PFF ratings don't tell you much more than tackles.

Yes they do. Knowledge football guys grading every player...every play. We fans don't do anything close to that and yet jump headfirst into our dogmatic opinions.

Of course PFF is flawed...but flawed less than the guy, beer in hand, watching a game.

I WAS WRONG.

There. When they drafted him, I thought it may have been too big a risk at that spot and hoped they could have drafted Myles Jack.

Now... yeah I was totally wrong. Oh me of little faith. Jaylon is everything we could ever want in a LB. I think he's helped make LVE a better player AND their presence has given Sean Lee a chance to get healthy & get back to his top form too.

Multiple people grading the same game and filling out an opinion poll is what it is. And we as fans watch every game and can form our own opinions.

There were several negative threads about Jaylon’s play earlier in the season but his play has really picked up the last few games.

Imagine having to log in to some stat geek website to formulate your opinion on players.

Good news! Jaylon Smith's PFF score is going up! Cowboys!!

Along the same lines, my favorite is during draft time when people start posting competing “scouting reports” on players, as if they can’t formulate an opinion themselves.

Players come and go over the years and some you remember and some become distant parts of your memory. Jaylon will be a player I will remember for years to come. Never seen a player have so much heart and intensity. There is no questioning the kids strong mentality and love for the game. I believe that spills over into his play. He should be an inspiration to many.

I know he is to me. Quick story on how he inspired me. Saw a bunch of hawgs (rooters, not fat girls ... fat girls are fine tho) out in the field. Well, I leveled my AR 15 on a fence post and I popped one for sure, winged another purty good and they high tailed it out the back of the pasture. I thought I knew where they was going so I got my fat arse into gear and was cuttin out thru the woods to head the vermin off to attempt to cut a couple more down and damn if I didn't lumber into a stump hole. And hell, I was doin ever bit of 5-6 mph and blam/wham went to my knee into the hole and busted my arse. Well I layed there, mouth full of leaves and dirt, damn dog lookin at me like "what the hell?". I rolled around there on the ground, leg felt like it'd been run over by a hemi-cuda doin a burnout. Tried to get up and went down and flopped around like fish on the bank. Thought this could be it.

Then it hit me. I thought, WTH Bob (I'm Bob, y'all) , why you pussin out like this. Jaylon had his whole damn leg ripped off and Doctor Dan put it back on , hooked up all the parts bionically and now he's faster, better, stronger than before. I continued to think to myself ... git your big fat arse up and be a man about this (by this time that damn dog was lickin me in the face and I hate that crap worse than Lucy). I pulled myself up, remembering Jaylon meeting Saquon in the hole at the 4 yard line, my knee started bending, I was weight bearing, and then I was limping back to the house. Remembering Smith's overcoming drive inspired me ... along with the promise of that 5th of Makers Mark in the cabinet.

Thanks Jaylon ... you da man !!!!

Pure tackle counts don't always tell you a lot. LB's are going to have more tackles. It's often a question of where the tackle is taking place. Is it after a 10 yard gain?

His PFF was bad to start the season, but has been on the rise. Now sits at 67.9.

He's been playing well the past month.
He ain’t perfect. But damn, dude is playing well this last couple games. Defenses either grow this time of season or shrink. I think we began our journey vs the Iggles, and with the Bennett addition just added to it to an extent.

I fully expect we continue to rise from here on out! I look for #54, #55, and #50 to play so much better!

@T-RO said it well above; LBs are always going to rack up tackles.

In addition, the scorers often tend to credit tackles to the LB when the play's not otherwise clear. Say Saquon Barkley takes a 3rd and 1 dive and goes down in a scrum of jerseys at the first down line. You can't really break down who made that tackle without a Zapruder film-esque frame by frame analysis, and truth be told, there were probably 2 or 3 guys who were all grabbing them. So to keep it simple, If the scorer sees Jaylon hitting the hole and heading towards Barkey, Jaylon's probably getting that stat. Some booths are worse about this than others, I remember that Buffalo's scorers are notorious for this.

cool so that would apply to all lbs and even out. So awesome

Yeah, I think they are really starting to come together on defense. Last year, it took several games for them to start really playing well. They actually hit their stride vs. New Orleans in 2018, and then pretty much was a top defense after that.

It looks like they are starting to finally gel as a unit now, and really beginning to cause offenses problems. Like you mentioned, Bennett is really going to fit in well and will give a huge boost to the DL. Him along with Quinn, Collins, and a (finally) healthy Lawrence is going to tear it up this last half of the season.

It really shouldn’t surprise us too much that it took a few games to start playing very well. Like I said, it took a while last year too. They’re still a young group pretty much, and they need to grow together.

I truly expect them to be much better in this last half of the season than they were in the first half. Bennett is going to be a huge boost. I’m looking forward to watching the D.

Wonder if Jaylon and LVEs bad games coincided with Hill getting playing time

Jaylon is on pace for 136 tackles 5 sacks and 4 Forced fumbles. There is no doubt he is a force.

The best thing that happened to this defense was the success of their blitzes. I have been the paragon for this defense for almost three years, saying it was built to attack downhill, not react. They're finally sending the four horses and, while it's not always perfect, damn is it fun to watch and successful. My prayer is that Garrett keeps his damn hands off and they keep sending the men.
