What if Meyer walks away?

One thing I have come to believe about NFL rumors, there's fire beneath the smoke because they leak this information on purpose.

Meyer has openly built up the HC of the Cowboys as the job of jobs. I think a deal is already in place and could have been during or even before this season.

I am still thinking this was a last year for Garrett by mutual agreement and more from Garrett's end than Booger's. I think he's like the monkey humping the skunk, had all he can stand, not all he wants, mind you, but all he can stand.

I see the Garrett fans being happy, because they dont want to return to our winning ways.

I personally wont care, i dont see anyone coming in and saying to Jerry "we are going to install a winning culture" Jerry fired 2 super bowl winning coaches, he will not stand winning standards here. Tho to be really fair, i dont see Meyer having success NOR leaving the college gig, they have become Gods and its not worth leaving, ask the Rutgers coach.

Meyer doesn't have a 'college gig'. He's a studio guy for Fox's college gameday.

What would you think then?

Would it be a big deal with you or not?

Would you be happy because you didn't want the guy in the first place?

Would you be saddened that they missed out on the best candidate?

For me, if all of this smoke doesn't materialize in his hiring I will be extremely disappointed and resigned to the fact that Jerry Jones would not make the needed concessions and loosening of his death grip.

Despite the joy of Garrett being gone, I will worry about just more of the same with a new name rather than actual change in this team.

What say you all?

How many Meyer threads is this for you today? lol

So who else would?
Lincoln Riley (with an experienced and accomplished DC)
Dabo Sweeney (Pipe dream, I know)
Belichek (Not happening)
Payton (Probably not)

Bottom Line: I'm ready to keep an open mind to other candidates. I like Urban Meyer and would be perfectly fine with that hire. But I'm not on the "Meyer or bust" train. It's too myopic, IMO. I think we should keep an open mind.

it would be great.

He and his spread offense should go coach in college where he belongs.

Have you not been watching the NFL over the last few years?

This ain't Landry or Lombardi's NFL anymore.

Just another tired out, false narrative that needs to die off.

Is there another 'name' for you that would ease your concerns?

The only two outside of Meyer that I would feel good about are Belichick and Payton, and I don't think they could get either one.

I think HC is a part of it but the new staff top to bottom is even more important. Our Special Teams coach this year was a disaster and Kellen Moore did well for a first year OC, but the rest of this year's staff underperformed.

I really don't follow the details of guys like Meyer or Riley but I think the odds are high its a guy like that. But Jerry has pulled a lot of moves to push all his chips in, I wouldn't rule out Belichick or Payton being the guy - at all.

I want the hire to be someone that could potentially ruin/discolor their own coaching legacy if they fail in Dallas. Meyer as one example.

Not someone, as Direwolf mentioned that might be here for the wrong reasons; a last payday, potentially reinvigorating their own profile etc.. those types will roll the dice that they can handle Jerry with no real assertions that the coaching aspect of the team would be strictly left to them.

The ones that have a chance are those that will not risk their own identities just for a high profile payday and get real guarantees that they have football control.

One caveat, Jerry throws stupid money at someone, like Meyer as an example, and the cash is so lucrative that they simply say screw it i can put up with almost anything for this dough and if it doesn't work out i'll just drop it all in Jerry's lap and i'm tactful and media savvy enough to ensure he gets all the blame.

I wouldn't hate on any of those names but I am not a fan of hiring Riley because I think he would be too susceptible to Jones continued interference and that "experienced DC" has eluded him to this point.

He's off my list.

I don't think you can get 'em, but I reserve the right to be pleasantly surprised.

Even with him expressing interest in coming to Dallas he's still not a shoe in to be hired.................with Jerry always wanting to be the smartest guy in the room he's more apt to hire someone nobody's ever heard of to keep trying to prove he's a football wizard.
Or he wants to prove that he's such a great guy to work for, Meyer openly auditioned for the job.

I don't get the shine on this job. This isn't Landry, Johnson or Parcells, who said the same thing about having that on his resume. This job is THE job for all of the wrong reasons. They get coverage but it's not just about football. They get viewers but it's not just about the fans. Their players get the star treatment for doing nothing.

I gotta say, I am intrigued by this, ron, because I don't know if you've experienced this but I have more than I'd like to remember. There's the job you interview for and the one it ends up being. I could see Booger going along to get Meyer but then when it either gets really good or bad, can't keep himself in check. Are Booger & Son going to agree to stay out of Meyer's coaches and team meetings? Is Booger going to allow Meyer to announce the injuries? Is Booger going to keep his mouth shut after a game and not beat his HC to the post game comments?

Hell, hire Meyer and let the fun begin.
