Has Dak miscalculated?

The big news preseason was that Dak decided to play out the season rather than accepting a deal in the 30m per annum range. Thinking he would increase his worth over the season. Play well, get a bigger deal etc But has this gamble failed from another perspective? The lack of new openings for starters in 2020. Lets look around the league:

NFC East - none of the other teams expected to look for a new QB.

NFC North - only possibility is Rodgers deciding to retire.

NFC South - Even if Brees retires, Saints have Bridgewater. Only possibility is Tampa Bay?

NFC West - no changes expected.

AFC East - will Brady retire? Will the Dolphins sign a QB to compete with Rosen

AFC North - Will the Bengals clean house?

AFC South - no changes expected.

AFC West - will Rivers retire. Raiders sign someone to compete?

Not many spots - depends on the number of high profile retirements. A few teams may sign "number 2 plus" QBs to push their starter or as an interim replacement for a retirement, but these will all be in the 5m to 10m range per year with low guarantees.

What's Daks competition? The other experienced starter on the market will be Case Keenum.

We're also told there are good QBs in the draft.

So even if Dak had a good season, there are very few teams expected to offer 30m plus to ANY QB.

His best choice is Pittsburgh, imo. They're one of the best at building rosters and they seem consistently a 10 win team. Probably won't get $30 million, but at this point he should just sign and not take any more gambles like this. It's not smart anymore.

Not to mention, when we play Pittsburgh next year. Dak vs the Cowboys.... can't wait for that one.

Dak's highest value is with Dallas. If he leaves Dallas then they have nothing. Dallas will need to franchise him so Dak gets the $30 million he already turned down. I would also add Carolina, Denver, and Jacksonville (though they have an expensive Foles) as teams that might want a QB without having to draft and rebuild. I would have put Chicago on that list until Trubisky looked all world against Dallas so I guess the Dallas loss at least might have accomplished tying Trubisky to the Bears for a little longer.

Dak should have fired his agent......weeks ago. Leaving meat on the bone that he will not get soon. He gonna get the Kirk Cousin Franchise tag special.

Well Jerry likes Dak personally. JJ forgets that this is the NFL and not fun family football weekend.

At 57, I bet I can weasel my way onto the Cowboys starting team with a bit of positive motivational talk..

Oh the pain....poor Jerry thought he had found lighting in a bottle in the 4th round with Dak only to end up now with a below average QB which he will have to tag to keep till he finds another prospect.
And the talent on the team is getting older and beaten up like Smith,Martin,Fred,Zeke etc etc.
Plus he blew the Coop trade cause in order to keep him he has to over pay him.
Jerry here's some advice...swallow your pride trade up in the draft or trade for Foles, Bridgewater, and cut ties with Dak as the kid simply is bench material at best and even tagging him is a waste of good Cap dollars and move on.
Oh the pain and the stupidity of GM Jerry then we wonder how a quarter of a century has passed and haven't even been to the NFL champ game.

Cousins has made a lot of money. If that’s the route Dak takes....he’s going to be rich.

When Cousins hit FA it was a sellers market - more vacancies than available starters. 2020 looks like a buyers market.

I honestly think Kitna told Jerry to hold off on Dak. As the season progresses he is constantly throwing behind his receivers. The first 6 games the ball was getting there most of the time, lately its more late than on time. Bad sign.

Come this spring demand for Dak will be very little and no team will even offer over 20 million a year for his services.
Don't listen to these Dak-Groupies here who are selling crazy daily and trust your eyes and the results 6-7 currently and we still haven't beaten a quality team!
Dak will go down as another GM Jerry mistake (aka Jimmy) that cost us Romo a true franchise QB and wasted another 4 years....maybe more?

He's been doing this for 4 years now. Alot of times the OL and or receivers have bailed him out.

I’m saying in regards to him being franchise raggedy that’s 73 million in two years. The joke is on this organization. You can move money around on long term deals to clear space. Can’t do that on franchise deals.

Why would Kitna do that? His job is on the line lol.

You know we have 80 million in cap space for next season. With the right moves (new coach, improved schemes defense/offense, improved special teams) we could be really good next season. I would franchise and trade both Dak and Amari for draft picks. I would draft a quarterback in the first round and keep him on a five year deal. Brian Broaddus said a few years ago that the price of the quarterback is ridiculous and you need to draft one and keep them for 5 years then move on. Dak is one of the greatest bargains in NFL history but if you sign him to a extension he becomes a detriment.
