Dak/Amari problem could have been avoided

They Cowboys are going to sign them when they think it's the best time and for the most team friend deal the team can negotiate. The Zeke contract did not change that. It might affect some players below Dak/Cooper but not them.

Just because you get a really good deal on a car for yourself does not mean you'll just show up and pay sticker price for your wife's car.
I dont think Elliots deal will affect anything. He has basically a 4yr 50mil deal. They can cut him after the 2022 season, or will most likely restruture his deal to give him more guaranteed money and lower his cap hits. Either way its a good deal for both sides. He will only be 27 after the 2022 season so he'd still be able to get a nice contract, or he stays in Dallas and keep his security and familiarity.

By simply not paying Zeke.

Zeke was third in line for a contract, but Jerry gave in to the pouting brat.

If the Cowboys had just done what the Chargers did with Melvin Gordon, Zeke would be here (still on a rookie deal), and we’d be able to shell out $35 million for Dak and $20 million for Amari. Or franchise tag either/or, if negotiations weren’t going well.

But nooooooo, we had to overpay for the most replaceable position in football and back ourselves into a corner. It’s really coming back to bite us now.

Even if Zeke had held out and not come back, who cares? Anyone who says Pollard wouldn’t have similar production #s is a liar.
Prove it.......

The FO is just stupid. This will give every reason for Dak and Amari to ask for top money even though that may not even deserve it. I still believe then that we should have just let Zeke hold out the entire year and go with Pollard and sign someone else off the streets. I think Tevin Coleman was available at that time.

We paid way too much for Zeke who right now not even carrying this team. His contract is the worst one we ever signed. Worst than DLaw's.

That's easy to say, but suppose Jerry hadn't made a deal with Zeke, and Zeke sat out the season, and the season went to hell (which is likely given that it is even going to hell with him), then what we would be saying now is that Jerry was an idiot for letting Zeke sit out, and that is the reason a talented team is going nowhere.

If we had football minded guys running this organization they would have had a better idea whether this can survive with or without Zeke. But there really isn't any football minded guys that's running this organization.

The Cowboys could have gotten permission from the Raiders to negotiate with Cooper.
Maybe - who knows what the Raiders would have said to that, or even if the Cowboys tried. And who knows if Cooper was willing. As we've seen this year, Cooper has no problem holding off on negotiating, and going with the plan of proving himself on the field before negotiating.

There are other GM's running football teams that are no more "football minded guys" than Jerry. The fact that a person with Jerry's experience is in that role isn't really the problem. The problem is that because he is also the owner, the GM doesn't have anyone to answer to - nobody above him with the ability to evaluate him and make decisions on his employment status. That gives the GM much more of an iron fisted control than other GM's, and keeps him from being held accountable for shortcomings.

True that, but Jerry thought he could buy a championship by spending that kind of money, thought he had his ace in the hole.
Jerry was having flashbacks of the Charles Haley and Deion Sanders days, when you could add to an already stacked team, and push your way in.
A majority in this house this forum said it would be a huge mistake, and the pay Zeke supporters stood their ground buying in to the Jerry thought process.
Paying Zeke buried this team for several years now,, he runs like a fat Bell Cow,
collecting a large portion of the cap, and doesn't make a difference.
Jerry might be destroying this franchise with an Al Davis type of Dementia that totally buries a franchise for decades.

A lot of proof that the offense ran through Zeke.

Now that the line is avg.....Zeke is avg, and the team is avg.

Actually, the offense ran through a stout O-line at the time. Now, not so much, so, not one area looks dominating on offense, Unless it's against inferior teams.

That is one of many issues with this team. He is not only the GM and owner but he also dictates who to hire and fire as coaches. Although I not a fan of Garrett at all. I feel sorry for him because he is nothing more than a puppet. That means that Jerry dictates what Garrett does on a coaching level and it must weigh down the entire team because of it.

^^^this

Over paying a RB with questionable character is beyond stupid. Factor in all the other important contracts that needed to get done and it is more stupid than beyond stupid. I actually feel sorry for the next coach. This roster will need a lot of work.

If nothing else the Zeke signing may have limited overpaying Dak and Cooper. Dak is not worth $35 million. Zeke has not played up to his pay and neither has Lawrence.

Most of them wont be back and the ones they bring back shouldn't break the bank.
