Just a few DC jobs open up every year and there are boatloads of candidates, some whom have direct ties to the HC that makes the decision. Not getting one of those rare jobs doesn’t mean someone is washed up, it just means there is way more supply than demand.

If he was a great candidate, he wouldn't be teaching linebackers for 5 years.

He's probably not the elite of the elite, but the small few of those aren't available. We can't just pretend we had the pick of everyone on the planet. Nolan may well be among the best of what was available though.

That's fair. I guess the one positive is that he was picked by the head coach, not Jerry.

Hoping for the best, but i have a bad feeling we'll be missing Marinalli by November. Those Atlanta defenses were soft as tissue paper.

I’d rather have Rob Ryan’s assignment screwups over Marinelli. If you’re going to go down, go down blitzing rather than get paper cut to death

I'm still on the fence about Nolan being DC. I think he might be an upgrade, but not sure he's the best candidate. I personally would have preferred Marvin Lewis. He was bad as HC but his defenses were usually pretty good. But will hope for the best.

Look back at both the first philly game and the rams game this year. I believe combined we were plus 4-5 on the turnover battle.

when you have a very good offense you can afford to take more chances on d. If it doesn’t work out? Your offense can bail you out.... if it does you can blow teams out.

I had a huge problem this year because against inferior teams with bad olines we sat back and played scared.... made everything easy on them. We legit played not to lose.

The piece of the puzzle you guys are missing is:

When you are aggressive and go for takeaways, if you miss the takeaway, it often results in a big play in yards and/or a TD.
The second problem is you get the takeaway. But your offense sucks and goes three and out.

You are right back on defense.

Smart teams are more willing to be aggressive when they are in front when they have momentum.
Going for the turnover when you're behind might seem like a good idea, but if you miss.....you dug a deeper hole.

Now, you're down by ten inside 2:00 to play, the offense have the ball on your side of the 50, do you play aggressive even if means you lose by 13 or 17, or play tight to prevent another score?

Its hard to evaluate every single play that produced the stats on that page.

The 2009 Broncos have been mentioned. The Denver defense finished 12 overall, 3rd in passing, and 26 in rushing. The offense was 20th overall, 13 in passing and 18th in rushing.

So the first 6 games Denver held opponents to 66 points while scoring 133. Their next four games the offense scored 37 while defense gave up 117.
It appears from those stats when the offense was scoring points, the defense was able to do its job. But when the offense went dry, the defense started having problems.

I hope he’s a good hire. I’m confident our offense will be top 3 again next season, defense though I’m still very concerned about.

Already excited about the draft and the new overall direction this team is going. Cant wait for September.

his defenses give up too many yards and points.

we need someone who has a winning history.

Coach Mike is hiring his buddy that gave him a job.

Yea, stats are just stats without context.

Were the teams void of talent? Was it an injury plagued year? Was there turmoil elsewhere that tanked the team?

Curious to see how some of the positional defensive spots get filled.

Thanks, as I was going to post, what were the teams like, bad team, injured, poor HC. etc.
Not defending him, but I am just happy we have someone new with a fresh look on things.

Maybe he can turn the talking heads into the real hot Boyz.

Yes, and maybe he'll be able to consistently make in-game adjustments, something we haven't seen since Parcells.
