I'll go back to Deion Sanders. He was always just a paid mercenary to me, even though I was glad to have him. But I can't say I ever viewed him as a true Cowboy.
I get that. To me, as great as Deion and Haley were, I'm not convinced that players who spent less than half their careers with Dallas, and who are as identifiable with another team as they are with Dallas should be in the Ring of Honor.

Nowadays, I really don't think about it anymore because it is just a product of free agency being the way that it is. In the infancy of the salary cap, it was more difficult to swallow. Sure, players ended up changing teams before that, but it really was the start of mentality of playing for the "highest bidder."

It does take some of the shine off it. I'm not sure why Haley bothers me less than Neon Deion. I guess it is because we acquired Haley in a trade while Prime Time just bounced around to whoever would pay him the most. I'm not knocking him for that, just saying it makes me feel like he was only a hired gun.

You are right about Deion being a mercenary, so I get why he may bother you more. I don't really view Haley that way, but I don't like that he built his career success as much on his time with the 49ers as with Dallas.

Seeing Bennett in a Cowboys uniform is going to be weird.

With free agency as it is, who has been signed that never looked right to you wearing the star?

My candidates are Randall Cunningham and Eddie George.

I second Cunningham, that was just strange seeing him back up and play in games for us after torching us a few years.

My top 5 are

1. Cunningham - will always be a eGirl
2. Mr. Thats My Quarterback - with the crap on the star and then with EGirls... that took some getting used too.
3. Haley - He was Mr 49er to me.
4. SheShawn - oops mr Johnson i mean, completely ruined #19 for me until last year.
5. Drew Bledsoe - another weird one for me watching him in Superbowl with NE and then being here. I always wondered why he never did better here. Guy could sling it.

It was a long time ago, but Herb Adderly. He was Mr. Packer, but he helped us win Super Bowl 6. Same thing with Lance Alworth, who was Mr. Chargers.

That was probably the strangest one. He had been such a thorn in the Cowboys side for so long it was weird seeing him on our side.

 If Haley never built that success with the 49ers he probably never would've been here. I can't imagine those 90's teams without him.

Of course, if Deion hadn't built the success he did with other teams he wouldn't have been in Dallas either. In any case, they were both important, so I get why people feel they belong in the ROH. I just prefer ROH guys to have dramatically more success, and spend significantly more time with Dallas than with other teams.

This right here is how I see it.

he’s definitely strong and definitely a character but I wouldn’t put both those words together to describe him
I don't mean strong character like a guy you can count on to do the right thing. I mean strong character like the mean spirited I don't give a dang type. The Charles Haley / Jason Hatcher type.

Jerry was mad after some Deion Sanders. That was ALL Jerry. Jimmy Johnson wouldn't have signed Deion. Deion was a great player, but he brought a culture that was detrimental to this team over the long run. I remember Aikman talking about it. Deion was a slacker, but he was so SUPREMELY talented that he could get away with it. But the other corners would try to emulate him, though they didn't have 50 percent the talent Deion did.
But Jerry wanted Deion because Jerry was DETERMINED to win a Super Bowl without Jimmy Johnson. So when Barry Switzer took the job, Jerry knew he would have no blow back from Barry for wooing Deion to the Cowboys.
I'm convinced had Jimmy Johnson stayed we wouldn't have loss to the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship game. Johnson and Turner knew how to scheme against Deion.

I don't know that Randall Cunningham ever had money issues. I do recall him starting up a construction business, but not because he was on the verge of going bankrupt or anything.
I could have swore he did not want to re-sign with Dallas unless it was low level starter money. IIRC he said he really did not like the construction work.
