Is there a star DC out there to make this defense elite?

No matter how good the offense gets, this team isn't winning anything without a legit, elite defense. Two things have to happen:

1) Franchise needs to find an innovative new aged Defensive Coordinator. Move away from the old age, bend but don't break defense that limits the big plays, but rather move towards more of an attacking defense that keeps offenses off-balanced.

2) This new DC needs to have an eye for talent. Find players that fit his scheme. Convince the front office to target his type of players and move away from drafting all world athletes that possess zero football instincts.

Is there any coordinator out there to make this defense elite?

Is there really any such thing as a ‘real, elite defense anymore’, especially with the way the rules are played? Yes, we need to improve but even the Rams, led by Wade and with guys like Donald, are having duds this year, particularly because of DB play which is why they went and got Ramsey. But they then got lit up by the Ravens and prior to Ramsey the Buccaneers put up like 50 against them.

Part of that is also because Goff is playing like trash too and the Rams can’t sustain drives at times and refuse to run the ball.

This era caters towards offense and teams need to be able to light it up.

I doubt hes Jerry's first choice, but I wouldn't be surprised if eberflus isnt on the HC list for 2020. Also Don Martindales name should be getting thrown around more. Lamar jackson is getting all the praise in Baltimore, but that defense has played to a very high level, and has done a great job creating negative plays and turnovers...the two things this defense seems allergic to.

There’s two ways to make this an elite defense:

1) Finally get stud DT and NT and stop using filler from 3rd and 6th round projects.

2) Change to a 3-4 that is easier to hide your blitzes and assignments.

There’s not any 4-3 teams I know of that just use filler on the inside of their defense and still have success.

49ers are the best defense in the league because they’ve gone all out on beefing up the DL. When Maliek Collins is your best interior player you’ve got issues.

A move to the 3-4 is interesting, but would be really tough, and would almost take a complete overhaul of the front 7. I cant imagine them giving dlaw that kind of contract then putting him in an OLB role just a year later. LVE and Jaylon might make a solid 3-4 MLB package though.

I agree that’s tougher which is why I’d rather change 2 pieces than 5-6. Also get a Buffalo style blitz scheme in here to take advantage of the athletes.

When Parcels went from a 4-3 to a 3-4, it set the franchise back for years, and when they went back to the 4-3, it set them back another 10 years. They still have not recovered from it, as the defense sucked for years and years, even before Parcels.

Yeah, he was just fired in Carolina.
Ron Rivera is a very good coach who has been able to create very good defenses.

Yes plenty can make this defense elite

when Sam Darnold says “they do the same thing” then you know its a coaching issue

in my heart I believe a D coordinator that simply says “this isnt working lets vary our coverage” will make this defense elite

and for craps sake get someone who values 1 round DTs who can eat up blocking they control games without registering stats

Why would Rivera come here? Pretty sure his first priority is finding another head coaching job. There are some rethreads out there......Jeff Fisher, Bob Ryan, Marvin Lewis. You can also look at teams making head coaching changes.

What set them back was running a 4-3 but never investing in the middle of the D. You need stud DTs to stop the run. DEs are great on 3rd downs but you can’t make it 3rd and long if you can’t stop the run.

there are. Marinelli and Richard combined have been very disappointing.
I think Richard can do a good job if he's calling his defense and not calling Marinellis. Co-coordinators don't work very often. I can imagine the tension in the defensive war room with two coordinators trying to get there own way. I've seen it happen. The only way to make it work is for the head coach to step in, tell them to shut the hell up and approve the game plan himself.
I did it twice. The first time did not work well. I had to replace my secondary coach which was pass game coordinator. It worked great with his replacement. They were on the same page scheme wise. I just don't see Marinelli giving in to Richard very often, very frustrating for Richard, I'm sure.

Ive been asking for them to draft DTs just like they drafted O lineman

You cant just keep putting projects and undrafted guys there DT is the most important position on a defense without it you cant control the line of scrimmage

I don’t know about a star, but Brent Venables is the best defensive coordinator in the NCAA. I’d at least like to speak with him if I were looking to retool a defense. He’s intense and this team needs that.
