Williams needed to do more than chip, he needed to block until Frederick could fully engage. Play was moving to the left and Frederick was to the right. He's got no angle to cut off the defender.

His assignment was to chip and go to the next level.
Personally, I would've had him block down and have
Frederick pull to block the LB.

Either way, it was a very weak chip by Williams.
He left Frederick hanging on a tough reach block.
He won't be missed while he's out.

And then on this day God said let there be lanes for Zeke. We will see our run game take off every week Williams is out.

Sounds like an arthroscopic knee cleanup is in the works for Connor Williams.

It's really not a big deal. In 3 weeks or so, he should return to the playing field.

Whether of not that's actually a good thing remains to be seen. Give him time.

Take your time big dummy.

This picture tells me the mistake was Frederick's on this play. If Frederick gets over quicker and pushes the tackle outside, there is a big hole for Zeke with William in front of him to take out the LB. The slot receiver is cutting outside and will take the DB with him. Zeke could have gotten the 1st down easily and probably would have scored. I think Zeke saw the DT get loose and started heading outside but at the point the DE and DT both converged on him. Just a bad time for Frederick and Williams to mess up. It also shows even if Dak had kept the ball he had nowhere to run and no time to throw unless the ST followed Zeke.

Disagree. C-Will needed to clip the defender a bit longer there before going upfield to the second level. He barely grazed him. You cannot get sloppy there on short yardage. All we need was 2 yards, secure the first block.

Thanks for posting this video. Its shows a few things pretty clearly. First, Zeke was headed right where Williams vacated. That was where the run was intended to go. When Zeke saw the DT coming free he cut outside but the DE also broke free of Tyron Smith's block. It looks like Williams was supposed to give more of a chip on that tackle than he did. This is where Williams strength fails him. He needed to shove the DT into Frederick so Frederick can pick him up. The receivers run off the DBs and Williams gets the LB way out of the hole. It could also be the Frederick messed up. He should have taken the DT outside which is where his rush had him going. It seems like Frederick was indecisive about how to block him. In any case, it was a TD if they get that guy blocked.

I am not saying it was the right play call because there was no running room all game, but it was close to working and if it had no one would complain about the call. If Zeke goes in there the Cowboys win.

Connor Williams will have surgery on his knee Tuesday but the hope is he will be able to return after a few weeks. Xavier Su'a-Filo will likely move into the left guard role, which is how the Cowboys handled Williams' absence last year because of a knee scope.

i like Xavier!

Sua-Filo is a streaky player. Very good for several plays then completely whiffs Chaz Green style.

At least we know he is OK based on his play last season.

I have no real issues in the run game with Sua-Filo. He is some what limited in that he can't get to the second level and you won't see any pulling etc. but he is a good run blocking Guard, more of a RG traditionally, to be honest. But in the passing game, I have real concerns there. He's the kind of player that gets your QB onto the IR. He will completely miss an assignment and allow a free run at your QB. I agree with you.

And our offense especially our running game will be better..

Only through injuries does our team put the best players on the field. This favoritism system is trash.

Like why the hell is Witten on the field.

Texas Longhorn. Plays soft and prone to injury.

Almost all there recent offensive drafts are both soft and injury prone (Jordan Shipley, Swaim, Connor Williams, D'onta Foreman).

May I add Colt McCoy to that lineup?

And let's not even get into headcases such as Cedric Benson (R.I.P), Vince Young and Ricky Williams.

travis Frederick got beaten like a rented mule on this run. It’s sad this run could have been successful if he got his hands on his man
Jstopper, go and watch this play develop, this is on fredbeard buddy, this is ALL on Williams running out to block a damn LB who WASN'T blitzing....CW let him go, and fred was NOT in position to do anything but grab the guy and get a holding call... I say hats off to fredbeard on this one buddy for NOT holding but allowing this thing to just blow up.. -10 yds would have really put us in a hole.

Xavier is finally going to steal Williams job for good. The guy is in great physical shape, and focused too.
