The Cowboys pass-rush is already better than you think

Its not about defending certain players. Its about seeing whats actually going on besides just seeing the stat line and drawing a conclusion. Both DE's are near the top if not very top of the league of getting double-teamed. But lets overlook those facts and just say they suck cause both arent at double-digit sacks yet.

Its the run defense that turns my stomach.

Exactly. I truly believe that the pass rush was already good and it got much better with Bennett. But adding Bennett does not really help with the run defense, which is this team's Achilles heel. I feel like it's a fundamental flaw in Marinelli's defensive scheme and I don't think any one player can fix that.

Just me but I think this D will fine going forward. Can't put my fingers on it but something happened with them during the Eagles game we hadn't seen all season. Like a light came on or they found the 2018 groove. Now add Bennett, I'd be very surprised if they aren't closer to the top 10 rankings after the next 4-5 games.

It's a great chess move by Dallas because they get to keep extra players in coverage while opponents are keeping extra players in protection. That right there tells a much better story than what those misleading team sack totals are, or Tank isn't playing at a high level as Quinn. One isn't good without the other, period.

It's not translating to good defense though.

Ok we are forcing them to max protect more, but if that's the case why aren't we stopping teams from consistently moving down the field.

We are (or were prior to the Eagles game) last in the league in drive start position, if we are so awesome on the rush that we force extra bodies to defend the pass, then why aren't we stopping teams.

I mean let's see what kind of offense we have if we give them a short field every once in awhile.

I have an idea, why don't we try a double A gap blitz with our super speed demon LBers once in awhile? I know why, because we have to have one of them chasing a receiver 30 yards downfield for some reason.

How about just trying to properly time a blitz, just once, rather than every single person in a 100,000 seat stadium knowing 'it's coming', a blitz that invariably is easily picked up by a back, or long since checked out of by the QB going to a hot read.

Huh, just once.

Tank and Quinn are seeing some of the most double teams in the NFL between 27% and 29% of the time. Yet, they are winning at an equally high rate between 24% and 33% of the time.

What does this mean? It means our Boys are forcing opponents to keep extra players in to protect the passer, and the opponents are still getting beat. Better yet, it’s allowing the Boys to mount an effective pass rush without dedicating too many extra players in the blitz.

If we get get the consistent pressure up the middle that this scheme calls for, I think fans would start seeing the results they are expecting. Hopefully, Bennett can provide that, at least on passing downs.

I wouldn't call a pass rush that can go from top 5 at best to top 30 at best a "good" pass rush. They have the PLAYERS for a good pass rush, but they don't have the scheme or the will of a good pass rush

This! Well we made Sam D. look like Dan Marino and since then he look worse than Ryan Leaf.

The Dallas Cowboys bolstered their pass rush when they traded for Michael Bennett this past week but the reality is it was already pretty darn good.
We expected more of the Dallas Cowboys pass-rush this season, didn’t we? With 17 team sacks through the first seven weeks of the 2019 NFL season, they are tied with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans for 17th in the NFL.

For a unit that boasts DeMarcus Lawrence, Robert Quinn, and a pretty formidable supporting cast, finishing anywhere outside of the top-10 seems like a failure, by most fans’ standards. But even though they are on pace for no more than 39 (last season’s total), they are really having a better pass-rushing season than the numbers indicate.

Lawrence's surgery and long lay off took a while to recover from. He looked back in form against the Eagles. Quinn missed the first 2, but has been killing it since. Adding in Bennett fills the hole we had for pass rushing DT.

We've now got a starting nickel dline with quality across the board, and two very good DEs. We should be significantly better through the back half of the season.

Also likely means our DTs weren't commanding much attention. With Collins the only capable pass rusher at DT, that isn't surprising.

The addition of Bennett is a big deal. We only had one decent nickel DT. That was our biggest hole on defense. Now we've plugged that hole with a high quality player, not just a passable player.

My definition of 'better than you think' is much different.

Quinn's destroying, Collins is creating pressure, D-Law is getting healthier, Jaylon is a monster blitzer... I think the Cowboys pass rush is pretty good.

The problem is IMO that it's simply harder to get sacks in general. D-Law had the fastest sack in Week 7 at 2.6 seconds to strip Carson Wentz. With all the pick plays and OPI allowed to give receivers separation, it's no trouble to get a receiver open in 2 and a half seconds, faster than any NFL pass rusher can get to the QB. Some plays like what New England runs can get the ball out of the QB's hand in under 2 seconds. It's simply impossible to generate pressure that fast. So the Cowboys are doing what they can with what they have, but the league is so slanted against defense that pass rushing is increasingly becoming a losing bet.

Interestingly, the Patriots are also working around this with their constant spamming of the zero blitz. It's pretty much guaranteed to bring one rusher coming either free or chipped, and while it can be beat by a fast throw like what the Patriots run, Belichick is basically forcing the QB he's blitzing to process at Tom Brady speed.
