Would you sacrifice Byron Jones for Quinn or Bennett

Amari will be seeking elite WR money and Dak’s contract will exceed 30+ million per, I don’t see Byron Jones coming back. With all the big contracts we’ve handed out and with two more big contracts to come we can’t keep everyone. Jones is a solid cover guy but doesn’t get takeaways so I won’t see him as a great loss.

Its never an either or situation. Who else is available at DE? Will Randy Gregory be back?

Byron does not get a lot of interceptions because he is not targeted as much, like Awuzie. But Jones can take a top WR and pretty much keep him from destroying the Cowboys. As long as the Cowboys do not have that impact safety controlling the secondary they need a guy like Jones. Quinn is a nice player and Bennett brings effort to the defense. But do these guys even want to stay in Dallas?

Byron Jones is going to get a lot of offers in free agency. He knows it and Dallas knows it. I think he leaves and it would not surprise me to see him with the Giants or Eagles, most likely the Giants.

I know this is a cop out but I need to see where they are after these 6 games. I don’t feel good about where we are going to be after this stretch. If we win half of them that would exceed my new expectations. At that point I would evaluate which side of the ball is the bigger liability and prioritize the side that helps us more.

My first priority is Cooper and draft Jaylen Reagor. I know he isn’t a household name but he is crazy good at TCU with sub par QBs.

Dak dropped some dimes last night but it really bothers me that he still has problems hitting receivers in stride. I would be really careful how much money he gets and how his contract is structured.

It'll be interesting to see how much money Quinn and Bennett both want. Quinn's sack numbers say megabucks, his age and injury history both say short term deal. We'll see how that all works out, but I doubt we retain him.

Bennett's contract with the Eagles (rolled over to the Pats, rolled over to us...) was 2 years $16M. Let's say he wants that same deal again after this season. I'd say he's worth that money while he's playing, but his combo of possible decline + dickishness makes it kind of risky.

And to be honest, I think Byron's gone either way. 30% of our cap in our OL + Dak getting megabucks + Coop getting megabucks + DLaw making $20M a season... where's the money at to pay him? Maybe adding a contract like Bennet's will be manageable, but 4-5 years at probably $15M per for Byron? I don't think we have that kind of cash.
Quinn will be interesting.

Big stats this year but reality is he has had 2 season derailed by injuries, had a recent suspension, and will going into his 10th NFL season (that's alot of wear and tear). Most teams will probably offer him a 3 year deal with 2 years guaranteed.

Crazy thing is even with the wear and tear + injury history Quinn will still probably land similar yearly salary as Bryon due to the increase value/market of a quality DE

I'm guessing a three-year deal averaging $10M would get either one signed long-term. We're are probably looking at a $13-15M range for Byron but he's younger.

Here's a crazy thought though..what if Byron doesn't demand top CB money? What if he shoots for a team friendly-ish deal because he's an RKG or whatever, and understands top dollar would mean he plays elsewhere?

I'd like to think that there are people in the NFL that would sacrifice a percentage for a higher chance at dominance with one team.

A good DL that can create pressure can cover an average CB.

A great cover corner cannot lockdown a receiver if the QB has all day to sit in the pocket. The receiver will eventually get open.

DL is more important imo.

this makes my brain bleed.

CBZ: we need good CBs, we have no good CBs.

we get a good CB.

CBZ: we need to trade our good CB, seriously, we need to keep more DEs over CBs.

My neighbor asked me this last night and I honestly couldn't answer. Too early to make a call on either one but let's say both ends the season with double-digit sacks, then what. I'm guessing a three-year deal averaging $10M would get either one signed long-term. We're are probably looking at a $13-15M range for Byron but he's younger. Just think it may be a bit easier to draft his replacement or impact of his position vs trying to find a DE with the impact you get from Bennett or Quinn....plus they would be cheaper.

If I had the opportunity to sign Quinn and Bennett long-term and that meant letting Jones go, it would be an easy decision to say goodbye and look for CB in the draft.

If we knew Quinn could play at this level for another 2-3 years then it’s a no brainer but this staff loves Byron...

The problem is, there's absolutely no guarantee even a 1st or 2nd round pick is going to be anything other than completely mediocre. Especially in the late part of the rounds.

The Pat's took secondary high for years. They still end up trading 1s for proven CBs like Gilmore.

A #1 CB is just incredibly important in the new NFL. And that also frees up a premium pick to use on another position, like DT or a blue chip S.

That being said, people usually equate this binary position of either/or because they aren't very familiar with the cap. It wouldn't surprise me at all to keep both. Quinn will be 30 and has a good place here, he's basically the perfect vet for us to keep. 3 year deal structured appropriately and we won't really have a problem keeping him. Especially if they release Crawford.

Dak, Amari, Quinn, and Byron will likely all get signed. If we draft a CB it'll be to replace Awuzie after next year. Hopefully we can extend Lewis.

If Bennett performs, he'll probably be back too. And he's going to be 34 in like a week or two. Cheap.

Bennett is trash. I bet he's not even on our team by the end of the year... problem solved.

I want all 3 dang it.
I'd hate to lose Byron Jones after all this.
Quinn is EXACTLY what we need opposite DLaw.
Bennett is old school....helps having a guy like that when it starts to get cold.
I'd like to keep both 31 and 58.

Cut Crawford and give his former cap hit, with some extra helpings to Quinn.
THIS!!! As well as Quinn is playing, he needs to be a top priority. Crawford's salary probably covers two-thirds of what Quinn will want.
I'd consider a short-term extension for Bennett after the season if he plays like he did last night.
Not gung-ho on keeping Byron if it means sacrificing the front four talent, either.

I’m not paying Byron Jones. He’s a goodish player, but Quinn makes way more of an impact. Of course more goes into it. It also depends on what contract each is asking for.

The drafting philosophy of this team is to allow the expensive DB's to walk and replenish via the draft. If your line is fearsome, the DB's don't need to be all-pros. Pass rush improves pass defense.
