The mystery of teams that beat themselves

How many times do we hear and see it? They can't get out of their own way. They'll be alright if they don't beat themselves.

How many times did you hear that comparison between the Bills and the Cowboys? The Bills are a team that doesn't beat themselves. So are the Patriots, that's why they've been that good.

The week before, the Cowboys handed 10 of their 13 points to NE with turnovers. They had fumbles in the NO game to stop drives. They have drive stopping penalties early in too many games.

So, why do some teams have that problem and others do not? But the real question is how do you fix the problem? Is this on coaching or on the field leadership?

How does a team fix this problem with the coaches and players they have within the season? Is that probable?

They won’t fix it within the season because the problem is the players themselves. Until we rid of this cancerous roster and coaching staff, nothing will change.

Coaching, coaching and more coaching.

Look at Cleveland. Very talented. But turnover and penalty prone. Undisciplined. Then look at their HC.

Then look at the Cowboys HC. The explanation becomes obvious. Nothing more needs to be said.

There is no mystery.

I don't think Garrett cares at this point. I hope he proves me wrong but his demeanor suggests someone playing out the string.
And yet Jerry won't get rid of them because then "there is zero chance at a Super Bowl"

As if they have a chance now.

A switch that you could flip that controls energy, a sense of urgency, discipline and focus? I don't think so. This season you hope for the best, next season you prepare to be the best, and that's going to take Jerry stepping out of his comfort zone.

I think he might have even approached the season in that manner. He did not look like he was enjoying his job on the sideline. And probably pissed over that Linehan embarrassment but 6M can soothe a lot of hurt feelings.

The Cowboys do just enough to lose. How many times are we going to hear the same excuse, well they have a good defense? Saints, Patriots, Bills, next week it will be Chicago if we score 13 points.

I think you're right. He hasn't seemed interested this season. The Linehan situation had to be a major embarrassment. Jones essentially castrated him with how that went down.

Browns, Chargers, Falcons, and Cowboys all play sloppy and can't get out of their own way at times.

All of them have quite a bit of talent, but none of them have a coach worth a darn.

Offensive turnovers do happen.
Except to teams that play us.

Offensive turnovers - Games
3 - 2
2 - 2
1 - 6
0 - 2

Defensive takeaways - Games
4 - 1
3 - 1
2 - 1
1 - 3
0 - 6

I consider 1 or fewer turnovers a win, 1 or fewer takeaways a loss.
8 games, we have 1 or fewer turnovers.
9 games, we have 1 or fewer takeaways.

The lack of defensive takeaways looks like the bigger problem to me.

It's lack of Discipline and attention to detail. Discipline isn't something your are born with. It's something that is drilled into you from a young age. But even if you are a disciplined person, that quality can be lost if you find yourself in an undisciplined environment.

Jimmy Johnson was right. You can't have a "Country Club" environment. You need one leader. That leader has the power and instills the discipline and direction. And he is respected. Because he has skins on the wall to prove it.

Garrett and Jones are not leaders. They have no skins on the wall. They are intellectuals, corporatists, and business people. They make business decisions. And so do their teams.

That's not going to work. And it hasn't.

Going after coaching is the new rage.

But you like to talk about a lack of accountability, so fans should start holding players accountable. Guys who kill drives with penalties, botched assignments, drops, turnovers, etc. shouldn't be lauded as, "one of the most talented rosters in the league."

I would think peer pressure would be the quickest fix. A coach could make them sit out after screwing up, but who has backups capable of not costing you. About the only time I see that is for kick returners, so that's not a good fix.

The head coach sets the tone.
Saw it with Jimmy.
He did not except fumbling.

Too much glamour. Players on defence think this way. The OL is herald as the best in the league but are not. Dak thinks he should be paid like Russell Wilson but seriously he can’t carry his jock. The owner is trying to sell his brand and the media continues to sell every rumour as the 2nd coming of Christ is coming. Where is the football?
