Both sadly plausible. And both are completely unprepared for a job of that kind of magnitude. Neither is even ready enough to be an OC much less a HC. But Jerry has always had very little respect for the importance of having a strong HC. It’s the cornerstone of what has crippled us for a quarter of a century.
True but our coaching woes aren’t our only obstacle.

It’s a front office and ownership which not only under hire coaching staffs while undermining their ability with country club atmosphere. They mismanage their personnel and drafts.

And wearing both hats of owner and GM over hype and promote their product which usually results in greater fan disappointments and the need to provide scapegoats .

Coaching is only a part of our obstacles .

If it is any legitimate coach, I won't be unhappy about it.

Riley, Meyer, Harbaugh, e.t.c.

I probably won't like the idea of bringing in a coordinator at this point though and I'd probably prefer that we not get a re-tread HC from the NFL who is largely washed up, though you see the success Andy Reid had in KC.

That would be great........Jerry will have to have a talk with his ego first though.

Then Jerrah's ego will ***** slap him into next week, and he'll name himself Emperor For Li....I mean HC for life

In my opinion, there are four types of coaches Jerry Jones will consider to hire as the next HC of the DC. In the end, will he select the right type? I doubt it.

Here are the head coach “types” Jerry could choose from:
  • The young college up and comer- this would be someone like Lincoln Riley or Matt Rhule, although Rhule has a much better resume for the NFL having already been an NFL position coach earlier in his career. There are high risks and possible high rewards. I would point out that unlike Jimmy Johnson, neither Riley nor Rhule has won a national championship or had long term success yet. Of these twoI think Rhule is way better choice. He has won big with far less talent than Lincoln Riley.
  • The established college master- this would be someone like Urban Meyer or Nick Saban (although Saban is not a candidate) This is the “type” most like Jimmy Johnson was. An established winner of national championships, strong program builder, and requires a strong hand in the job or they won’t take it. I like Meyer, and I think he’s an excellent choice but only IF JJ relinquished some power. He won’t, which means Meyer won’t take the job. The people who keep saying Jerry will do this aren’t paying attention IMO.
  • The accomplished veteran NFL HC- this would be someone like Ron Rivera or Mike McCarthy who have some playoff skins on the wall, and some established respect. This type more closely resembles the Bill Parcells hire. This is actually IMO, the second most like scenario because Jerry probably wants someone who won’t require on the job training (like Garrett did) But the balancer is Jerry would only stay with guy a few years- again like Parcells.
  • The Agreeable Puppet- this would either be someone like Jason Garrett- a current NFL assistant with some potential but not strong enough to threaten JJs ego. This would be another Chan Gailey- a lesser known assistant who would not have the clout to demand the appropriate amount of control, or an NFL assistant who has already been a HC and failed like Wade Phillips. This is the type Jerry instinctively wants to hire. We must pray he avoids his instincts.
Of all the “types” I listed, what I’m hoping for is someone who will have these qualities:
1. Strong personality that can command and re-shape this soft country club culture.
2. Experience with a rebuild. Someone who took a program and rebuilt or revitalized it.
3. Creativity- someone who can be adaptive and creative during the game and during the season. Coaches who are winning in the NFL now MUST be creative.

Key questions:
  • Which type of coach does this team need most?
  • Will Jerry go against his crazy, insecure and irrational instincts and select someone who fits the real needs of this team?
  • Or will he select his next Pinocchio?
I like your list. It seems to capture the scope for possible candidate types. Well done!

If I may, I would like to throw in another filter for consideration - that works parallel to yours. Simply put, the Jones family will be faced with another hiring choice, to include: Comfort or credibility.

Jerry has drifted towards the comfort hire more than fans would like over the years (Jason, Wade, Barry, Dave). He's wanted people he likes and enjoys working with on a daily basis. The building is a more pleasant place for him and his players under this regime.

Now, it's tough to know, but I suspect we are readying ourselves for the credibility hire. Maybe not to the extent of what we had in January 2003 with Bill Parcells, because that was a historic shift for the Jones family, but given what they feel this roster has, not to mention Jerry is, what, 77 yo. The clock is ticking on a number of fronts and patience is not on their list of virtues.

Whether this materializes in the form of Meyer, Rhule, Riley, Roman... couldn't say. But I think you've captured the known list of suspects - plus it will be interesting what other names will surface.during this process.

Well said. It is certainly an interesting crossroads for the Jones Cartel. They can choose to seek NFL legitimacy along with their wealth or just choose wealth alone. So far they have just chosen the latter.

Which category does Kellen Moore fit into. Aren't we still assuming he's next in line?

History says Puppet.
I'm a big believer that past history predicts future behavior. And that has "Puppet" written all over it . But who knows what JJ will do.

I'd like to see a head coach and his entire staff have no ties to the Jonesboys organization - no ex-players, nothing.

We need, The accomplished veteran NFL HC-. this team needs to be rebuilt from the ground up and that may require a seasoned NFL coach as most of the experienced coaches and assistants around here need to step off

Edit- If the Steelers dont want Tomlin, Id be happy to get him here. He knows how a team needs to be run
No thanks.

Not sure where a Josh McDaniels would fit in that, but he's the most likely option, imo... third to Bill Cowher (#2) and Sean Payton (#1).

I feel any of the three are going to walk in the door having agreed to the job only after having gained some Bill Parcells-like explicit confirmation that it's understood they will get a significant voice in shopping for the groceries in addition to cooking dinner.

Cowher, though, would be quite a story to watch unfold.

Great point. This would prove Jerry is serious about changing the culture.

In the end, I think all that Jones is worried about is seeing stajum attendance and jersey sales go down if he hires another whipping boy. Winning? He is not thinking about that at all.

I would add that if you’re a “bark at the moon crazy” 77 year old billionaire surrounded by family and yes men, you can actually believe “doing it your way” is synonymous with trying to win. Especially when 100k ticket buyers validate that fable every Sunday.

I still don't know how 24 years later, fans continue to financially enable the man giving them the finger. I do know that an entire generation of would-be Cowboy fans (Dallas area esp) grew up never experiencing any NFC championship appearances and three wild card wins in 24 years. My 18 year thinks the Cowboys are a laughingstock because they have been irrelevant his entire life. We raised him to support local sports and he loves the Stars and the Mavs but he sees that Jerry has no intention of releasing his death grip control over every facet of football matters and here we are a quarter of a century later scratching our heads.

Batting the Hoodie coming to Dallas or Jerry suffering some sort of health issue you can bet it will be a puppet. You guys have not been paying attention. I can’t believe you guys are expecting positive change absent catching lightning in a bottle and getting the Hoodie.

My three sons see the Cowboys exactly the same way. They grew up loving the Cowboys but about ten years ago (in their late teens- early 20s) they saw the Jerry paradigm for what it is- a joke. Two of my sons haven’t watched a Cowboys game in I don’t know how long.

Like your son, my sons love the Mavs, Stars and Rangers- all teams that have each either won a world championship or have at least multiple times been to the finals. Something we haven’t sniffed as Cowboys fans in a qtr. century. Jerry Jones is killing future Cowboys fans by the droves. He’s just lucky his team is in an area where fans of other teams live in large numbers to help fill that shopping mall/discotheque he calls the “stayjum”.

Agreed. Regardless of what Jerry says, it's business as usual year 25.

The job market has always been strong here in DFW and you're right, Jones fills out his stajum every game with a healthy does of opposing fans.
