You can come up with all the excuses you want. The numbers don't lie. You've said over 700 things on this forum that nobody liked and that speaks volumes to me.

Reality should be knighted for the likes feature. We can finally keep score and know who's winning.

Remember the “Likes Banquet”? That was funny when you loosened the lids on the salt and pepper shakers!

Silverbear here?
Ran into Silver Bear on the USENET group, back when folks like Wick and Bear (i.e. Larry Cottrill) were posting there. USENET went to hell in a handbasket when more folks got onto the internet and trolls realized it wasn't moderated. Went looking for another place where Larry could be found, ran into this spot.

On the old usenet there was a guy .. can't remember all of his handle but it ended in "Warner". His analysis was the best I had seen an amateur do. Maybe @InmanRoshi from Twitter comes close but very few do. In the age of all 22 we have analysis as good as it has been, but in the 90s, "warner" was doing it with eyeballs and sheer intelligence.

And just an aside, if you're not occasionally checking out Voch Lombardi, you're missing out.

Excellent idea and great thread OP.

I've been here since 2005 and although I do not post much I do read the board everyday. It's the only sports board that I read. Despite a few warts, I think it's an amazing group of fans here. There are so many things that I've seen on this board that it would be hard to choose any sort of favorites.

There are many knowable fans on this board and I enjoy reading their posts. I am also thankful for all the members who repost articles, tweets, and other information. Thanks to their work I never have to go anywhere else for my Cowboy news.

Although he doesn't do it like he used to, I always thought it was funny when @Risen Star would throw a grenade into a thread and then walk away. Besides that, it would be impossible for me to list all the great and informed posters on here. Even if I don't always agree I can appreciate their knowledge of the game.

I hope for another great 15 years on the board.

Only 700, that speaks volumes of all the posts that were liked. Even if I wasn't given a like.

As for you, the counter is off, I think it is set at 3 / 1 somehow, they need to fix that, you must be paying people to give you likes.
But I also would bet if there was a dislike button, you would have 300,000 on that count. And lead by a mile over anyone else. :muttley:

Well, there were a couple/few dozen people who made that newsgroup interesting and reading about the Cowboys a little dry than it otherwise would have been. You were one of them.

In my "I have some spare time, so why not" search I discovered some interesting things. People's occupation, that there likely is an aversion to social media (or a strong desire for privacy) amongst the core people from that group, and a few other things. I'm sorry to hear about your medical issues, but, like you said, it's better than the alternative. I was saddened by the fact that one of the regulars from those days passed away from cancer a couple of years ago. Glad you're not on that list yet!

I'd mentioned that someone from that newsgroup pointed this (and a couple of other boards that were active at the time) out to me as an alternative to the newsgroup. That person was you! That's been nearly 15 years ago, as I came to the realization that the Usenet board was dying. Actually, all of usenet was dying and the alternatives you pointed out actually ended up being replacements for it over time.

I miss the mid- to late 90s era of that group (and the Internet as a whole really). You could see the beginning of the end of the Internet as a "nerd reserve" as early as 1996. The ratio of informed opinion to noise began to invert. By 1998 the trend was undeniable. By 1999, the handwriting was on the wall. Usenet became increasingly cumbersome and, eventually, useless. Even for active boards like the Cowboys one, the game was up by 2004 or 2005 (and that's me being generous).

That situation was a microcosm of the net as a whole. I learned about the "eternal September" concept in the early 2000s without knowing I'd loved through it for years. Expertise and knowledge took a back seat to clueless rants, trolling, and spam. I was glad that, of all boards, the Cowboys one would hang on almost as long as any other in terms of quality.

I rarely posted to the group (the same goes here). I enjoy(ed) reading about the Cowboys, so I treated it mostly as a news source. But, I still feel some fondness for that old newsgroup and the people who DID participate in it with such consistency and passion. Glad to hear from you. Less glad to hear about your tumbles! I hope you continue to heal and improve.

I like this board. But nothing will ever quite be like alt.sports.football.pro.dallas-cowboys!

I'm seriously flattered that anybody would go to the trouble of looking up my crusty old butt... I'm alive and more or less well-- I got a bad flu bug a few years back, it got into my heart, came down with viral cardiomyopathy that led to congestive heart failure... been maintaining it with meds, but it recently got to the point where they're gonna implant a biventricular pacemaker right after the first of the year... I'm actually looking forward to it, CHF makes you shortwinded and tired all the freakin' time, and I'm ready to get some of my old energy back...

