Shooting ourselves in the foot

I can't think of a team that shoots themselves in the foot more than this one. This team has one of the best rosters in the league and have lost games by 1 possession in 2 of their 3 losses.

Too many costly penalties, and too many drops and turnovers in crucial situations.
Examples: Michael Gallup or Randall Cobb drop crucial passes when there isn't even anyone on them to prevent them from making the catch.
Holding calls after we make big, big third down plays or even TD's. I could go on with this.

This team isn't "outmatched" by any team in the league. They don't get beat because the opposing team is superior, they get beat/make games closer than they should be because they shoot themselves in the feet every game.

Example: Teams like the Bengals and Dolphins are outmatched. They simply don't have the talent to beat better teams.
Dallas doesn't have that problem.
Why is it that this team always shoots themselves in the foot? I know Garrett is an obvious reason, but the team and the players themselves have to realize this problem and at least try to stop it, right? Can and will this problem be fixed...?

You get the sense a lot of our fans don’t watch too many other NFL teams play sometimes. A lot of the time.
I don't think there are teams with Dallas' talent that do it but, yea, it's rampant through the league.

Dallas loses b/c they shoot themselves in the foot. Teams like Tampa would probably lose anyway.

Garrett is the HC and ultimately the blame falls there, but he wasn't playing LT and getting multiple holding penalties last night. Nor was he playing WR and dropping/fumbling balls. The players have to be accountable and it absolutely can be fixed. You can't exactly bench Tyron for having holding penalties, because we've seen what happens when he isn't in there. It is more about attention to detail, focusing and doing your job on every play.

Did garrett make any coaching blunders last night? It seemed to players making mistakes. Did belicheck not prepare his team for the ravens ?

We went on the road and beat a division rival by double digit points. The Vikings will be a good test of who we are in the season.

The Cowboys should have beaten the Packers but they spent the entire first half pointing guns at their own feet. Looking at the schedule remaining, there is no one the Cowboys cannot beat if they play as hard as they did against the Eagles and in the 2nd half against the Giants. But the problem with this team has been preparation and discipline. Every game, every season its the same dumb stuff. Last night La'el Collins got called for not lining up on the LOS! Dumb stuff like that hurts.

Our mega-talented roster has been undefeated for the last decade.

Every loss has been the fault of the coaches.

If it ever looks like a player isn’t playing well you can always tie it back to a coach that didn’t prepare them properly.

Cowboys are Top 10 in penalties per game. So yeah, I think we tend to shoot ourselves in the foot quite a bit.

“Cant think of steam that shoots itself in the foot more than this one” and “top 10 in penalties per game” are not the same thing. So if that’s your basis for agreeing with OP, you may want to rethink it.

Idk why people say this. The Vikings aren't good either.

The only difference between the Vikes and Giants is that if Dallas plays stupid, sloppy football, they might not be able to overcome it. Play clean, and Dalllas rolls over them.

we made it to the half way point 5-3. This time last year we where 3-5. We are leading our division as well. I wish we can play like we did against the Eagles Every week but we know that won't be the case. Our next six games will determine our true identity and our standings the rest of the season honestly. Vikings, Lions, Patriots, and Bills is BRUTAL! Not to mention at CHI in December and The Rams. We have the identity and recipe to compete with anyone. Ball control, Time of possession, Defense. It just depends on which DAL team shows up. The one against the Eagles or Jets? These next six games will determine that.

No it's a more general comment that this team does, in fact, really screw itself at times. They are not a very disciplined team.

Hey it’s OK ...... our kicker misses one every game so there’s no accountability.

All teams do. That’s like saying this team really tends to wear cleats.

We play a lot of prime time games. Penalties get called in prime time games. We’re in the top 3rd of the league in penalties. Ok.

If we were talking about taking care of and taking away the ball, and not trying to be dramatic pretending we’re the only team in the league with ball control issues, I’d agree. That’s a real issue that’s costing us games.

First of all, all teams do make mistakes. But some teams do it more than other teams. It's idiotic to argue otherwise. For this Cowboys team, yes, they make more mistakes in games, in terms of penalties than most teams in the league. That's just a fact. You can try to spin it anyway you want but the fact is this team commits a lot of penalties and isn't a very disciplined team.

To then try to write this off as an anomaly because we play a lot of prime time games is weird. Got a stat that backs up that claim? That more penalties are called in prime time games than other games?

I’m not spinning anything at all. The standard you’re defending is “can’t think of steam that does it more.” And you’re defending it by saying we’re above average at it and pretending I’m the one spinning something. It was an overreach. It’s ok to just admit it and stop defending it. Really.

Actually I very clearly stated I am not defending that specific comment that no team commits more penalties than we do. I clearly said my response to you was a general comment that we are not a very disciplined team.

We do commit a lot of penalties and actual data backs this up. We are a Top 10 team in terms of penalties per game and according to the poster above, we are 2nd in the league in penalty yardage. Teams that commit a lot of penalties aren't very disciplined teams.

I am struggling with your continual denial of these pretty basic concepts.

And I will ask again. Can you back your claim that our penalties and penalty yardage is influenced by prime time game action?

So it sounds like we’re in complete agreement you probably shouldn’t have disagreed with my post which you quoted in the first place.

You can stop trying to get me to take the bait when you pretend I’d said above things which I clearly did not say because it’s the only way you can pivot the point of your first reply. I’m not going to fall for that.
