When is the last time a tenured coach's contract just expired?

You either get fired, or you get extended. Can someone else think of another time it's just been ... over?

Truthfully, I was hoping several members of the current coaching staff would be fired this morning, starting with Garrett.

Excellent Question. Most coaches would never agree to coach with an expiring contract.

Bill Parcells here in 06 I believe was on a one year deal but he was in charge of staying and going.

Not sure of the exact timing but Garrett's last contract ran though 2014 and he didn't get the extension until 2015. It may have been before the 2014 contract actually expired though but it was after the season ended, i believe. Either way, he coached 2014 on his last year of that contract as well.

I think the closest we can come to that is a coach retiring, but that's not the same as what you're referring to. This shouldn't have been the case with Garrett either. What possessed Jerry to keep an interim head coach after three consecutive 8-8 seasons is beyond me. But it's an oddity like that which leads us to what is most likely a unique situation that is now.

Arizona or philly? I am racking my brain trying to think of someone else who did this. Did Andy Reid have a year left when he left Philly in 2012?
I think he did because Lurie spelled out what he had to do to get a new contract. It is not customary to have a HC in his last year, usually they will add a one year extension but I don't know how much of that is guaranteed.

It is possible that they discussed it and Garrett didn't want it.

that's why I expected this year to be doomed to start. no OC worth anything would come here in a head coaches last year of a contract in a lame duck year. so Moore gets promoted...then Jerry says, if Moore doesn't call the plays, he can come directly to me....that's ***** up....

I think Norman Nraman was the owner when Buddy Ryan wasn't offered a new contract. Remember, he called him the man in France because he was never around.
Jeffrey Lurie bought the team in 1994.

I remember all of this because I live in the Philadelphia market.

I really wish Buddy would have stuck around for the Cowboys dominate years under Jimmy Johnson. Can you imagine how epic those games would have been?
