Broaddus: Trysten Hill played poorly

The play I posted has Joe Jackson at RDE and Hill at 3-tech next to him.

Jackson almost gets to the QB.

That’s great but what does this have to do with your assessment earlier about both DTs playing 3T and getting wrecked in the run game as a result?

The Jeff Cavanaugh clip is pretty straightforward and is what it is. 2 Rookie players that need time to develop and are liabilities in the run game.

We can’t assume that we are always going to blow out the opponent and make the game one dimensional. The 3 game losing streak is pretty clear about that because my eyes also see Robert Quinn as a liability in the run game too.

I’m not saying Hill is a failure but he isn’t rdy to play either. He looks about the same as he did in preseason and it wasn’t pretty.

I've watched that play over a dozen times and most everyone did OK. Except for Joe Jackson.

At first, I thought that the LBs were out of position, but they were in gap control. Smith COMMITTED to his gap by taking on the blocker that came off of Hill. LVE covered his gap, but stayed free to run to the ball.
The FS was providing deep coverage, so I didn't really expect him to charge in hard. If he does charge in with any consistency, the flea-flicker becomes a thing.
Both DTs were doubled and pushed around, but each occupied TWO OL and each clogged up one gap.
The last OL was on Hyder, so the ONLY DL that was NOT blocked by an OL was Jackson.
But Jackson was completely taken out of his gap and ridden out of the play by a TE. Fortunately, Sean Lee cleaned up Jackson's mess there.

It does look like Hill ended up on the ground, but this single clip isn't really clear about that. One of his draft weaknesses was that he is on the ground a lot.

Not enough here to say that Hill is a bust. He's definitely raw though.

Mainly, I'm disappointed in Jackson. The Draft Network said THIS about him: "Run Defense - Sets a firm edge, plays with extension and maintains outside leverage. Could stand to be more deliberate about squeezing down the b-gap. Dominates tight ends attempting to turn him out."
That simply did NOT happen.

WalterFootball said THIS and it seems to be more true, at least on this play:

"Jackson needs work in the ground game. He flashes the ability to hold his ground and stand up blocks, but there are too many plays on which he gets pushed out of his gap or knocked around. In run defense, Jackson is better when he works upfield and uses his speed to cause disruption in the backfield. He needs to get stronger in his lower body to hold his ground at the point of attack. With more development, Jackson has the potential to be a balanced defender who is a solid contributor against the run."

Thanks for taking the time to watch the play. I watched it over 10 times. Seems like few people even bothered to analyze the play and many would rather just rip Hill. Joe Jackson was pathetic on this play. Hill and Woods weren't much better but they were double teamed and like I said, I don't think the coaches had any of the Cowboy front 7 in a position to succeed on this play.

The original post shows both DT,'s get double teamed. We are leaving huge gaps so rb can jump to the next hole.

Both DTs are playing 3-tech in this video:

Jerry doesn't know squat about personnel. He is 100% reliant on Will and the coaching staff. He makes the final decisions but only after they educate him on the choices. This is basic stuff dude ...Cowboys 101.

If he were 100% reliant on these guys you mention then why was Floyd not picked?

You're just a fool with no logical capacity. Carry on, I'm done here.

Go read dude. You have a lot to learn. Start with googling the cowboys 2013 draft.

They are carrying 10 DL, they just picked up DT Justin Hamilton last week. While he likely isn't the answer, they'd have to cut one of these guys to get another. Or maybe cut 1 of the 7 WR they are currently carrying.
Cut Trysten Hill. Terrible pick that obviously has BUST written all over it.

This pick like Taco was not meant for immediate help from what I read on this board they were projects for a couple of years down the road.

A project is putting it mildly.

He’s so far off from being a legitimate NFL lineman. I have no freaking clue what they saw in this guy.

100%
He’s going to have to dramatically improve just to be a legit contributor.
At best, he becomes just that, at worst he’s a total bust. I don’t see his upside to be very high based on what we’ve seen so far

Seriously get Marinelli away from the War Room. What's the point of a scouting department if you're just going to pick some guy he gets a hard on for. First Taco now this guy.

Move Trysten Hill to the practice squad. No other team will pick him up. Use that roster spot to trade for an instant contributing DT.

Rod needs to go, like yesterday, but he's a former Marine and is a man with integrity. Try to show a little class and respect.

I can respect the man and still be critical of him. But his service isn’t a free pass either. I appreciate that and that he’s a good man but he needs to go.

I don't understand why you rotate the ENTIRE line at one time. Take our two guys for a couple plays, then take out two other and put the first two back in. This is idiocy. Marinelli (or whoever came up with this idea) really really needs to go.