Then the end of last October-- you guys are gonna shake your head at this one-- I slipped in a pool of oil in the parking lot of the hotel I'm working at part time in my semi-retirement, and smashed my left kneecap, breaking the hell out of my femur in the process... the docs said I needed a plate in my leg, and scheduled me for surgery the following Monday... sent me home on crutches, loaded up on Vicodin, leading me to fall the next morning on the way to the bathroom... threw my left arm out to make sure I didn't fall on my left side, and broke my arm right behind my wrist... now I'm looking at two surgeries... seriously, have any of you EVER heard of anybody breaking two different bones, on consecutive days??

So after surgery, it was 20 days in a rehab center (what a freakin' nightmare that place was), and a total of 11 weeks off of work... I'm as healed now as I'm ever gonna get, but I'm not much more than 90 per cent of what I was before all this... ah well, getting old sucks, but it beats the hell out of the alternative... you've just gotta roll with the punches...

I don't post as much anywhere these days, maybe if the pacemaker gets me a little more energy I'll get back in the swing of things... I still live and breathe the draft, though...

Was part of the board before the zone and changed over in the mass movement in 04. Never was a major poster. Lurked alot. Had a great appreciation for Pops. A look behind the scenes gave me a whole new prospective for Reality ,WG and other mods. They have kept this place running as smooth as possible for the amount of personalities that are here. Talk to some of the old timers every now and then. (Juke has published a book) I 'm here everyday just reading the news and the nonsense that is posted. Have a happy Turkey day.

Glad to see you’re still around SB! How’s the leg?

Gets a little arthritic when it's cold or damp, but nothing I can't handle... I figure I'll get the CHF under control with the help of the pacemaker right after the first of the year, then try to get back to my walking regime next spring... I'm sure I won't cover quite as much ground in an hour as I used to, but maybe by next fall I'll have the leg built back up...

But the arm, ah the arm... let's just say I don't foresee swinging a golf club again in this lifetime... I swear that orthopedic surgeon damaged a nerve near my thumb when she implanted the pins for my external fixator bar... I'm learning that as you live longer, life takes more and more things from you...

I reckon I'll stick around as long as I can anyway...

Dallas beat the Lions in a meaningless game in 2004. Afterwards, Nors said that giving Eddie George 30 carries was the key to that victory.

That was such a stupid comment that it broke my will, ended my days as a lurker, and led to my first post ever.

Here's to you, Nors.

I remember when Nors said that Ricky Ray was the future of the NFL at the QB position and wanted us to get him in any way possible...

Man, there are some memories. I used to be at the old board, but it just became unbearable. I joined 2008 I think and remember some really interesting posters - Hostile, Fuzzy, Adam, couchscout, boozeman, bob sacamano, leotis, and some other guy that started his own board where the "negative people" went after some abysmal Cowboy Season (cant remember if it was an 8-8 year or 2010), etc.

There seems to always be a "homer" action and a "hater" faction. Romo, Wade, Garrett, rob ryan, dez, and of course Jerry.

While there are a million good posts, rants and info, etc., the one insane time that sticks with me was one gameday thread game against the Bears in 2010, I think, during the height of the "Romo will never win the big one" debate.

Romo threw 5 ints in the game and one guy by the name of 30ydslant, I believe, just lost it and began posting graphic gay porn pics for some reason. It was one of those things where you were surprised by who did it as I dont recall him being overly vocal. The Board melted down. People were responding to the posts with contempt and disgust, which reposted the pics. Mods were deleting blocks of posts. I posted "Everyone, stop hitting reply, LOL" in CAPS and the mod who lived in Hawaii threatened to kick me out as I think he thought I was encouraging it. He misread it and apologized, but it was 20 minutes of insanity.

There was one reply of "This is a family friendly sight A-hole" and the reply has a finishing move pic above it. It ust is something you dont easily forget. LOL

I was soooo there for that! Too darn funny.

{DECLOAK}

Good to see Bear is still around from Usenet. As Usenet died, this place was pretty much where many ended up. Hope everyone from those days of Usenet glory is doing well...

Lol. He was the fake news guy right? Name definitely rings a bell.

SilverBear, Houston Sucks, FlaCowpoke, Rack, ChocolateLab....some names that come to mind when thinking of that place.

He claimed he was the cousin of a Devean George who was a laker at the time. Got pissed one time and threatened to come to another posters home and kick their ***. Said he was a huge black guy at that time and told that poster he didn't want him as a problem. Had a meltdown and admitted he was a a skinny white teenager and begged for forgiveness. He had alot of posters folded.

Is silverbear still around, he was a well spoken good dude from what I remember. Rack was a passionate nutjob yes? I recognize twodeep3 from scouts old site, I remember him being full of himself over there. He seems to have mellowed out.

Don't visit this site as much anymore because there are too many posters here that are unbearable. And they all seem to come out after a loss. They all want to be heard so they rush to create threads after a loss to share their hot takes and opinions that usually end up being downright stupid or obvious.

Still I lurk and read every now and again because this place still remains the best Dallas Cowboys Forum in existence.
