One thing about Austin is he runs it when he can, he may not get many yards, but he still runs when he is able to. On this play he was calling for a fair catch way before the norm. JG is trying to cover his ***, and needs to go ASAP.

He could of had a monster return and left what.. 13 seconds left with a chance to score.
Throwing a 3 yard out route to Blake Jarwin put us in a better position to win than a potential punt return for a TD.

Worst part of that stupidity is they run three short outs to gain a total of nine yards. Meanwhile they probably could have gotten fifteen or more in less time with Tavon who is on the roster to make plays in the return game.
And who would you blame if he ran it and we were pushed back further by the almost obligatory return penalty in the NFL, while also losing the time off the clock. We were already down in the 30’s right?

By watching the NFL and listening to announcers. It’s a league wide strategy unless you have Deon or Hester. Games come down to final possessions every week, and you’ll see punts are almost always fair caught, as are kickoffs that are pooched at the end of games. Returns across the league seldom avg. 7 yards while collecting penalties almost every time. Coaches figure they can pick up 10 yards in 3-4 seconds on offense.

Except the return was set up nicely and wasted

They also could have went for a block but didn’t. And then wasted the set up return by just calling for a fair catch.

Here's what Garrett said …

“You lay out the situation: let’s not waste a lot of time. If you don’t have a real good opportunity here to go make a return directly north and south, don’t waste a lot of time. In that situation, the way he saw it, he went ahead and made the fair catch and gave us the opportunity around midfield.

Nothing about kicking puppies and drowning kittens? Are you sure you have the right quote?

They could have learned to take a risk and let Austin return the ball after playing it safe by running the ball 2 times in a row failed. They could have gotten themselves off of the hot seat with a big Austin return, yet choose to play it safe again. Elite coaches know when it play it safe or when to take the risk. Garrett never knows the correct plays to call and the right decisions to make in big games that are on the line.

But you make the decision about FC or burn the time off before the play, not when you see the coverage. 19 times out of 20 you just burn time off the clock, its not a brain dead decision at the time its made even if it turns out to be a disaster.

Not sure what was said... but if you watch the video of it from the endzone, you can see JG's reaction to it. He put his hands on his knees and Richard just threw his hands up.

I've seen the still shot of Garrett bent with his hands on his knees - it looked like he was upset over Austin not running. But that's just an impression from a still shot, and the video would be a better judge. Do you have the video to post?

So you are saying JG lied when he said he didn't tell Austin to FC the ball, then I agree.

Bad coaching is one thing we have had to deal with for year with this candy ... idiot, now lying and throwing other players and coaches under the bus.

According to Jeff Cavanaugh on 103.5 the fan. Tavon Austin told him “I did what I was told to do” on the punt return......

Garret is trying to cover his pale ginger behind.

They also said on the 3rd and 2 play, that all of the receivers were blocking yet Garrett said there was a pass option on the play and Dak had a choice.

What a narcissistic coach. Every thing that goes wrong is because of everyone else but you. Imagine blaming your OC, QB, and WR/Punt returner all in one day.

Trifecta.

Fraud HC, 10 years later is still Fraud HC.
