Jerry's decision not to fire Garrett weeks ago backfired

If they hire the right coach, it will be funny watching some of you walk back what you are saying now.

This team is more talented than their record shows. Now SB level? Of course not. But there is zero doubt this team should have been better than 8-8.

You think Zeke can get through this offseason without incident?

Yet the Eagles have won 4 straight. Bye the way, which coach could the Cowboys have gotten that would have changed everything that far into the season

Addition by subtraction. No more Garrett game management.

Name Marinelli caretaker HC, give Moore and Richard free hands with running the offense and defense. Then we get clear evaluations of both of them for next year.

Cowboys, 2010.

Seeing the HC get fired focuses the mind.

They went 5-3 after firing Wade, hard to call that a winning streak. The post was about hiring a coach from the outside, Garrett was the OC at the time and was clearly being groomed to take over. No coach on the current staff deserves to step up to the HC position.

It was pretty clear a month ago that Jason Garrett was not going to get a new contract with the Cowboys after another disappointing season. At that time Jerry went public to say that he would not fire Jason during the season. Many speculated that Jerry didnt want hurt Jason's feelings and just wanted to let him ride off into the sunset. Others believed Jerry believed Jason would turn the team around and the Cowboys would still make a playoff run and a chance to resign Garrett. Others (like me) felt that by Jerry firing Jason would mean that not only did Jason failed, but so did Jerry because Jason was Jerry's hand crafted head coach.

In hindsight, I think it all backfired on Jerry because what happened is the players knew Jason's failure to adapt or change meant their nothing was going to change and the season was over. The players quit. And when that happened I think players started turning on players, Fans and media turned on the players. I mean, who really takes a lame duck coach serious when trying to prepare week to week? Needless to say I believe had Jason been fired weeks ago this team would not have collapsed weeks ago.
Surprised?

Game managment hasnt been the problem Game planning, play calling, adjustments and on field mistakes have been. And the interim coach would have just been one of the current coaches that contributed to that

Wouldn't have made a bit of difference.

This is a vastly overrated roster of unlikable players that mostly need to be gone.
But then...look at what Pederson has done with a depleted squad. It seems that a superbowl win changes a team's mentality...as if we didn't already know this. Pederson has won the division with frigging scrubs. The Cowboys make too many excuses. Moreover, they are aided and abetted by the media.

I'm tired of the excuses and your post reminds me a bit of that. The Dallas offense was the top ranked unit in the Football Outsiders index for the first 8 weeks or so and is still ranked 2nd before today's game against Washington. Garrett is simply not extracting the most from these players...for whatever reasons. At the very least, he isn't doing it consistently.

The logic here makes sense. If Garrett is essentially gone for next year - and even worse if he is headed for a rival team, then what good are his efforts for the current team. In fact it would be smart to prepare for next year. At least getting an interim coach who is motivated to try to earn something will push the team. Garrett has nothing but transitioning out to work for. It was bad.

But for the record I think Garrett wants to coach college and I think Jerry has been incubating Bret Bielema in New England for next year.

"deserves"

You belong with Jerry, making football decisions based on your feelings.

Appoint someone to give us the best chance to win for the rest of the season.

Cutting Garrett was a clear addition by subtraction move. Teams appoint caretaker HCs when they fire their HC all the time. We just played a team that did. Marinelli would have been my pick. He's gone next year anyway too.

If we had gone 5-3 in the back half of the season, we'd be in the playoffs.

It's kind of cathartic in a way because I don't have to endure another week of this madness.

And I get my Sundays back too. So much wasted time watching this team this season.

I just wanted Garrett out. Didn't want to waste time watching a playoff game with Garrett as HC.

And I think we have the players to make some noise in the playoffs. But not with Garrett driving the clown car.

It's touching how many people are crying over The Garrett Era coming to a close.

Not me. Time for champagne.
