Here’s a blatantly obvious “must fix” for this team: GETTING OFF TO A BETTER START, as opposed to falling behind double digits before seemingly waking up. What evidence do we have of the need for a faster start?

Well, the great Bob Sturm wrote an article this week in THE ATHLETIC called “The Morning After: After Ominous Cowboys Loss, Familiar Feelings of Mediocrity Creep In”. (I would link it but it’s a paid site) Sturm points out in the article how bad this team’s starts have been in their four losses, especially against good teams, and how this bad habit of needing to rally from behind every game is killing this team.
  • The Saints jumped out to a halftime lead of 9-3
  • The Packers jumped on them for a 31-3 lead
  • The Jets amazingly were up 21-3 late in the first half
  • The Vikings had a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter
Adding up those cumulative scores in those games created an opponent lead of 75-9 before the Cowboys’ could finally wake up and rally. Wow. 75-9. Even with a Cowboys rally, they lost all four of those games.

If this team is ever going to turn this thing around, one simple fix for them is to stop with the horrible starts. Looking unprepared out of the gate is not a sign of a team that’s going anywhere. Let’s hope that is fixed soon or 2019 will become another wasted season.

I wonder how this compares with other years.

Hard to recover when you're down in the well right outta the chute. We can get away with it against lesser teams, but it's dang near impossible to overcome against good ones.

Gotta be better prepared from the git go. These Cowboys have to get punched a few times before they start fighting back.

Another wasted season is more then likely with The Red Bush at the helm. I hope not but I have to prepare myself mentally for the let down every year.

Jerry Letdown- will be 24 after this season.

It’s almost like watching a drunk fool with a ton of chips at a Vegas craps table. He keeps rolling the dice over and over and over, hoping that maybe on roll 25, he gets lucky. And then expects “credit” for doing it. It’s pathetic.

Slow starts are mostly on the coaching scheme and play calling along with execution and opposing strategies.
Every team in a 16 game season will have a slow start. But this team does it almost every week. Even in their wins against poor teams they often fell behind. In both games against the giants they fell behind, the deadskins scored first in that game, Only in the wins against Mia and Filly did we score first.

Correct

It’s a continuing Saga for our offense. One with our offensive strength in running the ball which often forces us to change our scheme in order to come back. And places our defense more vulnerable. It’s not a winning formula for this team.

This is just quality coaching. Clearly someone elses fault, not Garrett's. Another amazing stat to add to the old resume.

Although I can’t quote exact source, I remember reading 2-3 years ago that the team who scores first in the NFL has nearly a 60% chance of winning. If a team has a two score lead by the second quarter, the % of that team winning goes up over 75%.

Obviously a two score deficit in the NFL is a hard obstacle to overcome.

This stat shows how prepared the team starts the game, thus the coaching effect. If we had an owner who cared about the team, this situation would be questioned. Since we do not, Garrett is easily finding excuses or throwing others under the bus when he is deprived of an original excuse.

They got away with what should've been a pick 6 Sunday night. That number should be 82.

Lost to the Saints without Brees, the Packers without Adams, the Vikings without Thielan. Looking good.

While I agree and stated coaching scheme and play calling was a major factor execution and opposing strategies also played a part. Meaning our talent doesn’t always have their sharpest performance from the onset. An Int on our first play last week is a great example.

I'd like to know if they script the first 15 plays.

Against the Vikes that was the first 2 drives, after which the play calling, particularly on first down, really opened up.

On the first two drives, every first down was a Zeke run. 5 of 5.

There are two types of offensive philosophies with coaches, punch or counter punch. Garrett has always been a counter puncher and was trained that way by Norv Turner. The difference is Turner had a great OL, balanced O between the pass and run but best of all, a D with wouldn't let the other team get away before he could figure out how they wanted to defend his offense. Part of that slow start is because this D is mediocre and inconsistent.

Add to this an inexperienced OC that's feeling his way along in the beginning of the game because every DC is going to throw something new at him to try and confuse him and they're all going to try and stop him from doing what he needs and wants to do, establish the run game.

How many times did you hear that phrase for Romo "taking what the defense gives us"? Meaning we don't have enough confidence in our offensive coaches or players to take what we want.

Did Bill Walsh take what the defense was giving him? Did he let the DC dictate his play calling? He realized the first fighter to throw the punch and draw blood had the best chance of winning the fight. It was an attitude he wanted to instill in his offense and he created one of the most confident and effective offenses in NFL history.

And you cannot examine these slow starts without considering execution and mistakes that alter the strategy. The talent on this team is overvalued and that includes this offense. They give most of the plays at TE to a drive extender, not a play maker. If Elliott's not hitting the hole, there is another option.

I'll never understand these slow-starts.
which is another reason to start the game in hurry-up.
