The Football Outsiders DVOA rankings are out. Dallas slipped from #4 to #5 overall, #6 in weighted DVOA, which counts recent games more heavily. The top teams are BAL, NE, SF, KC, NO and DAL.

The offense fell from #1 to #2, behind Baltimore. Hard to argue with that.
The defense is #19, which, sure, sounds about right. Pretty good at keeping other teams out of the end zone, terrible at taking the ball away.
After the debacle in NE, special teams dropped to #32, worst in the league, and it's not particularly close. Our ST's DVOA is -4.0%; next-worst is -3.1% and third-worst is -2.8%. Just horrendous.

We're actually average in FG/XP (16th), kickoffs (18th) and punt returns (19th). We're horrible at kickoff returns (almost twice as bad as the second-worst team) and punts (third-worst); blocks and allowing long returns will do that to you.

Fun Fact. Did you know Bill Belichek was a 2 time SB winning Special Teams coach and defensive assistant. Hence his team's value in both of those areas.

  • Opponents have 403 more yds in kick returns than we do.
  • Cowboys are averaging a historically bad 12.5yds per kick return. By far worst in the NFL. Next closest is 17.9yds by Steelers. Most teams are above 20yds per return. Just wow...
  • We are 24th in kick return yds allowed at 24.8.
  • Cowboys are dead last in punt avg 41.8.
  • We are ranked 29th in yds per punt return allowed at 10.0
  • 27th in yds per punt return 5.6.
We are losing the punt battle by about 10yds per punt to our opponent. And losing about 8yds per kick return. When all is said and done we are losing the ST yardage battle by a minimum of 50 yds per game if you assume 3 punts and 3 kickoffs per team. Some games will be worse. Just wow...

Year O'Quinn is gone for sure.
This could/should be a bloody off-season as far as the coaches on this team go. Who will remain, and who gets the dreaded pink-slip.
Cause - it's coming !

Good Gracious! At minimum, JG should have been fired after the Vikings game. Though I would've bounced him after the Jets loss. So, another season lost due to coach-still-in-training wheels.

Reminds me of the time I taught my son to ride a bike. It lasted all of a month. The training wheels never came off, and even after he tried again in his teen years, he just kept falling off. He simply couldn't keep his balance. I also had a friend who couldn't swim because she literally sank to the bottom whenever she tried. And no amount of lessons, or practicing helped. As soon as she turned vertical, she sank like a rock. We even tried to hold her up, then let go. Boom, down she went.

Both of these instances were an interesting phenomenon to watch. I believe this sums up JG. He just doesn't have it. I do think he has a higher calling awaiting him, like, inspirational speaker. Or maybe he could start coaching in the college ranks, say UTEP, then work his way back to the NFL. The lack of coaching foundation has really hurt him, imho.

Awesome! We're also playing against the best special teams in the Bills. Hooray!

Maybe it was Keith O'Quinn, or a close relative

The Bills also have bad special teams. They're good at kickoff returns, but they're awful at kickoffs and even worse than we are at punting.

Another interesting stat - we haven't returned a kickoff for a td since Wade was HC.
