibe that he was going to be our 1st round draft pick.

I thought more of him (LVE) as a likelihood in the 2nd round. as names like DT Vita Vea, and safety Derwin James and eventually WR Calvin Ridley
(whom I believe was more fan/media driven than closer to any legit reports) although I do admit heartedly at the time of that 1st round , I was hoping for WR DJ Moore or Calvin Ridley.

@QuincyCarterEra knows I was all over him before the draft. My brother is an Auburn Alum so I tend to watch auburn a little bit more than I should. When Laremy Tunsil came out and said that was the hardest guy he's ever had to block it really got my attention. Then listening to stephen jones stating he would never take a DE unless his arms were a certain length made me want to go crazy. The only hesitation with Lawson was his injury history. I'm hoping the bengals keep misusing him as an olb and he's a free agent after 2020. That kid screams RDE.

Not sure if you follow the Draft Show, but Broaddus was saying those two were going to be the picks well before the drafts. I had never really heard him be that definitive about any other picks.

I remember there were very few, if any corners, drafted between that King pick and when we picked Chido. That gamble worked out pretty well. Just wish we got Watt instead of Taco.

We should have moved up and took Tredavious White or Takk

Watt was the logical pick and everybody here knew it. Rod and SJ and JJ and WM screwed it up.
must say, I wanted WATT badly too..but think about it, he was viewed as a 3-4 end or hybrid OLB. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think they saw him as a tweener or not a scheme fit. I say we should have drafted him because hes just a good football player..they over thought that one. Sometimes ya just get it wrong. Gil BRANDT got the Darrel Green pick wrong...instead, the skins got him...but at least we ended up with Doug Cosbie. Instead of drafting Montana, we drafted someone else...I forget who..someone help me on that lol..

I don't know why ppl assume TJ Watt would actually be really good on this defense. Yes he's a really good player on the steelers. I can pretty much guarantee he wouldn't have been utilized properly here and would still be stuck behind ty craw on the depth chart.

I never understood and still don't the hoopla over Kevin King. And now the dude can't stay on the field. He's definitely not someone people should be crying over that we didn't draft. I thought the other King from that draft, Desmond, was a much better prospect, and that's certainly been the case so far.

A 3-4 end is even bigger than a 4-3 end. They saw him as a linebacker but he is basically the same size as Randy Gregory. The Cowboys have gone long stretches without a single speed rusher on the defense with Gregory's suspension. I still believe that Taco was supposed to be an eventual D Law replacement but then D Law had his big season.

He easily could have been a pass rush specialist for us. Have Tyrone Crawford at right end on run downs like they been doing.

I was thinking King would have been a good 2nd round pick for us going into the draft. I thought GB reached for him a little bit at the time, but not by much.
I felt the same, it was really between Watts and Charlton, and Taco seemed to fit the mold better for our needs at the time.

Other than Earl Thomas (who was overpaid by a mile), what Free Agents are better than DLaw, Byron Jones, LVE, Jaylon, Frederick, Amari Cooper, etc?
