You guys can bash Garrett all you want, but Marinelli and the special teams coach are the single biggest problems this team has now as constructed.

While we are at it, Richard is probably next in line for blame, but it’s hard to tell for sure with the crazy organization structure.

Garrett is actually going to get scapegoated here this year because of his assistants. Like Alannis Morissette once said, “It’s a little bit ironic”....

O'Quinn and Marrinelli are a problem with Garrett included

Newsflash - in other cities the HC is accountable for the performance of both his assistant coaches and the players.

A HC oversees the entire team.

He has to have his eyes in all areas of his team. He delegates roles and duties among his top assistants and entrusts them to carry it out to best of their abilities.
But if their area continues to become so problematic that it threatens to place this team in losing states, then that's when that HC has to place his input and authority to act
and address accordingly.

- Saint's Sean Payton's attention is geared towards his offense, because he can entrust his DC Dennis Allen, who for most part, most times D" unit comes thru for them, but prior to Allen, he's
had to address DC after DC until he finally gets it right.

- if Vikes HC Mike Zimmer sees that his pass happy OC refuses to run the ball, then Zimmer the HC has to act accordingly to replace that problematic coach that threatens his team.

- if Scott Linehan's mediocre and predictable stone age offensive play calling and design seems a big hinderance to this team, then Garrett needs to act accordingly to make
immediate improvement.

- If we continue to see a defense that is knocked around, bowled over and out-physical by every team we face game after game, year after year, and whose personnel preference has
hindered this team's progress, it's time to make a departure and upgrade from that coach, instead of feeling the need to keep patting and praising that old school DL coach.
Marinelli should have been long forced to retire right after the 2018 playoff loss instead of being allowed to return yet another season.

Jason Garrett: “We are not a team that plays a zillion different coverages, a zillion different fronts, a zillion different pressures. A lot of teams approach it that way. We believe in being more fundamentally sound by doing a handful of things in our coverages, in our fronts, in our pressures.”

“We believe it’s hard to execute at a high level when you have too much stuff on defense, but we do believe we have a variety of things to complement each other. Once the ball is snapped, we are going to rely on executing at a high level.”

Welp there goes your theory that Garrett is some innocent victim being setup to fail by Marinelli and he has no control over the play of his defense.

Fundamentally sound? Executing on a high level? Since when?

- those Bear teams had ball hawks, people that could create turnovers - how long have we've been trying to do so ?

- But despite what some prefer to think of Marinelli's title or supposed control over the entire defense which includes the back seven, he has no control over DBs
that cannot turn their heads to make plays on the ball, or DBs that cannot make forced fumbles or INTs. turnovers, his real responsibilities and tasks are reduced down
to handling the front four, run defense gap scheme and the pass rush....and how have those areas worked out lately for Marinelli ?

- and not only does he flat out effects how we play defense, how limited and vulnerable we are playing defense, and he flat effects how we draft and try to acquire DL talent.

This is a side note, but does anyone remember the last time we had a CB that actually played the ball? It’s almost like the Cowboys insist on DBs not play the ball. Lol

wow, I think we'd have to go as far and looong back as 2008, with the likes of CB Mike Jenkins when he became starter in 2008, I think he went to his one, lone pro bowl in 2009 and I want to say
Jenkins had 5 INTs.

before that, maybe the likes of Clev FA Anthony Henry, .. one year starter rookie Derek Ross (5 INTs) who ran into major drug substance issues and out of NFL. i'm luke warm to say Terrence Newman was a true ball hawk, but no question he seems to perform better when he was paired with coach Mike Zimmer.

but going this damn long for over a decade and we still don't have ball hawks -
this is where I questioned the scouting dept. and this has been long before McClay even came on the scene as primary scout director, .. and long before Kris Richard or Marinelli even arrived on the scene.

to have gone with Claiborne, Brandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick ..and now into Byron Jones, Anthony Browns, and Chido Awuzie, we haven't scouted and draft well with ball hawk skills in mind, imo.

I think there might be a disconnect between what the DL is doing and what Richard is doing on the back end, but IMO it's suspect to blame Marinelli for the secondary's issues. Further, Richard didn't blitz much when he was calling plays in Seattle.

He's very overrated by people here.

I don't remember a plethora of interceptions or outstanding secondary play before Richard got here.

I agree that richard is overrated and should be fired but , I think there is also a deliberate effort by some forum members
To use richard as a scapegoat in a attempt to Apologize for rod. The defense has been a liability for most of rod's tenure with the cowboys. That's why I'm in favor of cleaning house among the defensive coaching staff after the season is over

They all suck. But Marinelli didn’t suddenly forget how to coach. JG’s overall tone is killing this team. And Richard handles the secondary and they have regressed. Big time.

Marinelli may not have forgotten how to coach, but it seems obvious that he is stuck in his ways.

That said JG has stuck with him for 7 plus years now and doesn't seem to add much to that side of the ball.

Jason Garrett Translation: "we believe in relying on each individual player beating the guy in front of them and when they don't we scapegoat them out of Dallas."

Why is Richard not 50% responsible for this defensive failure?

Since 2011 no team has had fewer interceptions than Big D.

The defensive coaching staff needs to be completely gutted. I know the blame falls to Garrett for a lot of stuff, but the defensive philosophy with this group of talent on defense is not sustainable. Average to below average QB's are having their best game of the season against this defense. Ball control drives right down the field. The only coach I would keep is Moore and Kitna and maybe a couple offensive assistants because Moore has shown promise and he's just starting. I would definitely go looking for a new Oline coach. The Oline, for as much as they are being paid, is just average.

I believe Marinelli turned over the play calling to Richard last year. Either way, they can both go. Along with Garrett and everyone else. The new HC should select his own staff. If not, it's just more of the same from the front office.

That doesn't mean anything. Marinelli turned over play calling to Richard, but it's still his job to ensure that his defense is being called and is being executed in the manner that it is supposed to. If Marinelli is going to delegate his responsibility to Richard then it's Marinelli's job to make sure that Richard is actually performing it correctly. Just as it is Jason Garrett's job to follow up with Marinelli and Richard and ask them why their defense has more holes than a Disney Star Wars plot.

Agreed,,, it's really an untenable position to be named head coach and then have the Jones' pick your coordinators and players for you. If you're going to be fired because of THEIR performance then you should have more control over who gets hired to fill those positions.

He didn't forget how to coach stuff that worked in 2002. He has ZERO clue how to coach against offenses in 2019....
