I think for any coach to survive more than a couple years not "bucking the front office" is a key to continued survival.

And it’s just stupid that this has to be explained to people. In no work or team environment can you have one person “bucking” the other, especially if the one doing the bucking is a subordinate. It as to be a team collaboration in all aspects to be successful.

Revenue has nothing to do with it. The salary cap and salary floor aren't that different, and the Packers aren't leaving lots of room under the cap. The cap is basically a fixed cost to the organization: they can spend it on draftees or free agents or whoever they decide.
When it comes to signing big contracts the outlay of cash up front is relevant
They don’t have the cash for many big long term deals
There revenue is around 250 mil a year
That’s not profit
Managing the cap everyone has to do but managing your cash to pay those huge signing bonuses is much harder on a team like GB than a guy like jerry who’s revenue is nearly a billion a year

Their revenue was $478 million last year. They can do whatever they want in free agency.

Just because he didn’t publicly go after Packer managent doesn’t mean he didn’t fight for something different in private. Attacking your employer publically would be a terrible career decision for anyone.

Green Bay spent huge money on free agency last offseason.

The reason that GB did not take part in free agency (and also never made a player trade) between 2011-2017 is that the former GM Ted Thompson (canned after the 2017 season) thought he was the smartest man in the NFL and wanted to prove that he would rely nearly exclusively on his draft picks and undrafted free agents.

Those claiming McCarthy was handicapped by Thompson's idiocy with regard to roster formation after the 2010 Super Bowl win are 100% correct.

Those ignoring that McCarthy played along like a good, loyal lapdog while his boss Thompson (who was apparently suffering from a medical condition that rendered him virtually incompetent) destroyed the franchise's chances of returning to a second Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers at QB are missing a key reason that McCarthy is such an attractive candidate for Jerry Jones.

I understood you the very first time bro. Sorry you had to RE explain the same thing over and over to a few...
Excellent post and insight.

lol...what makes you think he learned, when the heat is on you revert back to old habits.

Really? So, what you’re saying is that it’s impossible for people to change?

that's a pretty bleak outlook.

Green Bay’s net income was $38.6 million, down 47% from the 2017 mark of $72.8 million

Packers are loaded financially. They have no owner skimming profits and they renovate the stadium every 10 years and spend money on top notch facilities. They literally cannot spend all of the money they make and they have built up a $400 million reserve fund that they’ll probably never spend and will likely just keep growing.

And that’s a pretty cynical take

the guy went through a personal tragedy with his brother dying, got fired from a job suddenly and without seeing it coming, took a year to reassess and dedicated himself to moving forward with a new chapter

I believe in new beginnings. The work the guy did over the last year shows, at a minimum, that he’s dedicated to his work and committed to trying to learn and improve

he could have spent a year playing golf and still got plenty of interviews. Instead he built a team, which I’m sure required a significant financial investment and put in the work to get better.

it’s more than most people would do in a similar situation so I’m inclined to believe he is serious.

people can change. It’s not easy and doesn’t always happen, but for those who want something bad enough, they often find a way

there seems to be a joke going around that this guy is is a donut eating yes man, but that’s honestly just people trying to build a meme out of ignorance and has zero basis in the reality of who this guy actually is. We don’t know. We’re message board fans, recycling bits of news and opinion.

I have guesses, and hunches, like I typed above but I don’t know and neither does anyone else who hasn’t worked with the guy.

I prefer to make positive assumptions. It’s all upside for me. Being jaded and cynical isn’t very satisfying in the end.

it's not a cynical, because the reason behind the video has been question as to whether it's really what his do us was, or if he was just trying to get his name back. everybody have tragic in their life, he's not the only one. I've said all along I'll support him just as I supported the last coach, while some of you made ignorant memes of him. if you were one of those guys , don't act come preaching. I pointed out to the masses here who stood on their heads about what they perceived Garrett issues, Mike has been criticized for those same things. is this next coach going to get that same vitriol and them wanting a new coach or will this franchise become one looking for a new one every couple years , like some of these teams

I would be interested in knowing how/why you think McCarthy was either a "yes man" for the Packers or will be for the Cowboys?

You posted the article Mike. An employee who enables his employer even when that employee knows employer is in wrong is a yes man.

The Packer GM (remember they have NO OWNER) Ted Thompson was literally medically incompetent the last several years of his time in Green Bay (and got let go after 2017).

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ed-thompson-diagnosed-with-autonomic-disorder

Thompson presided over the deterioration of a once great roster by refusing to make any player trades or to sign any free agents (he signed fewer than any other NFL GM between 2011-2017).

The team President (who, unlike in Dallas, did not involve himself in the football as opposed to business side of the operations) was stunned to learn just how dysfunctional the football-side of the organization had become when he finally moved on from Thompson.

https://www.espn.com/blog/nfcnorth/...ackers-issues-wants-to-knock-down-those-silos

And guess who played good soldier and never uttered a negative word about his truly incompetent boss Ted Thompson? Michael John McCarthy.

And Cowboy fans wonder why Jerry hired this guy?

Known Ted for years... he's a good guy...

Burning things down to the ground doesn’t make you a passionate critic of the status quo

not calling your boss an idiot in public doesn’t make one a yea man

Hope you’re self employed :)

Correction can be done with tact. Extremes are not the only actions.
